Don't recant to me. I know your sort. I seen your train a'coming a long way off.

You didn't answer my question.

By the way Jig, in the US, the new definition of a racist is "Anyone winning an argument with a liberal"

Chris, where is the OP "wallowing"?????? Is a single sentence commenting that there is a correlation between the treatment he received in SL, and that accorded him in SL, "wallowing"? Do you really think that there IS no racism against blacks in RL?

On the other hand, I disagree with Jig: I think you DO have a right to make this accusation, even if it is dead wrong.

ETA: I'm still being affectionate! :)

Scylla, I know you are. :) I consider you a friend and a good person, even when we do disagree.

I only confront people who wallow in their victimhood. I could care less what color they are. Tell me Jig, in the last week in the US, a white boy was beat by a mob of black kids on a school bus. Also a black woman was assaulted by a white male. Which one is a hate crime? Are both? Neither?

Are you sure about confronting only the "victim" or are you equally angered when I drive a fancy car and wear great clothes and have all the things you think I don't deserve coz I don't have a "redneck"? You ever been stopped by a cop time and again coz you're in the "wrong neighbourhood"? You know why I live as far away from people as I can get? It's so I can breathe fresh air, away from the crap that I have to put up with from societies that refuse to accept a coloured, intelligent, irreverent, and political woman who won't say "yes massa, no massa, three bags full massa" to anyone, black or white.

It's possible the other people were roleplaying - the OP did say it is a sim with, basically, racism built in.

Not knowing more about the sim or hearing from any of the other people I can't really make a fair judgment.

However I will also not judge the experience of the OP since I have not walked in her skin, either RL or SL.

(It's kind of like when -some- men assume they can fully understand being female, because they put on a female avatar. Or - well - anyone who assumes they can fully understand anyone else's experiences, really. I'm not that silly.)

It seemed to me that the OP was expressing amusement, not wallowing in anything.

I wonder how they'd treat an African Hunting Dog. :D

As long as you work to earn the money to buy what you have, I don't care what you own. As for the rest, I don't bow before any man so we are alot alike in that.

I have been threatened with arrest for being mouthy. I have been told that "People like you shouldn't have rights." Just because I didn't bow and scrape before a badge.

I considered the whole post to be wallowing. If he wants a skin to show a certain race he cannot find, then he should make one or pay someone else to make one. Not put the blame on white people.

Well i am one of the rare chineses in SL and am proud to admit it to all ppl that i meet first time, and maybe i was lucky or maybe it's the majority here, but most ppl seemed to be quite friendly and didn't react any differently to before they knew my race.

Though i'd like more choices of chinese looking avatars, that would be cool.

I was happy to find a skin that better reflects my culture, made by the only designer in SL who creates this type.

I am curious which this is, so I can send people there if asked about a multi cultural type of skin store.

LOL. Don't WHAT?????? :p

Jig, Chris, from an early time in my experiences on this forum, when I didn't "get it," and people didn't "get" me, and I was being flamed left, right, and centre, was one of the relatively few who took the time and made the effort to ensure that I understood that his opposition to my views was not personal; he went so far, in fact, to invite me to the Hangout.

I am only being half-serious when I say "I am still being affectionate," but at the same time, I do respect Chris (and others I disagree with here), and it is worth the effort and the goofiness to ensure that they know that. This debate can easily become a poisonous as any we've had on this forum; I don't want that to happen.

So I've been having some interesting experiences with this skin in the way that people now react to me. One of the most amusing happened yesterday. I went to a historical sim where you are required to look the part or risk being ejected. I was appropriately dressed. The problem is that in RL history in the place this sim seeks to recreate, Black people would not have been welcomed. So when I entered a diner where everyone was previously chatting and enjoying themselves, all fell silent. I was there for about five minutes looking around before leaving, and not a word was spoken

Reminds me of RL. lol

Yep...

I get that in RL too.

As well as the usual "You speak English? E...n...g...l...i...s...h?" and "you an illegal or what?"

Well, yes, I do speak English, and half my ancestors -walked- here, did yours? But no, I don't speak Spanish? But if you're looking for an illegal, try those blonds over there that are chattering away in Ukrainian...

Oh, I do offer a 'mocha / chocolate' dollarbe skin in my shop. Made for the exact reasons you mention - but as a dollarbe for newbies to have something.

I need to make a dollarbe 'red / tan / brown' skin now too. :)

No Chris, it's not "Your Loss" - it's "OUR loss".

We'll never communicate at any level - you despise anyone who doesnt fit your glove of social rules and regulations and expectations. I can't come to any discussion or debate with you without feeling angered and upset in real.

We both lose coz maybe you might have some shred of decency in you. But you would patronize me just as I would patronize you. We both lose out.

I went there before as a newbie in a white skin and it didn't happen.

What do you mean by professional race victim?

People who are not white who complain that they get treated wrong are racists or 'professional victims' creating situations to complain about.
People who are white who complain that they get treated wrong are victims of reverse discrimination.

- the new paradigm now. Its all flipped back to the old days using those tools, thanks to Conservatives being in power just a little too long...

Interestingly, when I first came to SL in May 2007, I was told by many people, including total strangers!, that I was "too white." By that I mean they didn't like the paler skin I wear.

In RL my skin *is* naturally fair. I also have red hair and blue eyes. I'm the type that enjoys having my avatar reflect my RL looks as does the OP if I'm understanding the post correctly. And I really had to hunt to find a skin I liked that wasn't too yellow or pink or wasn't "Goth white." At that time, the majority of avatars I saw, imo, looked like they had spent way too much time in a tanning booth. Now I'm starting to see a broader spectrum of skin tones as well as skins that better reflect a more *ahem* mature woman.

But I was really getting tired of especially the strangers who said, "Why is your skin so pale?" I guess there's no pleasing some people. The point was *I* liked it. End of story.

From: Brann Georgia
There are countless times when you walk into a new place, RL and SL, where you, as the newcomer, are ignored. Not every place is welcoming. To say that it's because of your avatar is guesswork, at best.

That happens to me often. :o

Maybe I should work on the affectionate angle; I think my redheaded fiery temper precedes me.

I'm off for fresh air. I cannot respect a man who posts with the sobriquet "Loud Arrogant Redneck" - it's a red flag to anyone who knows what engenders racism. This person may have been decent to you, but in all the time I have been here, I have never felt anything but this person's dislike of anyone with views who dont coincide with the ones expressed.

Racism is NOT a game. It's not a roleplay. There's no advantage to espousing opposite views to gain effect. It's vile by any standards.

I still think you are hugely overreacting. I am not going to try to convince you that there aren't people who don't "wallow" or use race as an "excuse," but (like Argent), I don't see any of that in the OP. The post is coolly detached and mildly ironic, NOT carping, wallowing, or complaining.

To accuse ANYONE who brings up the issue of race as someone playing "the race card" badly undercuts the credibility of that accusation when it is used where it is actually applicable. Just as complaining about racism where it isn't really in effect undercuts legitimate complaints about real racism (which is what you are implicitly arguing).
