Sorry Nicks - the use of any "copybot" system in SL can get you banned - it does not matter why or for what purpose you are using it. Is that true even if the purpose is unarguably innocent? What if I'm playing with permissions and accidentally lock something I created? (No, I would never do that, but it's easy for a newbie builder to make such a mistake.) What if the creator has left SL, but has given me permission to modify something? Or even to copy it, because they no longer care? The most pertinent example is a content creator using copybot technology to move stuff to other grids. I don't know whether the existing copybots do this - I've never used one, nor even tried scripting one - but I think it's theoretically possible to dump all of the primitive parameters of an object in a structured text format. Then this could be cut and paste into another grid, where an object there could read the format and recreate the structure of the object. It wouldn't get textures or scripts, but if you're the legitimate owner of those, it's not a problem. And yeah, it's a severe mixed blessing for content creators. Someone implementing such a system could and should choose to limit it to objects where the creator matches the owner and user. But I don't think there's any easy way to guarantee that. |

The use of copybot has its own AR category "Intellectual Property Infringement -> CopyBot or Permissions Exp..." Using CopyBot on other peoples creations is against the TOS so you can be banned. |

Here's what I dislike, buy a dress for near L$1000, discover that one part of it has the prims set to full bright. This part of the dress is no modify.
I can't wear this with lighting set to midnight as it looks stupid. So far I have spent several weeks waiting for responses to notecards repeatedly sent to a creator who has told me on a different occassion that she only uses low graphics setting and doesn't notice this as a problem. That's when I got a mink wrap with 80 or so prims, each with light source set to full intensity. Now, i'm getting a bit tired of this, i've paid for a faulty product with an unresponsive creator. Copying this errant part of this item and setting to not full bright could be done in a matter of minutes... In RL, I can take scissors and a thread to fix faulty clothes, it is not unreasonable to expect that we may wish to have non faulty goods in SL. if the creator won't fix it, our only recourse is to do it ourselves. |
