I actually like the feature that notifies me when someone removes me from their list.

So do I. Its saved one friendship for me.

Contacted someone, chatted with them for a bit, friended, and at one point he sent me his personal version of War and Peace in chat ( :D ), and at the end asked why I hadn't been responding back. Turns out he was the tab that was outside the view of my chat window... I never noticed he was chatting with me.

But I did notice the removal. So I IM'd him, and it took me to that tab and I saw all his chatting and me not responding and sorted it out. :)

I have too many people in my friend list. I have become totally desensitised to the "so and so has logged on" messages. I wouldn't mind if some of them removed me and I have taken to threatening in a joking manner to remove everyone.

Oddly, for a couple of friends I never got a calling card. Don't know why. Pretty sure I didn't delete them.
It could be a case of you offering them friendship? Try that with me, we talked inworld but haven't friended each other yet. Offer me friendship, and see if you get a callingcard from me when I accept.

You should not be sad because people change in SL. This can be an account created for roleplay purposes, who can switch gender as easy as an Real life actor will switch between roles. I guess this when you say it was an alt. (How did you know that? From the person?)Maybe they was not sure how to explain their use of SL for you. See it as a nice, but too short friendship.

I made my male alt when I was roleplaying and the city needed warriors. I learned I suck in fighting from that sparring experience, LOL. I still have him, and vent him once in a while. I have toyed with the thought of a gender-neutral name and a multipurpose avatar who can use an fantasy avatar like a dragoon or robot, but not come so far yet.

I can do that if you want, but one of the missing cards is that of the RL friend who introduced me to SL. She befriended me. Actually, I've never offered friendship so far; it's always been the other way around.

Well, I think it's a sad thing. At least it is when it's someone you like. That said, had there not been so much in RL going wrong too, I would probably have taken it better. One damn thing after another.

I now know because they have written such in their profile. Before there was no such indication; now it specifically declares it is an alt which will change frequently depending upon the person's current interests.

Have to say, I just don't "get" the whole alt thing. Sometimes wonder if I'm the only person who doesn't have or want one.

I don't see the point in an alt unless you are making and adjusting animations and poses. You can look however you like, any shape and can pop a title above your head with your RP name. Why go to the trouble of and have split inventories?

I also like people to know who I am and to be accountable for what I do and say.

You aren't. I don't have one either, I can't imagine what I'd do with one although I know many folks with many alts, many forms, and each alt has its' world, its' imagination, lol so to speak, does its' own thing totally seperate from the rest........which may just mean I"m too immersed in real to be able to carry off an alt.

I think there are legit reasons for having an alt. I created one -- which I've never actually used, however -- as a fallback in case I get banned from certain, um . . . places. Others use them for building, content creation, and so forth.

But I also think it's legit to have one (or more) to explore different sides of your personality. It's not something I personally feel the need to do -- I'm pretty one-dimensional :p -- but I can see how someone might want to use an alt or alts in this way.

Me too. I can see/understand it, I just don't see me doing it. One of our greeters on VA Island has a male alt she brings in for backup if some sweet, innocent new resident just won't stop with requests for the sexxxxxxoorrrrsss.........there are reasons, definitely, I just don't know what I, personally would do with one.

I don't have any alts either. SL is about what I do, not what or who I am. I use the one avi to do everything, including RP.

Flipping letters on lucky chairs.

Roleplaying certainly is a valid reason. A titler may not hack it for a variety of reasons. An alt can also come in very handy for holding your Realkey.

I've used alts for artistic reasons, like shapshots I can't do with just one avatar.

It's been mentioned before that if something goes wrong with payment on a premium account, Linden Lab may delete your inventory. It's not a bad idea to create an alt to manage your premium affairs so irreplaceable items in your inventory aren't at risk.

Sometimes for shallow reasons like when new names are released and you just have to have one.

Sure, personally, I agree. There really isn't much that I want to do or be in SL that I can't do now. The problem is that I am only a theoretical "immersionist": in practice, really, I'm "me" here.

Because I'm interested in identity, and particularly in gender identity in SL, I've thought about creating a male avi. But I find the idea of doing that intimidating. I'm not entirely convinced I could "pull it off," and I'm not sure what I'd learn from it.

Yeah, but a distinction that we don't tend to make very often is between two different types of RP. There is, on the one hand, the sort of RP that one engages in if one is using an avi of a different sex, or species, or what have you. And then there is RP *within* SL, where one's avi is actually RPing. If I decided to become an elf in a fantasy RP, for instance, I wouldn't bother creating a new avi for the purpose: "Scylla" would simply take on a new shape, skin, and wardrobe, and would essentially be RPing herself.

Did that make any sense?

I have alts. The main one is used for testing and positioning animations. Some others are used as demo models and castle characters, and the rest are retired traffic bots.

They are open to it if you want to organise the party, but the watches were too costly so I just threw them out on their ears.

For the most part, you'd learn how "peaceful" wandering about SL is as a male, with almost no unwelcome "SEX ??" IMs.....

Just as I always recommend that Brits should visit the USA and vice versa, I think experiencing SL as the opposite gender is educational.........

Yeah, I agree . . . in theory. I've suggested to men before that they should try being a female in SL for a while for precisely that reason. I guess maybe, one day, I should take my own advice.

Do I have to learn to belch loudly and scratch my balls? So much I'd need to know . . .

It does, it's pretty much what I would do if the situation arose. I generally don't roleplay anything other than "Me", a human female, so it's always ow I would act in that given scenario within it's context, but occasionally I will play a different character in addition to "myself" usually for story purposes. In those situations I just put on a different avi, put on a titler with her name on it and go.

You don't have to. The thing to know is, that if you decided to, no one would give it a 2nd thought, unlike if Scylla decided to belch while scratching her cootchie, everyone would be all  :p

No, every time they get close to the official retirement age, LL raises it by a couple of years.

I have often wished for me to be able to set that ability myself for each person. Only about half the people on my friends list do I care about knowing when they come online. I would untick the box for the other half.

I have one that I use as the co-owner in my groups so there is always 2 people in the group and if I accidentally remove myself from that group, the alt can invite me back and give me back the owner role. I have another that is male that I've used for the pose adjusting. I have another female that I've used for testing various permissions and SL Jira issues.

I had forgotten about this one. When my premium renewal comes due again, I'll likely cancel it on this account and make my lesser used alt the premium. She doesn't have enough inventory to even worry about anyway.
