Hi guys,

as promised, here are the results of using SL on The Fastest Laptop on the Planet....100FPS!!!

I am not sure how much of that is due to the new viewer, but just let me say, the view is AMAZING from where I'm stood.

If there is any particular stats or info that anyone would like, just shout. I posted the full specs of this awesome laptop in the earlier Laptop thread.

Regards to all

I loaded the new viewer last night.
If I don't set the graphic settings too high I get just above the 10FPS mark.

I was excited about that, now I'm just jealous.

Seriously amazing -- where were you at the time? Location is important, 'cuz if you were, say, in an openspace sim with no builds about at 500m in the air, faving the void ocean, you'll get a higher FPS than, say, standing in a box mall in the middle of old mainland

FWIW, I've gotten my iMac up to about 70 fps, while usually in the 30-40 fps range. Always blows my mind when I get to that, given I established my account during a time when I was lucky to have 4 fps, and typically had 2 fps to my name.

Congrats, Rock. Glad to hear you're enjoying your new machine. :) Sounds like it's a monster.

Here's what I'd be curious to know:

Location?
Draw distance?
Graphics preferences options?
Anisotropic filtering turned on?
Anti-aliasing?
What viewer?

Moxz, I'm not inworld world and working from memory. Try the VIEW pull down menu, and look for STATISTICS BAR. It will display a lot of info, FPS included.

at NCI Kuula when it is busy, 30 avs or more, I seldom go below 40-50 FPS with a 128 draw distance.

Yup, I do hit 100 at times hehe (ctrl-shift-1) for stats

We should set up a "standard" test for the purposes of comparison.

So a particular place (a complex build but not many avatars visiting), facing and looking in a particular direction, waiting for textures to load, and standard graphics settings (say Ultra). I guess a particular client, though that's a variable we don't get to control over time.

At that point saying you achieve a particular FPS would be somewhat more meaningful. If we shared our configurations and results, it would also allow other residents to make better decisions when spec'ing out their own new systems or upgrades.

I would suggest *two* locations, to give a high and low.

1. One of the "sample" islands around Linden Estate Services, facing water, at 150m up.

2. The Ahern Welcome Area, facing the center (the border of the four sims), at ground level.

I would also propose it with low graphic setting and high graphic setting: both give such a swide variety of options, most notably with windlight enabled and disabled, as well as different distances for avatar imposters.

Problem with Ahern is all the avatars. Of varying complexity. It makes reproducing similar conditions near impossible.

Then can I propse a concurrent test - anyone interested in framerate testing should descend on Ahern at the same time to...

uh...

On second thoughts, that's a damn fool idea...

Definately interesting - I am looking into new laptop and trying to balance price verses function. Currently looking at Dell XPS (accident protection) and Alienware Area-51.

Just because it says 100fps - how different is it really? is it THAT much faster?

You have a point there. But without a avatars, does it really tell how it really is, fps-wise?

I'd suggest a traffic bot pit, but why give them out traffic during a test, ya know?

There used to be an island that was setup for rendering tests back when they changed the rendering before Windlight and it was still left around after, I just searched for it but can't remember what it was called...

Anyone remember? It had a point to stand at an exact distance facing prims designed to test the speed of different things...

Considering that sims max out at 45 FPS, isn't paying for a system that could do more than that just money wasted? (with respect to SL anyway, I know there's other applications that would actually use the extra capabilities)

Hey!

That 45 FPS you're seeing is 'Sim FPS' and not client side FPS. They're totally different. Your client side FPS is in a different section of the statistics panel. and I don't think the client side FPS is capped at all.

Right. Exactly my point. The sim can only do 45 FPS. If you are seeing 100 FPS in your client, 55 of them are copies and your screen would have looked the same if they were there or not.
