From: Boy Lane Why would you want to work around this? This was in fact a requested feature by many and it ensures an existing SL viewer and CV do not interfere with each other (and this caused a lot of problems earlier). Oh yeah, how is that done actually? I think its some constants but I haven't really looked. I had an idea, the whole reason people want to keep the setting stuff to an existing installation is to use the old settings from SL without setting new ones all over again. SO I had an idea, what if the viewer tries to look for an existing user setting folder of the SL client and copies everything over into the new one from the first time the client is started? I was going to take a look into it but im not sure where all this application data stuff is handled...

I did try this the other day - DL'ed it no problem. I didn't want to hassle with the voice setup and yes I get that's not something u can do from what u sd about it - one question on that though is why the the Kirsten ones do have voice? I may have misunderstood and I do apologize if I did- i gathered the code for adding voice was not available or such? Not real up on the techie stuff- sorry. But, my question is, other than Restrained Life which I don't use, what is the actual incentive for Cool Viewer- I think I read was less given to crashing but since I am not using the SL one anyway I am not having that issue much. Not putting down Cool Viewer please- just want to know why I should switch if I should (although the no voice thng is an off puter for me)

From: Nexii Malthus I had an idea, the whole reason people want to keep the setting stuff to an existing installation is to use the old settings from SL without setting new ones all over again. Exactly that is the issue. You can not use existing settings due to the added functionality. In the past people had all kind of problems by overlapping settings, back and forth, in CV and SL. The only way for a clean working viewer would be to remove any existing settings or use a different settings file. There is no point in sharing, it causes nothing but headache . The settings are hardcoded in the viewer. No big deal to change if you know how to compile your own viewer, but not configurable either without. It takes less than 5 mins to go through the preferences and set the viewer how one likes it.

KLee distributes components that are not legally redistributable in a 3rd party viewer. The licensing question was asked in the SLDev mailing list but there was no conclusive answer. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Third_Party_LibrariesFor a full list of Cool Viewer features please have a look at the Release Notes. Way too much to mention here : http://coolviewer.googlecode.com/files/releasenotes.txtInconclusive list: CV's legacy User interface with a clean, simple and userfriendly layout Cool Features in Preferences for easy switching of features Marine Kelley's RestrainedLife (off per default) Bulk permission editing Enhanced building tools Flexible Sculpties Double click to wear attachments "Worn" tab in inventory Large Prims (currently only for Opensim grids due to SL limitations) Maximized Network Bandwidth Flexible Grid selection at login for SL and all OpenSims? MU Pose Style and OOC double parenthesis auto-close for enhanced roleplay Teleport History Improved Graphics rendering, especially for ATI users (measured >1/3 faster than the official viewer)

From: Nina Stepford i dont want multiple sets of chatlogs Oh yes, you want them in a safe location , because that protects them from getting deleted without a notice by different viewers like the latest RC...

@Nina
I used that argument before. But in practical usage it is pointless. I'm not going to use more than one viewer, besides some testing. And I keep my logs in that one main viewer. It has more advantages than disadvantages. I strongly suggest *not* to mix any data with another viewer. It was shared in the past, and it caused nothing but problems.
After reading this again, not sure if everybody is aware of this, if you really want to share directories you can do this in Preferences / Communication. But as I wrote, I suggest not to do it.

What I LOVE about the Cool viewer is the ability to set multiple permissions! When dealing with a bed with 80 animations that someone wants copy, it saves so much work! That its faster I did not actually notice I must say, with my Intel 945 all viewers are slow

Yep I really wish not only the outside Viewers but the LL RCs and Beta viewers all specified separate caches etc. One viewer goes buggy and none will work right until you delete all of the settings and sometimes you have to uninstall every single one and then reinstall. This happened the other day with the http texture viewer. Boy: Great job on the Rainbow viewer BTW!

From: Nina Stepford or maybe i would prefer the continuity of logs not be broken depending upon which viewer i use. I have most of the various flavors of viewers set up, and I point all of them to the same location for chat logs, so that the continuity stays the same no matter which viewer I have running at the time. Mine are set to D:\SecondLife\ChatLogs\Active - then I have a process that once a week takes the logs from active, archives them up and moves them to \Archived

Boy I do love the legacy version, it runs extremely smooth on my Intel 945 chipset. Only thing is that some sculpts rez very bad (4 plants in 1 prim sculpts, planes). Since I sell plants based on that, it sucks Now I did install the Windlight version as well, but that crashes without a message. It gets to the login screen but before I can type anything, its gone again. Any clues?

Most likely your graphics card and driver. Intel is worse than ATI and that's difficult to top

From: Boy Lane Most likely your graphics card and driver. Intel is worse than ATI and that's difficult to top Well weird enough I never had any problem with regular viewers except from the framerate of course. Never crash or anything. What I do love about the legacy viewer by the way, is that its the only viewer that deoes not mess up my wireless connection. With regular viewers, my wireless drops a few times per day, and I even have to reset the wireless router quite often. With the legacy Cool viewer: never. If only the sculpts would rez right I would never use anything else!

From: Marcel Flatley Well weird enough I never had any problem with regular viewers except from the framerate of course. Never crash or anything. I have an older HP laptop with Intel GMA915. It has the same badly rendered fonts as brand new ATI cards: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3947. Besides that it runs more or less ok with a non windlight viewer. And unlike ATi cards it indeed doesn't crash For the sculpties, they were implemented sometime in these older viewer versions, I don't recall exactly when and what, but mileage may vary with the display. 1.19 should actually display them properly.

I just tried, in Win XP, to create a shortcut key for Cool Viewer, using the normal win xp method for creating shortcut key in the Cool Viewer's shortcut's properties dialog.
I did the same for the freeware file viewer Irfanview, and that did work.
Is there some reason why Cool Viewer won't start with a Windows shortcut key?

From: SuezanneC Baskerville Is there some reason why Cool Viewer won't start with a Windows shortcut key? It does for me and always did. But there are a number of commandline options you may want to try: "C:\Program Files\CoolViewer\CoolViewer.exe" --channel "Cool SL Viewer" --settings settings_1.22.xml --set SystemLanguage en-us
