What I really would like to know is how well that system works with downloading all the textures.

Could you clarify that Bree, and I would be happy to a test for you.

Could you try teleporting around to different places. Maybe to some clothing stores and see if the stores rez and show their images faster than what you normally have seen in the past.

I don't want to speak for Rock, but I think you're confusing the issue, Bree. How fast textures (and other items) rez depends more on your Internet connection than anything else. The faster they can be delivered to you, the sooner you see them. While the speed of everything, including the time it takes to go from having received the data to drawing it on screen, will benefit on a more powerful machine, the significant bottleneck is the Internet, not anything inside the computer.

On my current desktop (which is more powerful than any laptop on Earth, including Rock's), downloads don't appear to go any faster than on my 5 year old Dell. All other aspects of performance are obviously much better on the newer machine, but downloads themselves aren't noticeably any different.

When you teleport to a brand new location, it's going to take time to download all the textures and objects, no matter what. You could be running SL on HAL9000, and that wouldn't change.

cept HAL wouldn't let you go to some unknown sim with weird unknown textures, Dave.

Well, he'd probably let you go. He just might not let you come back afterwards. Remember to bring your helmet, and you'll be fine.

Things rez a little faster, but remember when you have boosted your settings to Ultra Graphics, from where setting may have had to be, on a older system, so it tends to balance itself out. There is a noticably faster rezzing, but this is mostly dependent on your Internet Connection and so you still have to let things rez.

Thanks for the answers! Makes sense. Rock probably went to test it and is having too much fun to stop and post here again.

Right. Exactly my point. The sim can only do 45 FPS. If you are seeing 100 FPS in your client, 55 of them are copies and your screen would have looked the same if they were there or not.

Animation is done client-side (both avatar animation and texture animation), so a higher frame rate could give you a slightly smoother effect. If you're using a flat panel display, however, your refresh rate is probably 60Hz, so any frame rate faster than that will be wasted. It would even be a neat feature for the viewer to NOT exceed your monitor refresh rate, instead idling the CPU if it could exceed that rate; it would cut the power consumption and thermal load of your computer a bit, and give users of the rare laptops that would have the problem a bit of extra battery life.

Keep in mind that the actual viewed fps is also monitor related. The refresh rate is a cap. Even though my fps often reaches into the high 200's in warcraft, or 100 in SL, my flat panel monitor has a refresh rate of 60, the usual number for a Flat panel.

Hmmmm... can't see how that would affect it?

I dont bother with low-end graphics stuff like Warcraft. That'll run on any junkie system.

Gimme Crysis or Battlefield 2 or Unreal 3 or Half-Life 2, online with about 32 other people and vehicles. Mostly Custom Mods.

I keep my monitor at default 60 mHz and still pull in 30-80+ FPS with those games. Crysis reeeeally pushes it tho.

Bingo! Yes!

Which is why I still dont like LCD's. Nice as they are, I like being able to change resolution & refresh rates to whatever I want.

For instance: Change your LCD to 640x480 @ 100 Hz. Look good or not? Thats the only catch of LCD.

I did, and did!!

I went to several large prim, many textured stores, with lots of avis there, such as Gurl6, Naughty Island, etc.

The FPS at High graphics setting was usually between 65 and 85, and at Ultra between 55 and 78

Again, for those asking about the specs, go to www.rockdirect.com

I believe he got a laptop, if you don't really need a laptop, then for half of the price you would buy a desktop that would top his performance (or of any other laptop around.. like those hi-end XPS).

Keerect!

A little comparison. Earlier in the thread, someone says that the Rock laptop costs about $4400. I just bought a high-midrange desktop for $1700 (including OS) from a local system integrator. The specs are:

motherboard: ASUS M2N-SLI AM2 nForce 550
Power: 550 W
CPU: AMD Athlon x264 (dual-core), 2.8GHz
RAM: 4G DDR2-800
Disc: 250 GB SATA
Graphics: EVGA (Nvidia) 8800GT 512MB
OS: XP Pro 32-bit

Today (the grid still in so-so shape, 50K+online), with 1.19.1.4, most graphics sliders set to 3/4, high for avatars, all water reflections on and draw distance 128m, I'm getting 50-60 fps on average. I have seen it go to 100; it rarely dips below 25. Yes, that's 50-60fps at Starboards even, with gorgeous glittery water, tons of reflections, and a couple of people racing.

This is with a not-very-impressive DSL line, speed in preferences set to 400Mb/sec (for some reason, there was packet loss today at higher rates; perhaps all the concurrent downloads of new client?).

Yes, that result is in-line, with a Q9650 (the most powerfull cpu available.. that doesn't make any difference respect my other 3.4ghz OC dual core, but it's for price comparison) and a XFX8800 Ultra XXX (the most powerful *single die* gpu available atm), im able to run this on a 60fps average (loaded sim) with eveything maximized (ultra on custom with AF). This is NOT the cheapeast configuration you can get (and i do not use it just for SL) but it's to make more evident that with this config you still spending half the price.
I would blame at these guys (it's not the case! im just generic) that often buy a laptop just because it's cooler to watch on a desk. :P

It's true that you can't change the resolution of an LCD arbitrarily. They are fixed pixel displays, so they really only look good at one resolution. On the other hand, when you DO run them at their optimum resolution, they look better in many ways than any CRT ever will; perfect focus, perfect geometry, and zero flicker. On the other hand, LCDs often have trouble with black level in dark areas and with color gamut; can't win them all. (Videophiles argue over which looks better, and in some ways it comes down to which image flaws bother you more. Some audiophiles believe that vinyl sounds better than CD; again, it's a matter of which imperfections bother you most.) Older LCDs also had smearing in quickly-changing images, but that is mostly fixed now.

The refresh rate thing is a bit of a different story. High refresh rates are important on CRTs because they flicker; too low a rate for your brain and eyes, and you see the flicker and get headaches.

TFT LCD displays don't flicker; the pixels are always on. You don't need a high refresh rate for that reason, though a higher rate might be nice for smoother motion effects. 120Hz LCD televisions have recently appeared, complete with special video processing to attempt to smooth motion in existing video sources. I haven't yet seen a 120Hz computer monitor, but the tech exists now to build the panel. Getting the data to the panel is another issue; the standard DVI interface might not be up to the job, at least not at the high resolutions that people who would be buying these new premium panels would want.

Maybe someone can relate my experience to all of this.

I've just logged in with my main, he gets a value in the region 12 -21 fps.

I then logged in with an alt, in exactly the same location using the same computer and he gets 25-35 fps.

Can somebody tell me how I can get the better performance transferred to the main? As far as I can tell the settings are the same.

Try to clean your cache. It could improved your framerate.

I would also make it a level playing field for comparison purposes, in terms of attachments etc, and strip them both completely and remove all attachments, then do your FPS test.
