Why is this forum so negative?

I have not read your other post so many have spoken about.. I don't plan to, I'm not considering it all in this response.

I think the most negative posts on this forum are ones like yours, Emjuan, this thread. Asking why there is so much negativity, when most of said 'negativity' is in jest or misunderstood to begin with. Help is given quite frequently, and this forum is useful for everyone involved, if only for entertainment purposes. I find it saddening that you could see this forum as a negative space, as even in those threads that are truly negative, there is always quite a bit of entertainment, and help if it was asked for to begin with.

I'm not sure why you would add
From: someone

am aware that this post too is more of a statement than a question. Don’t worry this is the last post I will make here so that I don’t annoy any one.

considering that you can say whatever you want and if it annoys someone too bad. That singles statement out of your entire post has me thinking you behave in a rather juvenile way... you're acting far too defensively, and I find it rather disconcerting that you would speak so seriously about something you obviously have a *very* biased view on. I suggest you read threads here before saying it is negative. Not just your own, but others, and see the helpfulness, entertainment, and general friendliness, even in our 'arguments'.

This forum is full of useful information, good people, funny topics, and serious discussions.

That's all I have to say..

Have fun and good luck.

Threads are treated individually. Your post was a general discussion topic not something looking for an answer and you admitted the situation you posted about was made up by you. I think that explains the responses you received.

Basically it can be summed up thusly; we have fun on this forum while answering people's questions. Unfortunately, there are many many over-sensitive emos who run away crying because the rough boys made fun of them. Grow a back bone.

Any thread starter with a question mark usually gets a lot of responses.

Put a negative word in a thread starter will also get a lot of responses.

Combine the two and you got a Hot thread!!!! It's just the way it is.

Even better than that is a Hot Thread where the OP is what is known as a lolcow (i.e can be milked for lols because they keep coming back to earnestly argue their weak weak case.) Then you get a Friday Thread.

I'm new here too guy, and I got oh, maybe one or two raised eyebrows, an eye ROLLING, and a sarcastic comment for a sexual comment I made once, but I took it for what it was, and I am still here...LIFE goes on (even in SL).
Remember this is a very diverse community, and even one 'off comment' could offend the sensibilities of somebody here. We all live and learn, so please for heaven's sake don't clam up. You are among friends here for the most part.

(P.S. I wonder how and why Cashious Clay got away with it...maybe we will never know, maybe we don't want to know, some things I guess, are better left alone)

I came and posted about 'inferior' people just to see how you would all respond. Ha! Fuled you!!!. Then I shouted "Islam FTW!!" to see how you would react and you fell for it again!! ZOMGLOL!!!111 Now, let's post another thread and see if they fall for it again!!

Y'all are being too nice to this cage rattling troll. See his other thread and note the parts that other people quoted, the parts he went back and deleted from his posts, before you say sorry.

You got treated badly becuase you're a total dork. If you throw things at the monkeys, which I think this thread is another instance of, expect poo.

edit: the other post is at http://forums.secondlife.com/showthread.php?t=227436 . When I started reading this, his post count was listed at 9 - it's at 2 right now.

I admit I am new. I only found out about SL in April of 2007. I was only around a very short time when the ask a linden or some such title was around. The posters who wanted answers were so nasty that the Lindens had enough and shut it down. Everyone was told to come to resident answers for information and help.

I have been hanging around reading this forum for only about a month now. I decided to post yesterday for the first time. I admit it was a disaster. I got everything wrong.

I should not have been treated the way I was though. I think people here use terse cute little answers to please each other and forget they are talking to and about a RL person.

I have noticed in other peoples threads that there are a certain number of people that are leaders here. You would think that they would try and be helpful, Not to encourage the belittling of posters. I am sure that there are those who post and continually abuse the forum and they should be set straight. A new poster should not be treated like trash.

The way people reply to threads on this forum is not unlike griefing in-game. They do not take into account that the poster is a real person with real feelings.

I am aware that this post too is more of a statement than a question. Don’t worry this is the last post I will make here so that I don’t annoy any one.

I'm going to wager it's because a lot of people on here have little to zero social skills in real life. I notice this about all internet forums. People rush to make flip, half-witted responses to threads posted by people outside the majority instead of actually trying to help people.

It's really sad actually, but you have to learn to let it roll off you. Just have fun with it.

There are a few old-timers here who have very little patience for basic questions from new people and that is a shame. Since this a forum to ask questions IMO there is no such thing as a stupid one-- especially considering the learning curve that SL has. This was not your situation though.

You are clearly trying to stir up trouble. Your recent posts incited strong feelings in people because of its obviously hurtful slant which you inserted from the beginning. You are the forum griefer here and you're trying again with this latest thread --all the while trying to confuse the issue by trying to portray yourself as a victim. You are not.

Use some common sense, if you start a post saying you would like to discriminate against a group of people for a stupid reason--expect hostile reactions from that group and from others. You then admit the post was a "fake" making you not only hurtful but manipulative. I'm not saying you *shouldn't* be allowed to post those things--just don't whine when people call you on your manipulative garbage. Take your little psychology experiment elsewhere.

The reason this forum is so negative is because people need a place to discuss the bad things that might happen to them, and really there are no other outlets for that. Linden Labs has notoriously bad customer service (if you don't pay for "concierge" I suppose), so it's not like you can talk to a Linden when you have a problem with Linden Labs. Linden Labs does not offer any sort of mechanism for resolving disputes with other residents who might rip off your money. If you do an abuse report, by policy, you are not entitled to receive a response as to what, if anything, Linden Labs did about it.

Linden Labs's primary customer service policy is, "If you have a problem, don't tell us about it."

With no other place to go to talk about a problem, these forums are the next likely source. One can at least comiserate with others here about there misfortunes.

I think some people also hope that Lindens do actually read the forums, and thus their voices are heard when they post here. Lindens may monitor to close forums that give Second Life bad press, but I doubt they are actually reading anything here.

Nail ---> Head

This is primarily why you find assholes online. It's easy for them to get away with it, they find it amusing, they are disconnected from emotional return, and it is 'safe' for them to act the fool.

Divas run rampant online--especially in forums. I think we have to pull from it the positive, and ignore the negative.

You've got to...ac-centuate the postive and e-lim-inate the neagative, and don't mess with Mr. Inbetween.

Your quote above is spot on.

(EDIT: by the way, I'm not saying this forum is filled with trolls..filled is a strong word. :) Really though, this forum is filled with outgoing intelligent people--this combination can easily lead to heated debate. Not that heated debates are always harmful, but it's best to keep it impersonal and passive.)

The only thing more fair game than a troll around here is a troll who turns out to be a crybaby.

Anyone else up for a troll-baiting contest?

Infact the truth is the exact opposite. The emotional return, as you put it, is the point of the exercise. A tendency to react to a situation emotionally is probably the most hilarious character flaw one can imagine. It makes compulsive viewing.

That's what you said yesterday in your thread. People were appalled and reacted. You shouldn't ask questions if you're not willing to accept the answers. After your confession that your entire thread was a fake and it's sole intent was to flame, I'd say you were treated appropriately.

I believe this thread is no more real than the one you created yesterday. I don't know whose alt you are, but enjoy your fun.

There are no leaders here in the forums, but there seem to be a lot of posters who give the impression that they are leaders.

By that I mean they are very popular, many ppl will follow them, and their posts, and look up to them.

Many times regulars of any forum, will tend to post as a pack, with one leading the way.

If one of the leaders gets slammed or "picked" on, the followers will always come to their defense beating down the one who posted against the leader.

And when you are a newcomer and put a thread that one, doesn't follow the forum rules, and two, goes against the grain of many of the core posters, then you are almost instantly outcast and thus the pack posting mentality starts.

All you can do is either take a breather, get a feel for the atmosphere, and try again later with a more acceptable post, or you can walk away.

(ass kissing is an option but not for me LOL)

The above was pertaining to any random forum, not specifically this forum.

Why is this forum so negative?
Personally I do not think it is, I see it as a mix of many individuals who do not always agree on things, but for the most part are very helpful.
I think the reason that sometimes ppl jump on another, is that they just do not agree with what the other said, and to make themselves feel better, they attack. They may also attack because they might feel a fellow poster (possible one who has the unspoken leader type status) is being attacked.
Who knows...

Any forum is what the posters make it to be.

(I am pretty sure one reason ppl tend to jump on the "this post doesn't belong here" is because they fear LL coming in and shutting this down too, after all they removed the general discussion forum)

because Vindictive Linden has reprogrammed me to be EeEeEeeeEeevil! muahahaha Torley is a mad scientist who does experiments on kittens, and Robin burns down orphanages in her spare time! I can only follow the examples of my beloved leaders :D

just kidding of course, lol

If you look at the forums overall, they are not all that negative in my honest opinion. I've been watching this bunch for about a year now; some are nasty and snippy, sure, but most are nice and helpful. You'll have people you wont get along with or are just plain trouble makers in any online format. Generally, I would say that forum members anywhere do not appreciate disingenuous posts which in the forum world is called "baiting" I believe. It is also called "flaming", I think, which means to incite some kind of reaction (usually bad & emotional) out of the audience. While it may only be to test the morality or integrity of the people in this forums for your own inquisitive curiosity, remember that people do not appreciate being deceived no matter how small the deception. Everyone makes mistakes, and one post which doesn't go over well does not mean you have to retire from hitting the New Thread button. Please, take a breath, relax, have some pie; I'll be all right; it's just a forum. :)

This forum (can be) negative because we have a social community here without the level of moderation neccesary to support one.

Instead, Linden provides us with a level of moderation consistent with a Resident Question & Answer forum, and nothing more.

One thing I like about this forum is that for the most part, if things get nasty, they calm down quickly and people apologize to each other and move on. Happened just today, as a matter of fact.

I have had my share of disagreements and made a lot of mistakes here. But there isn't one person I feel any animosity towards. :)
