From: Emjuan Beerbaum Why is this forum so negative? The same is true for MANY forums associated with MMO or similar virtual pasttime, and summed up so well in this post: http://www.wired.com/gadgets/miscellaneous/commentary/alttext/2006/11/72119 Granted it does tend to focus more on MMORPG type worlds, but the same applies here no less. The post starts with: "If you play an online game that you enjoy, there's one surefire way to spoil the experience: read the forums on the official site. There you will find a vast underworld of lost souls keening their misery onto your screen. A game you thought was entertaining, well-balanced and attractive will be torn apart before your very eyes and pronounced lacking in every conceivable way. "It doesn't matter that the complainers spend as much time on the game as you do, and probably more. While they may disagree on the nature of the flaws, they are united in agreement that whatever those flaws may be, they are unforgivable. "Herewith then, a guide to the deranged, degraded inhabitants of the forums. You cannot defeat them, they provide precious little experience, but if they get their claws on you, they may turn you into one of their own. (it then provides scarily fitting descriptions for The Power Craver The Magical Realist The Majority Stockholder The Emancipator The Eternal Quitter One-Issue Poster The Lifestyler The Deathmonger Enjoy! =)

You post flame bait and then get upset when you get scorched? These forums could not possibly be negative overall. I have had to clean the coke/wine/rum/etc... from my keyboard and monitor way too many times and I don't usually burst out laughing from negative comments. The forums are so good for my disposition, I really wish I could get to them from work. That would greatly increase the chances of my coworkers surviving another day.

Hello again Emjuan If you have been watching this forum since your last post, you may have noted that this is generally speaking a forum where residents who have SL-related problems can ask questions so that other residents can try to help them solve those problems. A place where residents can ask the advice of other residents on SL-related issues. Posting a thread, which lacks an SL-related question but seems to comprise predominantly negativity, may return few answers you might appreciate. It also takes up space that might be used more fruitfully for a real question. Having said that, please do come back and ask questions about any problems you may have and I will do my best to try and answer. Have fun

A game you thought was entertaining, well-balanced and attractive will be torn apart before your very eyes and pronounced lacking in every conceivable way..." If Alexander Graham Bell had been satisfied with the telegraph, we wouldn't have the telephone. If Marconi had been satisfied sitting around telling stories, we wouldn't have the radio. If the Wright brothers had been satisfied taking the train we wouldn't have planes. I think I've made my point. People in the forums bitch the most not because of their disdain for the "game" their playing but because of their great love for it. We are never satisfied because no matter how good it gets we always see it's greater potential. I believe that while it seems we may do nothing but complain we're probably most likely to fill out JIRA's, attend triage meetings, send emails, etc. We may get disillusioned at times. Probably more than most, but if we didn't love it so much we wouldn't keep coming back.

Everyone has pretty much summed up what goes on here. I just wanted to add my 2 cents before the lock... I have been annoyed just like everyone else at one time or another by a snippy comment or useless response. But personally, I find that usually the poster who irritates me today, can make me to snort coffee out of my nose tomorrow. *shrugs* It helps to develop a thick skin, though that is easier for some of us than others. I think that gets forgotten by some here. And making comments like "get a thicker skin" or "get over it" (or something like that) is very dismissive of the Human Being behind the post - It bothers me. Of course I am talking about valid posts - not trolls or whatever. And regarding the comment about so called "leaders" in the forum...leader might be the wrong word, but there IS a group of regular posters who have strong, assertive posting styles - these are the stronger voices in the forum. I can certainly understand how a new poster might be put off or be afraid to post; I was for a while. Until I just "got over it".

BUT to complain that you have been unfairly treated when youve wasted peoples time with a 'phoney' request for help/advice really does take the biscuit.
Good day to you sir.
Ummmm....not having read the original thread being highlighted here, and having seen the responses thus far, I would say that this comment is right on the mark. I am not "tech savvy" in any sense of the word; and, let's face it - the "In World "help and directions are very lacking. Where do I turn for assistance when none of my In-World Friends are around? That's right - I come here. So far, I have gotten 99% positive responses from the Forum to my questions, even though a few are given with a dose of humor or sarcasm. I kind of like those little doses because it demonstrates that people, members, have a sense of humor and probably can see themselves in similar shoes when they were new here. If, as stated, the original objective was to get a reaction...just remember not all reactions will the *one* you desired or scripted. If those reactions ruffled your feathers, then little or no sympathy comes from this old Hillbilly. I do know of two solutions if a little thickening of the dermis/epidermis is not feaseable for the OP: 1. Log Out; or 2. the "X" in the top right corner of the page. Either way - Problem Solved!

Sure, we definitely have a goodly number of people who critisize constructively, with jira, suggestions, pressure to improve... But we also have no shortage of those that seem more interested in just being loud and mean. Which is fine by me. (as long as they do so with style, class and humor!) Anyway, I've said it myself often enough in RL: It is far better to care and be angry or upset than it is to wallow in despair or apathy.

QFT There has to be balance, I am grumpy and get all nihilistic myself but I try to find positives where I can and I don't see the point of whining every time something goes wrong in SL!

From: Emjuan Beerbaum I should not have been treated the way I was though. I think people here use terse cute little answers to please each other and forget they are talking to and about a RL person. the answer is simple.. takes time to weed out the psychos. i'm sorry you had a miserable introduction. try again, and dont' give up. there are WAAAAAAAAAAAAY more awesome people here than not. utilize your ignore feature for those who seem a little too 'over the top' for such simple matters. trust your first instincts.
