From: Brenda Connolly Sort of a Healthcare Credit Union. I've heard that mentioned before. It is a good idea. Way too logical, therefore not allowed. Government cannot in any way be associated with anything that is efficient, logical or has reasonable costs.

From: Void Singer not everyone has got on your case... but I don't think anyone agrees that it's "welfare"
(and I find the discussion of real life taxes amusing... the rich rape the taxes system far worse than the poor, but it's oh no, the poor are cheating.... it's simple, if you set up a system, everyone will try to push their best advantage, some legally, others not... and you don't you're dumb git) Touche

Government cannot in any way be associated with anything that is efficient, logical or has reasonable costs. To do so would render them largely unnecssary.

From: Innula Zenovka But are doctors not allowed to practice privately in Canada?
Certainly in the UK, doctors can work wholly for the NHS or wholly on their own account or have a mixed practice. A surgeon friend of mine performs non-urgent operations on NHS patients on certain days and private patients (i.e. those funded by insurance companies) on others, the difference being you get your choose the date of your non-urgent surgery (and you probably get it sooner) if you see him privately. Many European countries have a similar set-up, as far as I know. Sorry Innula, maybe this is about some confusion of language. In Canada, doctors don't actually "work for" the government per se. They have their own practices, are affiliated with hospitals (which are independent, but strongly funded and regulated by the government), etc. GPs also choose their own patients. For all intents, medicare functions much like a private health care scheme: most important services and procedures are covered (from check-ups and vaccinations, up to major surgical procedures), while those that are deemed elective are generally not. (The definition of what is covered can be contentious and political). When a service is not covered, the user pays, frequently with a private health insurance that is most usually a job benefit. So, doctors will sometimes bill the government, and sometimes the user/private health insurer, depending on the particular service. But no one can opt out of billing the government for what it covers: you couldn't, for instance, charge a different fee for a medicare-covered check up, and bill the patient directly. Nor can you top up what the government pays by charging the patient extra. One additional and rather important part of the system, of course, is that the government also regulates what can be charged for government-funded services.

From: Briana Dawson 18 million choosing to not insure themselves will be receiving our welfare health care on the backs of those that work and pay into the system because they do not want to - they choose to spend their money on porn, gambling, drugs, credit card debt (which they should not have run up in the first place!!!!) etc..
Let them eat cake on the tax dollars of someone else.
Count me in as one of the 18 million I guess. I've been receiving Social Security and Medi-Cal for 3 years. I was having seizures and severe vertigo at the time which kind of makes it difficult to work. In addition, my license was taken away for awhile because of the seizures. I'm still dealing with some medical issues, but should be returning to work and/or school this Fall. (I hope!!!) I am also not allowed to own a gun for 5 years. I don't really care cause I wouldn't have a gun in my house. I've also been told I'll never be able to be insured again. That's both medical and life insurance. The expenses are too high As for the others you listed above. Yes, they do exist, however, having worked with those on the streets, the vast majority have severe mental disorders, such as schizophrenia, etc. Because it's you, Briana, I'll cut you some slack, but must admit I was more than a little offended by your comments. It's a lot more complicated than just labeling people at random and saying they are all losers.

From: Briana Dawson 47 million uninsured.... whatever
- 38 percent of this 47 million -- almost 18 million -- make more than $50,000 a year, 10 million of them make more than $75,000.

I read her post as her not wanting to pay to insure the 18 million that make more than $50,000 and simply *choose* to not insure themselves --- rather than the other 62% of the 47 million that probably honestly need the assistance.
