Hi everyone A little while back, I wrote an open-source animation overrider that's become somewhat popular. I recently received a complaint because it uses the word "sexy" in the documentation, and someone found it offensive. The context of its use is as follows: "Example: If you have a custom animation for walking called “Sexy-Walk #1″ you have to type exactly that on the line under the “-=Walking=-” posture state keyword. -=Walking=- Sexy-Walk #1 =Running=- -=Crouchwalk=- [...]" I'm trying to determine if many people find this word offensive, but were too polite to complain about it, or is this really just the voice of just a very small minority of people. My personal feeling is that it is a perfectly appropriate word in this context - it describes someone's gait in strong, fluid, and exaggerated physical tones, but does not invoke any carnal implication. As such, I'm not particularly inclined to change it. However, if it turns out that I've been inadvertently offending people for years, perhaps I should consider revising the documentation. What do you think?

meh it is just a word, widely used in many contexts, and the context is what counts
in this case, the word could have been any word and it would not have offended me...
*shrug*
the complaint should be aimed at those who name their walk "sexy_Walk"
hehe

Not broadly offensive no. I hear it 24 hours a day on television -- or at least I WOULD if I watched TV. People offended by this word would do well to stay in their village and not access the wider world.

From: Francis Chung [...]an open-source animation overrider that's become somewhat popular. [...] Charming understatement, that. The script is a must-read for anybody learning about AOs, and a true SL classic. To the topic: I very much doubt that the complainer was both serious and sane.

Definitely not broadly offensive. It's used quite often in advertising, TV, books, internet, regular conversations, and any numerous points wherein something is considered "hot."

Crossquote because it matches! Unless they're setting him up for an AR of some sort. Just remember what happened to Carl M and his artistic nipples..

The only time the word sexy bothers me in SL is when women use it as part of their name, or description in a titler. Whether or not they are sexy is not their call, that's for someone else to decide I may be a dissenting voice here but what is usually considered a sexy walk in SL, I find convulsively hilarious. If any woman I knew in RL walked like that I'd take her to the vet to be put down - it's clear there's major spinal cord damage. It's so fake and exaggerated as to be laughable.

I agree with everything in this post. Of course, I did use the walk in question for some time, but I used it on a somewhat exaggerated non-human avatar so the effect wasn't *quite* as bad...But I haven't used it in a very long time. On topic, I have a reputation as a very G-rated individual, and have even been called a prude...and the word "sexy" does not bother me.

Yeah what everybody else said, in the strongest possible terms. I consider it a symptom of diseased minds and possible a diseased society that such questions even need to be considered.

From: Francis Chung What do you think? It's hardly pervy. It's a script. Proof that some people will go to great lengths to gripe, merely to fill their day. (NB: There was a thread on this forum a while back in which people complained about the very existence of the 'sexy walk' - and some had a lot of harsh words for any woman who used that walk in Second Life. I mean...it's an animation of a walk. That isn't duck footed. People are scary.) ETA: they're baaaack....

From the Second Life Knowledge Base article on the new maturity ratings:
"For instance, stores that sell a range of content that includes some "sexy" clothing or objects can generally reside in Mature rather than Adult Regions. "
Now if LL finds it acceptable to use the word "sexy" in their public KB, I don't see how anyone can complain that it is broadly offensive.

There's a few other words I can think of ...
Seriously people, what century are some of the SL users living in?
Reminds me of that "Punch" cartoon: Two editors across desk from demure Jane Austen: "We love the book, Miss Austen, but all this effing and blinding will have to go."

If any woman I knew in RL walked like that I'd take her to the vet to be put down - it's clear there's major spinal cord damage. It's so fake and exaggerated as to be laughable. To be fair, everything in SL is very exaggerated and a bit cartoonish. If an animation would be realistic to real life standards, it would seem very plain here. If you go around and measure, I'm sure you'd find that the average male in SL is 7 feet tall, and the average female has D cups. It's just a funny symptom of an environment that is compelling and interactive, but not yet powerful enough to convey a realistic experience. This documentation was written waaaay back when, maybe in 2004. For everyone who joined SL since then, I have to tell you, it was a lot different back then. We didn't used to have custom animations, and we were stuck for years with just default animations. When animations were first introduced, it was a brand-new toy, and not many people figured it out. It's wasn't like now where there's enough resources for anyone to make an animation. It was particularly challenging to develop a good walk cycle animation, but in those days, *anything* that wasn't default was a refreshing change from everyone walking around with the same silly gait. There wasn't much choice, so you took what you got, and that old "sexy-walk" animation became quite popular for a time .. But back on topic! Thanks everyone who wrote back, and keep them coming!

Certainly the objector is a very small minority - possibly a minority of one. After all, anyone who is actually that disturbed over the idea of sex is bound to drop out of the gene pool. Sp, unless it is someone trying to set you up for an AR, as someone suggested, consider it a freakish, nonreproducing genetic fluke. An extremely rare one, or there wouldn't be 6.5 billion people in the world.

Some of us have a sinuous walk in real life, too. If anyone thinks the 'sexywalk' isn't possible, rent a Marilyn Monroe film...
