Yes i am sad to see it go as well, Bill did a fantastic job on that build. I had a shop there for quite awhile. I would definitely vote for it to be retained under some kind of official event space.
If there was such a process. _____________________

This is just another indication that the sad state of the economy is reaching into many corners. Perhaps LL should make a pitch to Congress for a bailout, and lower the prices of land use fees and private island fees? ;0 one of the things the gop demanded axed (along with a lot of educationy stuff - 'oh sure they love kids' don't they? just not like that ;0) - was 'broadband ruralfication' or something like that... i wouldn't count on enticing the repubs into thinking sl was anything all that great. (unless we reversed position on virtual child pornography ;0 - then they could simultaneously badmouth it to the electorate while they secretly come in to 'age play'... ;0) _____________________

Can't the Lindens step in and save it. It's not like they couldn't afford it Use it for low cost or free housing for newbies or something like that until they can move out and find a place of their own.
Why would they let a build as good as this just be demolished? All the time and energy that went into it and they would rather see if shut down? |

I want to point out how sad this whole business makes me.
I started a thread a while ago about wanting to rent a place (which I didn't want to name), that came with a bed that had adult poses in it. After listening to the advice in the thread, I talked with the management of the rental place and he deactivated the bed, so everything was cool. Well, that place was the SS Galaxy, where I've leased a stateroom since then. I will continue to rent the stateroom until there is no more SS Galaxy. The Galaxy was something like a playground, to me - a mostly "grownup" place that didn't mind my hanging around as a kid av. It isn't (I'll use present-tense, until it's gone) just a really big, detailed build. Many people, especially people who've shown up to see only a half dozen people on the entire ship, don't know that the Galaxy actually hosts several events every single day - either DJ sets, or sports deck competitions, or what have you - and these events draw crowds of regulars. Every Saturday (I wasn't always able to make it, but I made it to most of them), an Irish storyteller sets up in the Arboretum and reads something over the voice channel - I've never seen fewer than twenty avatars at his readings. The Grand Ballroom is formal attire only; I've been to many an event there, in fact I remember not too long ago when Martini In The Morning did a "live" broadcast from there. Jet-ski races, fireworks, pool parties. Just last week (or was it the week before? Time flies) I attended a sitting at the ship's Japanese tea garden, where one of the hosts played an interesting stringed instrument whose name I couldn't tell you, and actually sang for us in Japanese. On any given week, I attend more events on the Galaxy than at any other single place in SL. I suppose over the next two weeks, I'll have to see if there's any place in SL where the Galaxy's regulars plan on gathering for events; I've met some great people, and I'd miss them at least as much as I'll miss seeing the ship herself. _____________________

This is why Second Life is really the toughest, most hardcore game ever made.
We all want to see cool things saved. Yet, how many of us are willing to pay the tier to make it happen? * * * * * I personally would be up for LL saving maybe the top ten builds on the grid, whatever they might be. But no more than that. Because really, to do so is to tax everyone that pays tier, or rents land from a tier-payer. Suggestion: put the whole build in multiple rezzers. That way it can be taken out in adjoining sandboxes now and then, for a few hours. The market *is* incredibly tough lately, I've never seen it so tough. But it is totally possible to get enough residents to make a region financially stable. Or even fill it, with a small waiting list. *If* you work hard at it. _____________________

Please tell me the owner's going to use Second Inventory or something to get a backup of this and put it on an OSGrid server. I'll host it on my OSGrid estate happily! Hell, I'd even do the hard work of moving it, if asked. What parts of it can be moved, anyway.

Think what a huge draw it could be for any grid wanting to show people what can be achieved there! But - and it's a huge 'but' - could any current open sim guarantee to protect the copyright and IP of the builders of the Galaxy? |

No, which has been and remains the biggest barrier to transferring from SL to open sim. _____________________

I am sorry to see it go.. I have been there with my partner and 3 letters come to mind O. M .G.. I pray that somehow it is saved. O.M.G. could that mean.... One More Gone... seems rather fitting in this situation. never been to the SS Galaxy myself, but it does suck to see yet another pull out of SL I myself have sold off a good chunk of my land, and still debating if I will keep the store or pull out myself. not an easy decision. My store is peanuts compared to a lot of these places closing down, I can not imagine how hard it must have been for some of them to make that final decision. _____________________

It's a pity that every person who sees a place like this and spreads how great it is can't spare $100L (30cents) for the tip jars to keep places like this going.

An interesting point Tegg but the two jars in the Zodiac ballroom are unassigned .. or I might have during my four hours of playing piano to an empty room yesterday. It's GOTTA be saved!!!!!! Added: OK, I found the Visitors Book .. GALAXY mid .. can comment and/or pay ![]() _____________________

An interesting point Tegg but the two jars in the Zodiac ballroom are unassigned .. or I might have during my four hours of playing piano to an empty room yesterday. It's GOTTA be saved!!!!!! The tip jars are assigned during a scheduled event; there's one for the DJ, and one for the event's host, and both pay 10% to the Galaxy. To donate to the ship itself, you had to right-click on the guest book which is near the rail ahead of you as you come down the stairs out of the ballroom (left clicking it just gives you the guest book entry directions). That's the only place I'm aware of, and if it weren't for the words "Donated Last: L$xxx" in the floating text above it (which you have to get close to it to see), there's really no way of knowing that's where to donate. There are prominent kiosks for other charities and such here and there, but the Galaxy has never actively solicited venue donations the same way other venues have. It's a shame because I'm willing to bet any number of people would've been willing to give at least something if they had known that the owner was having trouble keeping up with the expenses. I suppose that's the hardest-hitting part of it, that it's so all-of-the-sudden. I suspect not even the crew knew about this until very recently; one of the other awesome things the Galaxy did was offer a free SL DJ course, including free pro-grade software, provided you agreed to do a set at one of the Galaxy's venues at least once a week for two months after the training was done. The fellow in charge of that sent out a notice asking for more prospective DJ's only a week or so ago, which wouldn't make sense if they knew the ship had less than a month of life left to it. If the landowner had said something a month or two ago, or even more...like "hey guys, it's getting a little hard to keep my head above water, here..." I have no doubt he would've gotten all kinds of help. But we're given a notice that says "unless something happens within 5 days", and what can anyone do? Nobody's going to donate thousands of lindens when it's pretty clear there'll never be enough in time to prevent the loss before the deadline. No donation of lindens will save the Galaxy. Unless someone steps in and actually buys the sims (and that situation would have its own problems, too), there's really no hope. _____________________

Well, I'm quite beside myself.
Dear Galaxy Community, It was recently announced, the SS Galaxy has been hit by a economic downturn and has not been able to sustain itself and due to close at the end of the month. Well I have very good news. The SS Galaxy will NOT close! A benefactor has agreed to take over the tier of the Galaxy. This new owner has assured me there will be little change in the day to day operations of the Galaxy. He is only interested in saving the ship from closure, not administrative duties. But Bill Stirling will take on less of a administrative role returning to Sag building projects, that have been put on hold due to lack of time. However, he shall still be around with building and doing future modifications to the Galaxy.I shall stay on as Managing Director and most of the current staff will remain as well. A new dawn has come to the Galaxy! DBDigital Epsilon Managing Director, SS Galaxy I gotta say, I really didn't think it would've happened - but it did! I feel like breakdancing. _____________________
