The idea of a perfect fit to animations is a nice one. Most misalignment problems would be eliminated, and that's not a bad thing by any means. However, a persons shape is something far too personal and identifying to just *change* it for those benefits. One of the biggest struggles here in SL is to NOT look like other people, and the root of that individuality starts with the shape. I had a person offer me 8k for my shape and homemade skin, to which I had to politely laugh. I wouldn't accept 3 times that much for them. There's nothing that special about them, I mean there's plenty of better shapes and skins around, but these are mine... The end result of months of hard work and endless tweaking, and I take pride that out of everyone else on the grid, I am the only one who has them. I wouldn't and probably couldn't just change shape so that animations fit better.. too high a price IMO.

I wondered too. It sounded like the person is designing a game or something.

But I figured if they wanted to tell us they would've so I didn't bother asking. But, yeah.

I just decided to pad my post count by starting a thread. That's all. :)

Would I?

LOL.....I change constantly in SL!!! Always female....but I am always making new shapes for photo ideas or to recreate characters (recently did Jessica from True Blood) That is half the fun for me....having the creative freedom to experiment and play with my avatar......re-invent her on a whim.

It doesn't change who I am.....it doesn't change anything about my experience in SL....it enhances it.....for me it's all about the creative process. So.....actually, my answer is no....I would NOT conform just so animations and furniture worked perfectly with my avatar.....way too boring for me. I am not a conformist by nature....and certainly that applies in SL. ;)

I have gotten offers as well for my shape and skin, which every time leave me feeling stunned. As IF i would want someone else to look like me??!!! Uh, no. I find the question somewhat upsetting actually. It's like, go do your own homework ffs.

Not for the animations reason. I do have 12 or so saved shapes for different projects I do though.

My first ever SL forums post as Phoenix.....

Became really good friends with Sydney Jacobs, the first to answer that post.

I packaged my AV as joke for Halloween one time. Somebody actually bought one, so there might be a little Smith running around out there somewhere XD

It would make for a rather boring sl if everyone looked the same.

Pretty much, yeah. Although it's flattering to get such an offer, selling it would kind of defeat the purpose of being unique. Maybe I should just "rent out" my body for short periods of time ;)

I'm constantly tweaking my avatar. It's not so much that I keep changing my mind as I'm getting better at getting the results I want from the sliders. At first I didn't even know about the camera tool under View that allows you to rotate around the av while editing appearance. I've always bought my skins but never my shape. I keep updating the pic file below to keep track.

I've become so attached to my av to the point that I would feel bad having an alt. Just having an avatar has been an amazing experience in self exploration for me. And yes, of course I am a red-headed elf in real life! :D

You bet, it's the only thing I never change :)

Anyone else have pics of themselves from when they first joined and now? Were the sliders always as good as they are now?

I did for a little while, because I saw someone in the same av, and I did not want to be their twin. I'll skip why.

I got a fair amount of 'aww' and complaints, and finally decided, why let someone else influence me that way. And also, the other one just wasn't that hot. I'm "me" again ever since.

Ha.

I never understood the post count thing. I find mine a bit embarrassing actually. High post count = too much time in here.

I cut back when they started doing the Usenet posting statistics... and I had the high post count for the entire Internet.

Would you change your shape and size if all animations were made for it? If all furniture and vehicles, and houses, and clothes, shoes, hair, were made for it? If you could hold hands or kiss lips? Would it be worth it to be all the same shape? One shape for females and one for males?

That describes There.com to a T. It's one way to do things and it works well, however I wouldn't do it by choice. The richness of the variety of forms we have in SL is far more valuable than any benefit to be gained by conforming to a single body type.

We are able to ignore intersections and general size/shape related weirdness to an extent and have expectations that are specific to the norms of SL. Some things are just typical SL (gigantic avatars, say); I enjoy the fact that it's got its own culture.
