I just wish SL would change the name to black and not African American. I chatted with a man from Africa one day who was not the lease bit happy about it.

there actually needs to be a medium set instead. I know I would personally get offended if I was called black, I prefer the term African American myself. I would never address anybody as black. but thats just me

Interesting point. Is it an SL rule that African American is used instead of black? I wonder what Britons and French and Germans of African extraction would think about this?

Inside we are all the same it is the colors of the outside that make us unique.

I say Black BTW and have never had anyone tell me it was offensive. It is not a sign of disrespect ... I call a white person white.... To be offended by that is un realistic.

But, I have a few dark skins I have made and a few deeply tanned, they are not the glossy look like gooy shine on the stomach but they are rather nice.. If you want one I will send it.

Oh NVM you are male.. Uh I dont htink you want these then...

It's a funny world. My partner who is black, is highly offended when someone refers to him as African American. He immediately responds that he has never been to Africa, has no plans to go to Africa and therefore is simply an American.

It's hard to make everyone happy, for sure.

Might be generational: my stepmom HATES "African-American" and likes "Black." She's in her 60s.

She hates "Ebonics" and I support it. Go figure. I'm the new(er) generation, and while she is very progressive...she does not like the modern discourse on race. We have lively discussions at home though, as a happy multi-racial family. My general attitude is simple: I find out what a given person likes to be called and call them that. It's easy. :)

I think I'll start checking the box marked "Other" and writing in "European-American".

"Yo whitey!!" would have the same result.

What happened to the old fashioned. "Hey mister/madam"? And leaving out the colour of their skin. Maybe that'll help.

Would someone with aborignal roots in Brazil be South-American-American?
Obviously, the native tribes of America would be the only true American-Americans.

But... It seems generally accepted science that the human species originated in East Africa.

So we're all African Americans.

and all those white south africans... they would also be called african americans if living in america? fw declerk african american? maybe call them 'white african americans' then? or would that be racist? oh this is sl. a black man living in kenya is african american as well? what race is he??
 i prefer 'black', 'white', 'asian', etc. all this pc phrasology is too stupid to bother with imo. the only one that seems sensible is 'native american', and i use it merely to distinguish then from indians from india, not as a result of some politically correct motivation.

I am 'white' but I have a Mediterranian olive skin colour and so a very Nordic Finnish person might not think of me as white.

Skin colour exists, it's part of us, like our hair colour or our stature. I see no harm in using it as part of a description of someone's appearance. But it should never be used to discriminate, except perhaps in the case of actors playing a character - I mean, it would be silly to have a white man playing Nelson Madella in film about him, wouldn't it!

I used to know a white (e.g. ethnically European) person from the Carribean who spoke with a Jamaican type accent.

Well, I'm not much into human skins so I can't help there, but Tokushi makes an amazingly cool African Hunting Dog avatar.

I really wish I could do skins. This seems like a huge market opportunity.

Funny you should say that: after speaking to one guy with a big Jamaican accent several times on the phone he turned up in person, and was a short white guy.

Pep (What was really funny was that his surname was Blackman!!!)

Well in non-Africans can be called African-x
Why can't non-Americans, be called x-American?

It would seem fair.
