Maybe I can get Conan to weigh in on how the rum induced sugar overloads of the Royal Navy were the catalyst for the Imperial Colonialism of the British Empire......... :p

Well, it's true that the British sweet tooth in the early 1600s did cause a rapid growth in markets for sugar and coco. Mostly though it was more a taste for money. Mmmmmm...lovely money

/me drifts off into a money trance.

Oh, and the Royal Navy as an insititution didn't exist until the 1720s, by which time British sugar producing colonies were well established. Prior to this date, the Crown relied mostly on renting merchant ships to supplement it's small fleet.

Why is this thread still alive?

You sure they weren't the catalyst for the DOWNFALL of Imperial Colonialism in the 19th and 20th centuries? *smirk*

I prefer chocolate ice cream myself.

IT'S CHOCOLATE!!!!!

Sugar is just to sweeten the chocolate a bit.

No, that came later. Keep in mind that British Empire was at it's peak in the 1930s, not the 19th century as some people seem to think. It's decline was caused by the massive extortionate interest payments levied on the loan by the USA to Britain in 1946 to pay for the reconstruction of our infrastructure brought about by us bearing the brunt of defeating Hitler, while the USA got off without any real long-term economic damage whatsoever (despite Nazi Germany being just as much a threat to them as to us). Ironic that Germany and Japan, the losers, got free aid to rebuild while us, their allies, had a high interest loan instead. Essentially we traded our empire in to beat Hitler.

And this is the thanks we get. :D

I think probably Gandhi had a lot to do with your losing India...that and your propensity for sitting around drinking gin and tonics and ordering your lackeys around... :p

talking of savoury stuff. Why is it that when i'm on holiday in the U.S. and had a night out with too much to drink, can i not find an Indian restaurant to satisfy my craving for a curry?

Are there not many Indians in America? or do Americans not like curry?

We cannot talk about guacamole. BUT we can talk about corn chips, because salt, grease and chocolate are the 3 staples of Life As We Know It. And clearly there is a lack of one or all of them in SL, because our world continues at least partially borked :(

Conan, maybe you should re-create the British empire in SL! I'm sure all of we Americans would be happy to come and be revolting ... er... revolt ... again!

Methinks the Depression had a bit to do with it as well - along with the spreading realization after WWII that colonies were no longer an economic advantage, but rather a handicap in direct proportion to how many guns the wogs were able to get their hands on. And then there were the onerous terms Britain and France (among others) imposed on Germany after WWI, which indirectly led to the economic and moral collapse of Germany and the resultant rise of Hitler in the first place...

It's all really very unfortunate. When the Brits and the French lost control of the cacao-producing areas like Ghana, it was all over - the balance of world power tipped irrevocably against the West. Mideast oil is just a detail...

Your leaving out the lion's share of brunt bearing -

Done by the Soviet Union.

They lost 10 times as many soldiers as the US and the UK combined.

Maybe they just want to keep it to themselves, along with owning casinos (sorry couldn't help that one it just slipped out).

Very true, Sugar withdrawl does often lead to Depression.
