One of Second Life's most recognisable places and one of, if not THE romantic locations in SL, The SS Galaxy is closing on March 1st... Here's a snippet from a notecard that was given out Dear Galaxy Community,
It is with great sadness I write to inform you the SS Galaxy will be closed and deleted from the SL grid on March 1st. With the effect of the world economic downturn, the Galaxy project is unable to sustain itself. After two years to the date of this project's start and large amount of resources spent with no recovery in sight, the financier of the Galaxy have decided to call it a quits.
If no serious action comes forth to save the ship by Feb 15th, the Galaxy will be destroyed in a spectacular sinking event on March 1st. It promise to be an event of a life time, just like the Galaxy herself has been. Stay tuned for group notice on the details. This is a MAJOR loss to SL as a whole

That's one of the true Wow places in SL. I was floored the first time I saw it. I'm sorry to see it go.

There are a lot of renters to as well.... Shame.. But I never myself saw the draw of living so close... It was always a bit laggy when I went and I got lost a lot on that boat.. It's sad for sure and I'm sure we will see many, many more following suit. Go take your photos now! It is a shame so many beautiful places are leaving the grid.. No one buys as they have and the only ones who are able to pull out even are those funded by large corporations or those with disposable monies..Me myself, I will keep my sim until it's either the home light bill or the sim tier..... so far... its tough as our electric company here just raised its rates by 31%........... Which is just horrible since the unemployment rate currently is 8.1%... (and rising) sad sad sad... In this place we can escape the real world woes and kick back forget about issues we can not control and CONTROL (mostly) things within this enviorment.... Sadly those days are going fast as rl money issues all over the world effect what we see do and experience in second life.....

First Virtual Starry Night vanishes and now this. Things are looking as bad in SL as they are in RL.

I'm not as much of a fan as the rest of you.
While the build was ambitious, the lag was horrible, the shops vapid and the lack of inhabitants spooky.
Maybe I left before I had given it a fair chance. But something like the Galaxy should compel you to stay and explore, while I could not get away fast enough.

Up to a point I agree with you, I was never that taken with it, but it was ambitious, and generally succeeded in being different to anything else in SL just because of the scale. I thought it was one the better reproductions of something big from RL. Pity to see it go, even if I didn't like it that much myself, I was glad it was there as an example of what is possible here.

SS Galaxy is one heck of a build. You don't see much in SL that's conceived and built on that kind of scale and more's the shame. I'll definitely be there over the next few weeks snapping photos. At the same time I hope they find a new backer (or backers) for their project.

Bugger, that was one heck of a build, I remember stumbling on it not long after it started, a work of art to be deleted forever

Tarina says it well ... so sad so many places we could lose ourselves in, is going. Curious just a day or two back, Morgaine and I revisited one of the Titanics.

I didn't see too many renters. There are a few, but not enough to make it profitable. I seriously wondered how it made any money when I went. And sadly, I see that I was right to wonder. Too bad, it was a beautiful build. Maybe Stirling should go to LL and see if they are willing to preserve it adjacent to the Blake Sea, as an event space.

One of the advantages of never having an interest in exploring is that I've no idea what the SS Galaxy is, so I won't miss it

If they're serious about it going, they should box it up and offer it as a freebie, so what would that be a 20,000 prim freebie?

/me pokes Phil. But exploring's fun! I'm sorry to hear that it's closing. I visited the SS Galaxy once. We had no lag whatsoever...and bumped into very few people in our travels throughout the ship. Played some miniature golf...did some skeet shooting...and danced under that magnificent dome in the ballroom. We'd planned to go back and take advantage of other shipboard activities; I guess we'll have to hot foot it over there!

If they are going to sink her, I wonder if they would let me get in a little target practice?

This is just another indication that the sad state of the economy is reaching into many corners. Perhaps LL should make a pitch to Congress for a bailout, and lower the prices of land use fees and private island fees?

I have been there a few times... truely amazing build. What they created was spot on to the real deal. I always wondered how they kept it going with no real income to the owners. I will have to be there when they shut it down.... with a tear in my eye

Let me guess: the 'sinking' will be a mass unlink and turn to physical. Should be an interesting experience if it doesn't crash the sims
