Qed

What does this mean?

Google won't even let me search for "qed". I get some forbidden thing.

And Yahoo returns: Q.E.D. is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase quod erat demonstrandum, which literally means "which was to be demonstrated".

I actually have found very few of his posts to be worded in a rude way - nowhere near quite a few others posting in the forums.

If nothing else, to consider these two forum policy items:

>>

# Think before you post – sometimes in the heat of a passionate discussion you may be tempted to say something that on reflection you will regret. If your words do more harm to the community than they might give you pleasure in the short term, reconsider posting.
# Flaming, Spamming, Trolling – Flaming (posting a message that is intended to incite anger or directly attack a person or persons), Spamming (multiple posts of the same topic or discussion), and Trolling (a post with an intentionally contrary opinion written with the intent of inciting or getting argumentative opinions) are strongly discouraged. If you think your post might be over-reactive, or that it might fall into one of these definitions, please reconsider posting.

<<

Come on people!

Stop your joking around!

We are being asked to SERIOUSLY consider the above Forum Policy.

For some reason i can't get this song out of my head:

Word up (up up) everybody say
When you hear the call you've got to get it underway
Word up (up up) it's the code word
No matter where you say it you know that you'll be heard

Ok, to answer the OP title thread question: "How should I conduct myself in this forum?"

Get in where you can fit in

Try not ostracizing people too quickly

Maybe be a little less over-reactive to jokes

Join The Forum Cartel InWorld group and come to the gatherings at the Hang Out to make some more friends from the forums.

Though you may run into me....*shudder* :D

Oh, please, Mael. Chris is never rude. Blunt, yes. Sardonic, sometimes. Not rude. I know you, and a lot of people, disagree with his extreme libertarian philosophy. I have issues with it sometimes myself. But give him credit: He sticks with his beliefs consistently. I've seen him stick up for the rights of some VERY disagreeable people, people I know for a fact he himself despises...because he realizes that the rights he claims for himself must be granted to everyone, or the rights of everyone are in jeopardy.

Back to the OP for a moment. I don't know that Rime deserves slamming here. We DO sometimes let stuff slip into print that would have been better left untyped. I know I've been guilty of that. Especially when someone gets under my skin and I fire off a reply while I'm still hot.

Guidelines for Phil and I

* A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
* A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
* A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

* A robot must not, through action or inaction, make a human look stupid or step on a human's punch lines, unless it's funny.

Well, there are quite a few here, like the OP, that seem to make *assumptions* and take things way tooooooo personal and then get their panties in a bunch really quickly.

Considering so many of us prefer a "live and let live" attitude IN SL, I am so often amazed at how many want to make folks conform here in the forums.

Yeah That!

ROFL!!

They'll never manage to implement that one. It's far too easy for a machine to make a human look stupid. Even inanimate ones pull it off.

Uhm...over-reactive?

See this thread: /118/67/318538/1.html

A guy posts a survey question. I post some humor. You over react. The OP laughs with me - he and I have a friendly exchange. And you leave the thread declaring I am on ignore.

Over-reactive?

I read that thread, and didn't find any humor in it.

All right, I believe that some people may have found your post humorous. I found it boring and trite, the sort of post that says "Hey, look at me, I don't need to be helpful because I'm a comic." It borders on rude, and whatever positive it may contribute to the forums in the way of entertainment is far less than the negative it contributes to the reputation of the forums being unhelpful. To his credit, the OP has a thick skin and ignored it; to your credit, you actually were helpful in a subsequent post.

I'm not opposed to humor in the forums, but I suggest this guideline: Make helpfulness a higher priority than entertainment. If the OP has already been helped, then fine, crack a joke. If not, then first say something helpful, then crack the joke - but make sure the helpfulness outweighs the joke. And don't joke at someone's expense.

Oh, please, Mael. Chris is never rude. Blunt, yes. Sardonic, sometimes. Not rude.

rude (adjective)
1 offensively impolite or ill-mannered.
2 referring to sex in a way considered improper and offensive.
3 very abrupt eg a rude awakening.
4 vigorous or hearty eg rude health.
5 roughly made or done; lacking sophistication.
6 ignorant and uneducated.

By the OED 's definitions I think Chris qualifies as rude on several counts. I'd be happy to be in that gang as well.

Pep (Definition 1 is purely subjective in any case)

That's why there's a loophole in it, duh.

(Machines have a low sense of humor)

Yea, but you are rather, non-humorous and always so damn serious in your posts, like this one.

Using both "trite" and "boring" is somewhat redundant, FYI.

Thanks for the guidelines...

And i believe i post more helpful information for residents asking questions than many people, including yourself. So if you can't take my occasional trips down to Sillyville in my posts, put me on ignore. :D
