*nods* I tried to cancel my RL subscription, but I'm addicted to it as well. It costs less too :p

I too was dangerously hooked on RL. I was on the street and someone's behavior brought me to tears and I realized that I was spending too much time being serious in RL so I got a SL
And discovered the joys of eject and ban.

I have to say if someone brings me to tears in SL my first reaction woudlnt be to blame SL, it would be to blame the person that brought me to tears.

No I'd blame myself for getting that upset over SL.

I think thats the line of thinking the OP was going for, and that they reacted that way because they were here too much. Been there, done that.....came back.. It is always good not to cancel your account or toss away all your stuff, or you just have to start all over! Though, thats fun too...

You are right that in most cases would be stupid to cry over something someone did in SL.

But theres a couple people in SL worth crying over.

I have been where you are at several times. Real tears, hiding out in sl, pondering if i should stay or go.

But for me, it always comes back to this:
Real life i know i can do
Second Life?
not so sure
lol
so i have to keep coming back - it's the rebel in me

Like others have said I would also say to take some time away
let yourself breathe in some real air
and then decide
cuz the good thing is you can change your mind again whenever you want to
and as often as you want to

After being reduced to tears by someone's behaviour on a sim (laughing about my over reaction now!) I decided I've been spending far too much time on SL and it's time to return full time to RL.

I've made some friends there and will miss them but it's time to leave it behind and move back to reality.

I think it can perhaps become an unhealthy and overly time consuming obsession and if there aren't support groups for 'addicts' out there yet there probably should be.

Probably spitting in the wind to bring this up here, but does anyone else have thoughts on this?

I think it's Sad that Connecting with people Emotionally (And yes, getting your feelings hurt) is something that is considered unhealthy. My experiences in SL have run a real Roller coaster of Emotions. I've lost dear friends (To Death in RL) I've shared Intimate, and poignient Moments with Lovers. I've been Angry, and frustrated, and Amused to the point of laughing out loud. I Spend a lot of Time in SL, i'm rather shy IRL and Dislike crowds of unfamiliar people, but i've found SL socializing, and Empathizing HAS been making me Open up more IRL. Yes, i Get stung once in a while. But it's nothing leathal. I think perhaps the fact that i DO have the Option to just quit any time makes me Stay, and Tough things out. Something i Needed to learn to do IRL where there is no Off Button.

Angel.

In all seriousness *adjusts to a serious face now* after peeking in world, you only joined about a month ago. After being in SL for a while you learn that sometimes people have their heads so far up their (muttergrumblemutter) that they are seeing the light of day peek through their mouth as they open it to yap away and suddenly, you just dont care anymore. People are rude, obnoxious, and can really hurt someones feelings if you arent prepared. Sorry you had a bad situation, but if I left for every time someone said something I got upset about I would have missed out on a lot of fantastic people places n things!

Good luck wherever you go though!

Not only that, but my first month I was on SL all the time. Everyone in my RL was concerned. With time I still love it but find that if I spend too much time I get bored very quickly. Now I feel I have a very healthy balance.

I think people hit a wall after about a month. They've learned to maneuver through SL, they've explored, they've gotten the idea...and then they wonder, What am I doing here?

Unlike MMORPGs like World of Warcraft, SL doesn't hand you a set of objectives and goals to keep you sucked in with a supplied "purpose". You have to answer that question yourself. Lots of people don't come up with an answer, or a chosen purpose or set of goals, so they leave. Others do come up with them, and they stay.

Don't worry; either way, it's all good.

I know someone else mentioned this in this thread, but the above could also be said of RL, no-one hands you your goals or objectives, you gotta do that on your own. You probably just got unlucky with that particular person, the same way that you'll probably meet people like that in RL, but I honestly have to say, that the majority of people I've met in SL are wonderfully friendly, helpful people who are so generous with their time and knowledge and always willing to answer the most stupid of questions (a lot like the ones I ask...)

SL can be a great experience, and I've learned tons and tons of new things, clothing creation, building, texturing, I've even learned how to use Photoshop, something that I couldn't have given a toss about before I started on SL..... So maybe just stick around a little longer, and you never know what you may learn....

If you need help with anything etc, please feel free to IM me and if I'm around I'd be glad to help or show you what I've learned.

More power to you, Himiko! I was a bit startled when a friend of mine also decided to back out from SL - after spending a substantial amount of time building up his presence in the world. But he voiced some very cogent reasons - among them the unreliability of customer service, continued problems with griefers, a screwed-up worldview on virtual property ownership, and an increasing hunger for a global presence that's left most people rather nonplussed.
I'm sticking around out of sheer curiosity, rather than any abiding interest any longer. I think SL definitely jumped the shark when they decided to add voice - the final bit of evidence that they're a bit more concerned with adding more bells and whisltes, instead of dealing with scalability issues and end-user experiences.
But I can more than understand the OP's feelings...perhaps she'll come back and check in from time to time and see what's happening.

if I left everytime someone pissed me off, or everytime something went wrong, I would need a revolving door cuz I would just keep coming back

I like SL, but just like anything else it can crash and booboo etc

doesn't mean I am gonna leave cuz if it

however if you want to leave then by all means do so

I agree with one of the posts I read, kinda ironic you post to say good bye yet never posted before that

don't think you will see many ppl crying for you to stay

my RL subscription costs a bit more than my SL subscription.... wonder what kind of account you have set up in RL that it is less than free (after all SL is free unless you choose not to be a free account holder)

dunno any RL account like that, even those on the streets have to pay for some stuff at some point or another and I am sure it costs more than the cost of an isp and broken down cost per use of your computer cost, which eventually would be free or so minuscule it would be worthless to mention

oh hell I am rambling, but I am allowed, at least today (psssst it is my birthday, RL one)
43 today!!! where did the time go????

ah yes but one still has to pay for clothes in RL and shoes, and hell even hair (wigs, hair dresser etc) and comparing to the homeless is not a fair comparison, since they can not enter SL)

don't forget in SL there is no medical needs so no insurance, nor is there house payments, or car payments or those insurances, also there are repair costs in RL that we do not have in SL

so at least for me, my RL subscription is much much more than my SL premium subscription hehe

and ty for the happy birthday wishes :)

I have donated any money I had to a worthwhile cause, and because I uninstalled the program yesterday and will not be reinstalling *EVER* unhappily my 'stuff' stays where it is until it is vanished by the lindens.

I have been reading up on SL obsession and can only suggest others do the same. It is very eye (and mind) opening. Try this article and take a look at the comments:

I don't now know why I ever wanted to spend so much time on it, it is harmful and I will certainly never go back.

I have my life back.

Namaste.

Beer and sex and chips and gravy can be harmful too. Life's a bit crap generally if you over analyse it.
