The only people that can be scammed this way are the fools that do not bother to read what they are clicking on. I have lost sympathy for the idiots that refuse to look out for themselves and want to blame everyone else for "what is done to them". The whole damn US has turned in to one big "let's put in all sorts of regulations and wave red flags everywhere to help the average person be more irresponsible". We really need to get back to a mode of just plain being responsible for our own actions -- and hell, online is as good a place as any to start.
/end rant .

From: Pussycat Catnap I've never seen anything in SL that could auto-charge me without a permissions popup. I'm stingy on group joining then you missed out on the quicktime exploit that was (half-assed) patched....

Do some people just join groups quickly, the same way they hand out friendship requests?
I think I have like 4 groups and I have no idea what any of them are. Thing is, I think there are as many groups as there are people in SL. Why would someone pay to join any one when there are tons for free?
SO, just like the real world, are people going to soon be charged for accepting friendship requests too?

From: LittleMe Jewell This sounds like when you landed, they automatically present the GROUP Join Blue Box. I just tested this with my alt and my group and it DOES show the fee in that blue box and you get an option of whether or not to join: And if you click the "Accept" button, you then get a confirmation dialog box. If you did not properly read that stuff, it is your fault. If you did, then file a support ticket with LL giving them all details. it didnt confirm or notify that there's a group join fee its just like that typical blue pop up group join invite then i clicked join...anyway im done sending the group owner a notecard

From: Novis Dyrssen Of course they do. Two weeks ago one of mine was actually acted upon within five minutes, so I have seen the results with my own eyes.
Because you whine here instead of doing the AR? I dont have an AR in the pie menu

From: treat Pick What if there's nothing to read on? The invite dialog always includes what the enrollment fee is (It will say "There is no cost to join this group" if there is no fee). It's a system-generated message.

From: Starfire Desade You really just need one group for that... your own.. then you can change the name of the owner's title to anything at any time. Or, a personal hovertext script. There is a free copy one at my shop.

The one thing that's a little insidious about this is that it does differentially target newbies, because pretty much only newbies have any free group slots. Those of us who would have to weigh the political symbolism of leaving any of our groups are accustomed to saying "no" to all such offers without even thinking about it--the join fee being the least of the disincentives. It's not as if we could just click "Join" and anything would actually happen.
Other than making the confirmation box orange and scary, I wouldn't know what could be done differently--and when all the confirmation boxes are orange and scary, none of them will scare anybody. For that matter, even the few that are there now aren't enough to scare some people, as witness the loss of land to bots and the granting of PERMISSION_DEBIT, despite dire warnings.

Pep (Compulsory on all coffee cups?) See, that's where they go wrong. They should have a pictogram of a person's tongue with flames shooting off it.

It's easy to say "Don't click on anything until you've read it" - but at least once I've read something, gone to click on it, and had another blue box slide down as I was clicking and get clicked instead. (Some goof was sending my alt repeated friendship requests.) No harm done, in that instance, but it wouldn't hurt to change the format of the group invite so it can't be accidentally clicked that way.
Off to scope out the jira previously mentioned.

Yes I have also accidentally clicked on something because I was trying to click through a pile of annoying announcements/offers/teleport invites/what have you, and sometimes if something came in and sandwiched itself there briefly it got clicked on too.
That's how they get ya.
By the way, how do you tell if there is a fee for being in a group? I don't mean a join group fee, is there another fee, for being in a group - charges monthly or something?

I could have refused if when the enrollment fee was included but neither of that was written, the only words that was written on the invite dialog was Join group and below that was join or declined then i clicked join and thats when my 200L got deducted i imed and sent notecard to the group owner but maybe she cant understand me the only reply i got was hi and rent? lol

It this is really how it happened using one of the LL viewers, then it's an exploit and deserves a jira in the SEC category. (I can almost imagine a way such a thing could be possible, maybe, *maybe*, so it would be worth investigating.)

Even for 'no-fee' groups, after you click accept on the invite, I think you still get a confirmation window.
