I think you can charge entry fee in the about land. Do you get a choice if you want to pay?

That sucks then. If they are just somehow docking your account w/o permission, you're right, they are just thieves.

Oh, so you kind of had a choice, I wonder if it will become more common with having to have POF much more now for adult ratings.

This sounds like when you landed, they automatically present the GROUP Join Blue Box. I just tested this with my alt and my group and it DOES show the fee in that blue box and you get an option of whether or not to join:

And if you click the "Accept" button, you then get a confirmation dialog box.

If you did not properly read that stuff, it is your fault. If you did, then file a support ticket with LL giving them all details.

I've never seen anything in SL that could auto-charge me without a permissions popup. I'm stingy on group joining - I still haven't joined a group that I'm really interested in because it charges $1L to join.

And group joinings ask me if I want to join, even when they auto-trigger.

One way to be safe might be to make sure you are always in 25 groups - then just drop one if you actually want to join something. There are plenty of semi-dead groups or store groups you can join just to fill out the list...

I'm in all kinds of things - some of them just so I can apply a silly title; like 'Hippie' or 'Sex Kitten' or whatever.

Of course they do. Two weeks ago one of mine was actually acted upon within five minutes, so I have seen the results with my own eyes.

Because you whine here instead of doing the AR?

You really just need one group for that... your own.. then you can change the name of the owner's title to anything at any time.

I don't thing there is any auto group join thingy, at least I have never before witnessed one. I'm pretty sure you had to be given a choice.

Also you state that in your opinion a theft above 200L should be banned. How did you arrive at that number? I would think any theft should be a bannable offense.

Last, good events in SL take a great deal of planning, time, effort, and money. People regularly pay an admission at clubs and bars in RL. Why is it so unacceptable to some that they may have to pay a cover charge in SL?

In preferences there's a setting to notify of L$ spent. The default is "notify if $ >10L". Set it to 0 (Zero). Slipping 9$,9$,9$,9$,9$,9$,... till your count is drained in 2 minutes is never amusing.

It's impossible to force you to join any group, whether the group has membership fee or not. True they can set up land so that you cannot be there without joining the group, but that is still your choice. You will never join taht group without explicitly telling the client that you want to be a member of the group.

It's very important that you make an informed choice. If you have no information to go on save the fact that you're being asked to join a group, just say no. It works quite effectively.

Go into your account on this site. Look at "transaction history." Copy and paste anything that they charged you, and include it in your complaint to Linden Labs.

I'm not sure how they managed to dock you without your clicking an okay but if it's possible to auto join a group and then get charged for it, I guess that's how.

No mystery here, they are using one of the group inviter bots to offer joining a group that has a membership charge.

NOTHING illegal in that.

The OP was silly enough to say yes to joining the group without first looking to see if there was a charge listed in the blue dialog box.

I'm sure a lot of people do get caught because they don't read the notice, but its not illegal.

"Yet" being the operative word. The word is now out that there's a new way to scam residents out of money and by the end of the week, the grid will be full of these little operations.

Ooohh, we can dust off all the "I was ripped off by a landbot" threads.

There's nothing new about this tactic. It's been around as long as it's ever been possible to charge for group membership.

The obvious lesson to be learned here is, *never* automatically or blindly accept *anything* without checking it out and reading the fine print. This applies to both RL *and* SL.

Oh, I know it's been around for a while, but it never got popular with the scammer crowd. The more publicity it gets via forums will lead to an uptick of incidences until LL finally decides to turn that box orange. That's the way all SL scams have progressed, they are subject to fads just like anything else.
