After being reduced to tears by someone's behaviour on a sim (laughing about my over reaction now!) I decided I've been spending far too much time on SL and it's time to return full time to RL.
I've made some friends there and will miss them but it's time to leave it behind and move back to reality.
I think it can perhaps become an unhealthy and overly time consuming obsession and if there aren't support groups for 'addicts' out there yet there probably should be.
Probably spitting in the wind to bring this up here, but does anyone else have thoughts on this?

Just pondering the irony that your very first post on the forums is saying goodbye to the folks you never said hello to.

When I felt like that I took a month off. Don't have a garage sale for your inventory just yet. Take a month off and read some Eckhart Tolle and The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz.

In all seriousness *adjusts to a serious face now* after peeking in world, you only joined about a month ago. After being in SL for a while you learn that sometimes people have their heads so far up their (muttergrumblemutter) that they are seeing the light of day peek through their mouth as they open it to yap away and suddenly, you just dont care anymore. People are rude, obnoxious, and can really hurt someones feelings if you arent prepared. Sorry you had a bad situation, but if I left for every time someone said something I got upset about I would have missed out on a lot of fantastic people places n things!
Good luck wherever you go though!

Himi hon, I don't think you would have posted this if you didn't, deep down, want to stay. And I can understand that, even if you really don't need/want SL particularly, leaving in this way must feel sorta like a defeat.
So, two things: > It's just a game, go if you need to. > It sounds like it is probably very possible that you just found people that you don't get along with. There are more decent places/people, and more intriguing things to do, and if you find them you will probably want to stay.
Post again if you want recommendations. Be sure to say the type of things you are interested in, RL.

Good luck wherever you go though! I think people hit a wall after about a month. They've learned to maneuver through SL, they've explored, they've gotten the idea...and then they wonder, What am I doing here? Unlike MMORPGs like World of Warcraft, SL doesn't hand you a set of objectives and goals to keep you sucked in with a supplied "purpose". You have to answer that question yourself. Lots of people don't come up with an answer, or a chosen purpose or set of goals, so they leave. Others do come up with them, and they stay. Don't worry; either way, it's all good.

BTW if you cancel your account - which I have done so it will stop working v. soon - there is a fee to reactivate it. I will not be doing this but perhaps it's something to take a mental note of.

I found that SL was extremely addicting for the first month - it was something new after all - but then it mellowed after that first month. I still usually log in each day but I'm not living in world the entire time that I'm not at work (which was pretty much the case for that first month). I do still spend an extreme amount of time on the forums, but I consider that educational as I'm learning about SL and the folks in it. So take some time off and don't sweat it right away. For many, that initial addiction does dwindle down somewhat. And don't let some a-hole affect your perceptions -- there are plenty of those types in RL too.

Odds are if you post to forums, you are not exactly gonna go permanently... ...this is not a bad thing per se, but, just the voice of someone who has seen many 'leave' in the past. People who actually leave just sorta vanish and stay gone, alts and all. Usually with a trail of where they went: Warcraft, or whatever, where they entrench and never* come back. My only serious thought: don't do anything financially foolish on 'exit.' *"never,'" meaning: they log in once a year maybe, shrug, and log out after 10 minutes more convinced than ever. I've got a few worlds behind me like that, myself.
