From: 3Ring Binder i was aware of all these things well before we met. it was 9 years until that, remember? my view was colored long before... i'm not sure why you assume i am so naive. but thank you for your interpretation of my reality. been interesting. im just responding to what you said. You said earlier that your view of her changed after you met in rl not before. i never said you were naive. in fact i said the opposite and even apologized for reiterating what should have been obvious. But i get the feeling your just being argumentative no matter what i say.

From: Isobel DeSantis Well that would depend on what exactly you learned I assume as you're here that you mean "65+% of us" I would go further and say that some of us choose to use the talents that everyone has. I have surprised and shocked many people in various virtual worlds who were convinced that it was impossible to "feel" someone online. My SL partner is a gamer; he thought SL was just another game and was stunned to realise he had feelings for me simply from interacting with me online - yes, even non-sexual interacting I believe we're all capable of sensing energy without physical contact but not everyone is prepared to allow themselves to do it. No special talents are required, except an open mind .... hmm, ok maybe that's a special talent! Isobel yay i am so happy everytime i meet or hear of someone with this ability! its the most beautiful experience in the whole entire world. it changes . . everything.

From: Kaimi Kyomoon A long time ago - I'm thinking ten years, is that possible? I used to participate in a chat room where two people met and then met in rl and fell in love and got married. Then they both moved into my rl neighborhood. I then met the woman in rl and she confided in me that she was unhappy because her husband was still carrying on internet romances with other women. *sigh* i think it was 1995 or so that the internet became a household word, although it was 1-2 years prior that people were accessing from work hubs, and home too i suspect. so 10 years is a fair number to 'guesstimate'. and i laff, because i wonder why that woman is surprised. but whatever.

From: 3Ring Binder anything learned is productive and progress. Oh I suspect there's a great deal of non-productive, non-progressive learning going on all over the place. From: someone no. i meant 65%+ of you. LOL! That reminds me of the anti-porn campaigners of the 80s and one in particular in the UK, Lord Longford. He carefully investigated various sex clubs and came to the conclusion they were obscene and would cause depravity in anyone who visited them .. except for him of course. From: someone SL is not the first internet format that opened the doors to internet relationships. this is an old, old, and ongoing phenomenon. being open minded is not the issue. being disciplined and aware, is. Yes, that's exactly why I said "in various virtual worlds" ... I've been involved in them for the last 11 years. It does indeed take a certain level of awareness along with the open-mindedness to sense energy but I've never found discipline to be either necessary or anything that I would want to cultivate. Focused intention and relaxed allowing however will bring pretty much anything you desire into your experience. Isobel

From: bilbo99 Emu ... I think if you consider SL as a microcosm of RL, you're going to find the drama queens, the ditherers, the undecided, the opinionated, the over-self-righteous, the true heros, the do-gooders but moreover, the honest-to-god average folk just out to enjoy a virtual life. I think you're going to get the same cross-section of society in SL as you do in RL ... except maybe for the third of the world who are hungry. OK, I only read the first and last pages but this seems a recurring thread. Anyone with anything between the ears should know from Day One that that glorious avatar they see in front of them is probably nothing like the keyboard operator they are conversing with, fine. Armed with this, they should be better informed that it's the character deep within the operator they are really merging with, if merging is in fact in their plan. People have pointed out avatars can 'act' a different person to how they appear. This goes for RL too. Everyday someone gets suckered into dating a really cute guy or girl to find out later they are a demon in human form. SL does not have copyright on this; it happens all over the net, it happens in face-to-face real life too. It's very sad that someone can get so hung-up on true appearance. I have had more happy conversations with total strangers in SL than RL .. and have had more happy ones than unhappy. Sweeping generalisations have little purpose for me, every new person I meet starts with a clean slate as far as I'm concerned. 40 is just a number, 42 is another.

You dont even know what you are arguing against in this post. You are shadow boxing. Flailing your arms around hoping to hit something. Quotes by 3Ring Binder in this thread : by now, i hope you have discovered that i am a pompous ass. LOL finally just one year ago i allowed it to be more than the internet with one woman (meaning, we exchanged cards and books and such via snail mail ~i have a PO Box, so thankfully it wasn't totally full disclosure). of course, it was only then that her true self came out my point was that even after 9 years of communication, i didn't 'really' know this woman until i dealt with her in RL, and then within about 4 months the disappointing reality revealed itself i was aware of all these things well before we met. it was 9 years until that, remember? my view was colored long before... i'm not sure why you assume i am so naive. but thank you for your interpretation of my reality. been interesting. (Shall i go on 3Ring or would you like to deny you posted these remarks in this thread? instead of changing your position ever 5 minutes try sticking with any remark you make. any at all . . so people can actually respond to your posts without feeling trolled please)

From: Kaimi Kyomoon Sorry I got here after the discussion of class has already about wrapped up. One of the most striking things to me when I moved to England from California a lot of years ago was how important class was over there then. In the States we almost all think of ourselves as middle class and pretty much seem to recognize only 2 other classes: Those who are way way wealthier than we are an those who are way way more desperately poor than we are. In the UK it hasn't always been just marketing experts who understood the many distinctive gradations in between. I'm glad you mentioned this. I was getting bamfoozled (permission granted for Claire to add that to her dictionary *grins) about all this class talk. /waves from the US middle class

Yet another strike against the SL/Eharmony approach. Exactly. in this particular cse Idon't theink either of them had been married before but the guy was evidently hooked on whatever he got out of on-line flirting. For people looking for real life romance I'd think the actual e-harmony method would be a lot better than trying to make it work with the stranger behind a cute avatar met in a SL dance club.

First you didnt meet your friend in real life and only gave email address etc - then sudden oh you did meet her in rl. Then your opinion of her didnt change until you met in rl and now you say your opinion of her changed long before it ever went into rl? well which is it then? since like this is your whole arguement in the thread of why you dont trust relationships that start online dont you think maybe you should have your story straight? Not that it matters anyway since i addressed the topic at length without any response from you other then your attempt to skirt the topic completely.

From: someone Not that it matters anyway since i addressed the topic at length without any response from you other then your attempt to skirt the topic completely. this is your party. i'm simply a guest. please let me address the topics you are so interested in. can you please restate them? because i am clearly too clueless to find them by myself in your previous posts.

Youve never responded to any of my ideas in this thread. and i dont expect youre very interested in anything other then creating confusion and derailing the topic. this deserves repeating right about now: From: 3Ring Binder i'd venture to guess that 65%+ of the SL population has a few screws loose (i didn't do the math according to my experience or anything). it doesn't take some of us skepticals long to sniff them out and duly note our findings (both inworld and in forums). that shouldn't sound judgemental, because it's not. but i am a practicalist and a realist, and a spade is spade, no matter its outside appearance. i feel privileged to have been gifted with this awareness tool. i do shake my head more often than i reply.... *shaking head now* and laffing too, although that's probably just plain mean. LOLOL i predict Isobel is doing quite the same thing at me, but that's ok. it's all funny.

Unless people have had psy courses in school( i have many Undergrad and Grad Level course in my university days ). All it turns out to be is internet assumptions and BS.......My field of studied req me to take many of such course because we deal wioth human nature within social setting ( Interior Design ). i appreciate that someone else besides me sees the perpetual false assumptions and misinterpretations, and hypocrisy. i realize i was not totally clear in that PO Box part, but none of that matters in reference to the thread, so i don't get what that was all about in the first place. i almost thought i was going crazy. but then, i shook my head and all was right in the world again. LOL to appease Swan, i actually had TWO (2) - that's right, two - internet friends go awry last year. the other one was longer term in internet acquaintance, and much more hurtful when it fell apart, but it really boiled down to my arrogant attitude and inability to read her signals "back off" when i should have. but i still like her, and we still communicate a little. she's not a bad person, she's just fed up. LOL but she did say some things that hurt me, but i would never burn her. oh, and since this part might matter, we did not meet in RL beyond phone calls and PO Box mailings. moving on........
