Talking about the proposed health care bill?
They're doing it wrong.
Is it true that anyone over a certain age with an expensive to treat illness will be counseled to consider suicide instead?
Is it true that private health care will become ILLEGAL?
Two reasons to be very, very afraid of these changes, if so.

That would be one way to get some of those bastards out of office if it were true. Oh, wait, never mind. They never expect the laws they create to apply to them...silly me. What was I thinking.

From: Melita Magic Is it true that anyone over a certain age with an expensive to treat illness will be counseled to consider suicide instead? The term "end of life care" is the new sanitized phrase I've been hearing on the news, in debates, etc. I received an "alert" type email that included the following: From: someone To all of you seniors, and soon-to-be seniors, this is a must read. The stimulus bill is going to cut your medical coverage, and your years of life. It actually suggests making medical decisions based on how long you will live by getting the procedure/medicine. So, if you're 29, you get everything medically approved because you have a long life ahead of you. If you're 59... well, hmmm, that's another story. Because of your age and life expectancy, your medical coverage will be curtailed. That's right! If you are a senior and you get cancer or some other catastrophic illness, you may not get medical attention simply because you're "too old." Sounds like euthanasia to me!!! Most of you know by now that the Senate20version (at least) of the "stimulus" bill includes provisions for extensive rationing of health care for senior citizens... The author of this part of the bill, former tax delinquent senator, Tom Daschle was credited today by Bloomberg with the following statement: Bloomberg: "Daschle says health-care reform 'will not be pain free.' "Seniors should be more accepting of the conditions that come with age instead of treating them.” Go here to read the article: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601039&refer=columnist_mccaughey&sid=aLzfDxfbwhzs(Highlighting mine) From: Melita Magic Two reasons to be very, very afraid of these changes, if so. Exactly!!!

Yep...from the same email above: From: someone If this does not sufficiently raise your ire, just remember that Senators and Congressmen have their own healthcare plan that is first dollar or very low co-pay which they are guaranteed the remainder of their lives and are not subject to this new law if it passes.

*ahhhhhh!!* It's odd, though; I was using this same analogy to someone in RL when discussing all of these issues. The old man at the end of that film, that's our future in America. Wheeeee.

This is being heavily spun on both sides, no doubt, so who knows where the truth lies. I do think the idea is quite possible, this is the type of statist group think that appears to be gaining hold in Washington, where certain people are being told they will have to make sacrifices for the good of everyone else. Of course, those asking for sacrifices never seem to have to make any themselves. That being said, I don't know if this idea is in the IMMEDIATE plans, it just sounds too draconian for even this bunch of cossacks. They are saying that all it means is that "end of life counseling" will be available and covered under Medicare, for those ho wish it. Even so, it is scary. I believe firmly that someone should be able to end their life if they are suffering, but they should not be told that they should by the Government.

Especially since someone who is ill may already have situational depression and could possibly be easily influenced to end their life, when they might not want to given some time and a chance to recover.

From: Czari Zenovka That's a HUGE jump in conclusion to make about someone you don't know. I daresay Chris may know MORE about socialism than you do.
For myself, I keep myself as informed as possible via many different outlets. I listen to points of views from opposing sides.
But as for socialism, I know a little about it having been in Jr. High in Miami during the Cuban revolution and was in class with many students whose families, many very wealthy, successful business people in Cuba, fled to Miami with just the clothes on their backs and started all over again. Same with other socialist countries. And I find it interesting that people from around the world flock to the U.S. for medical services and not vice versa.
So let's not be making these wild and frankly insulting statements. When you have a bit more life experience under your belt, I'll be more prone to give much credence to anything you say. Slow down. HE was on MY case and I was simply returning HIS "favour". Okay, so the "Loud Arrogant Redneck" (as he clearly states) is a much beloved personality around here but I DO know "something" about socialism and I dont think (if you read what I have written) I have been "insulting". The proposed health bill in USA is NOT a Cuban Missile Crisis.

From: Melita Magic Don't confuse it with the way it works in other countries - this bill is a completely different animal. I know what it is. It shouldnt be discussed here. It causes dissent and upset. Many people here have a very intense opinion of this and I am withdrawing from this commentary/debate. I hope it all works well for USA in whatever format occurs. It's not my business and my opinion is neither appreciated nor called for. SL forum can remain an American virtual site.

I don't read anyone as being upset. I think our group just likes a healthy debate. You mentioned the House of Commons - that's what it's like in here sometimes! But no one seems to stay mad, even if anyone does get temporarily heated at times.
Sure it is your business, if you want it to be. It's your world also.
Is private health care illegal in the UK by the way?
Having that as part of a bill in a famously capitalistic competitive society strikes me as a whole new America in itself.

I dont live in UK. As I say, withdrawing now. It's okay. I think much of this health care response is a knee-jerk reaction.

I see the two points I mentioned as serious reasons for concern. I have also discussed this with people in RL whose business it is to look at the effects of all of this long term. But I can't go into all of it here. I agree that it is probably too serious a topic for a game forum, but it's one that concerns a lot of people.

Two reasons to be very, very afraid of these changes, if so. Well, is it? My guess would be no, it's not true, 'cos it sounds so wildly unlikely, but I'm willing to be persuaded otherwise by sound evidence (by which I mean something more authoratitive than, "well, I read in in a blog somewhere" . I mean, not being an American I don't know, but it strikes me that if one weighs up the balance of probabilities between the likelihood of any US politician in his or her right mind proposing to make private health care ILLEGAL (or even illegal) and the likelihood of some raving blogger somewhere who doesn't like these health care proposals spouting nonsense about them, one is impelled to a particular conclusion.

From: Czari Zenovka The term "end of life care" is the new sanitized phrase I've been hearing on the news, in debates, etc. From: Brenda Connolly This is being heavily spun on both sides, no doubt, so who knows where the truth lies. SPIN is definitely correct. If you actually read the health care bill, as currently being debated by the House, you will see that "end of life care" simply refers to all the things that the aged and terminally ill have to deal with -- hospice care, nursing care, easing pain for non-curable illnesses, as well as info on things link Living Wills and such. Nowhere in there does it actually talk about counseling anyone on suicide, doctor assisted or not. Also the Bloomberg article mentioned above is a 'commentary' piece and actually contains a lot of misinformation if you go and actually read the stimulus bill - both the version referenced in that Feb article and the final version passed. And example being that the national database is not required by the bill - the bill requires a recommendation regarding such a thing. I will be the first to say that the stimulus bill should never have been done and I am very much against the Health Care plan. However, I am just as much against all of the propaganda that BOTH sides are spinning on this. The truth, the whole truth and ONLY the truth is what we should be seeking here.

If the bill includes an instruction for doctors to counsel patients toward suicide as a treatment option, as it appears it does do, then it is true and it is a cause for concern - as well as going against a lot of people's beliefs.
