So we've got five hours of downtime on halloween: People aren't too impressed that parties could be effected by this, sales, yadda yadda yadda. I'll be at work myself during those hours so it doesn't directly effect me, although indirectly it might if things are borked when it all comes back up. However, do you think planned downtime on Halloween is a good idea or would you prefer they move it forward or back a day?

I will probably be in CoH during that time or working on a texture, either way. Then later that day, I need go to take the kiddo candy-begging. So, Halloween is shot Sadly, I can see them doing this on Christmas, if it wasn't for the fact that they are closed then.

Isn't Wednesday always the day for scheduled downtime?

From: Jezebella Desmoulins Isn't Wednesday always the day for scheduled downtime? Unless CBS is doing a promotional event on wednesday . Yesterday would have made perfect sense: downtime and then when the usual after-downtime mess hit they'd announce: "SL is still recovering from the CSI:NY virus. We apologize for the inconvenience while we work to restore normal service" .

It's like the Christmas for SL and they choose it for downtime lol. Bad move. I'm betting someone wakes up and realizes their piss poor judgement and forethought :/

Any chance someone at concierge level could have a polite talk with a Linden or two?
Preferabbly at the end of a baseball bat?

I'll be busy doing Halloween in RL, but the timing on this is a stone drag for those who wish to do an SL Halloween.....moving it forward or back a day or two would do no harm. If I can, I'll be hopping onto the grid for a bit that night just to see some of the costumes and garner some ideas for next year...

They aren't thinking. At all.
Surely they will change this.

Hmmm, sometimes I feel like I'm being forced to play SL too. On those days, I try to log off as soon as possible.

In addition, some people choose to have their holiday fun on SL. It makes about as much sense as closing movie theaters on Halloween, or shutting down the mall. It's only for part of the day, but still - a bad choice of days. Rather astoundingly bad. coco

From: Raymond Figtree You don't have a choice? Hmmm, sometimes I feel like I'm being forced to play SL too. On those days, I try to log off as soon as possible. I live in Italy... halloween parties here are just "poor" (not so special events.. they are just "USA wannabe night parties), then *for me* passing halloween here on SL is much more fun [end of personal reasons] / [starting commercial ones] Our sim is user-oriented (for "fun" but it is run by a RL Company that uses SL for it's exclusive business. It means that we are investing real money (lucrative indeed) to attract people. We owns tenth of "commercial sims" (some of them are big brands), then even if i enjoy fun on SL.. this is NOT (not completely) a joke for us. I'm not crying because i cant wear my vampire costume (even if you would have my reason to do... if i wish) but because Linden Labs doesn't figure that were investing big money into this and we *PRETEND* a serious business conduct from them (again: it's not a joke). Yesterday was a unplanned downtime with 1 day notice, it was the same a month ago, today is halloween, tomorrow will be another thing... many of their decisions doesn't come from a stopworker (if they are forced to shutdown for an unpredictable event.. well it may happen!), but for a lack of brain in BUSINESS decisions. "Sorry for the short notice, and thank you for your patience".. this is the comment i read everytime, do you think i may repeat that phrase to my customers? I will receive immediatly this reply: "Yes, thanks for your time, i will invest my money elsewhere". What's the result of this? We will be forced to abandon that SL business... i have another RL job then it's not a problem for me, but for others it may be (starting from Lindes.. if none will invest into this "kids-government" affair... hem pardon: VIDEOGAME).

I feel for you, as well as anyone who tries to make a business work in this game. Everything from high tier to poor performance makes it extremely hard on anyone who tries.

Is it possible to be astounded but not surprised at the same time? Halloween is one of the most important days on my show's schedule next to the Christmas special. I was looking forward to next Wednesday being the first "holiday special" for BitM in-world. The downtime begins right when my show goes to air. Sure I spent a lot of L's getting ready for it but I spend a lot of L's anyway. This is just another in a way too long list of disappointments from LL. I wonder how many more it will take before I finally wake up and walk away. I hope they consider moving this downtime. I sincerely doubt it though.

I am of the opinion that this is one step too far. They don't care about the average user, I'm convinced of that after the few months I have been here. What they are doing now, though, is messing with their bread and butter, people who buy islands and sims and expect to be able to hold events on one of the most celebrated holidays online.
Sure, as someone who plays during the day and spends time with family in the evening, I'm used to being screwed on downtime. Sure, between, say 1am-4am SLT most of SL is deserted, but it is MUCH better to wait and take the servers down when US users are finished with breakfast and want to log in. That's just the way LL works.
People who own sims that will be effected by this need to make themselves heard. If they want to leave us graphically in 2003 and waste their resources on something piddly like voice, hey, people will tolerate it, they can at least still play circa 2003. When you've devoted time and resources into parties and events for European users only to find that the servers will be down, that goes beyond the pale.
There is something tragically flawed about the way LL makes these decisions. Their entire focus seems to be in sabotaging their own success. It's a shame a really nice pastime will be lost for so many people when it's finally over.
