or What I have learned in my very short time in world. I saw Second Life through pictures on Flickr long before I decided to actually enter the world, and I was shocked and dismayed when I was “born” and looked at the critter on the screen. So I hurriedly tried to figure out how to “fix” myself with little to no money down.

Constructing your Avatar:
Seven locations (and many more, but here’s three) have a wide range of items to help you set yourself up for 0L or 1L:
Male and Female:
- Sarah Nerd’s Freebie place (look at picks in Sarah Nerd’s profile, I do not recall the actual name): skin, eyes, shape, clothes, hair, etc.
- Black Moon (clothing place): men and women - shapes, hair, clothes, skin
- Calla (a hair place): has Jack in the box and Jill in the box; skin, hair (1 male, at least 3 female)
- The Free Dove
- Gnubies
- Enkythings
- Freebie Jeebies
- Nyte N Day Newbie package: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Nyte%20N%20Day/144/156/28

---
Body:
Hair:
- Gurl6 - free hair for new residents: pick any hair and it will be sent to you (I love my January 2008 limited edition hair)
- Diversity - mentioned on other lists, haven’t checked them out
- ETD - discount and near free hair, also think they are having a sale right now
- Calla - 1 male wig, and at least 3 female wigs - free
- Special mention: Sarah Nerd’s freebie place - love at least one of the hair wigs from there :)
---
Shape:
I created my own, the ultimate freebie :)

- I do not know of any shape creators that have quality free or near free shapes, though the three places mentioned at the beginning have free shapes.
---
Skin:
Male:
The places mentioned at the start, Calla and the like, have male skin.
Tete a Pied male skin package (OL): http://slurl.com/secondlife/Fleur/190/156/24

Female:
Tete a Pied - 0L bundle of great newbie skin (I keep returning to one particular skin myself from here :) - and because it was 0L and didn’t have the restrictions Sin Skins had, I grew attached to it before saw Sin Skins :))
Tete a Pied female skin package (OL): http://slurl.com/secondlife/Fleur/110/205/24
Sin Skins - 1L and need to be at least 24 hours old and less than 30 days old - has “fresh” version of all product lines except for the “Special” and “Tan Visage” lines
Sin Skins female skin package (1L): http://slurl.com/secondlife/Sin%20Skins/28/8/26

---
Eyes:
Found realistic lovely eyes from Sarah Nerd’s. Not sure if there are eye shops actually, and if so if they have special deals for newbies.
---
Walking animation:
- Men - Sarah Nerd’s place has a Gangsta & Cool a/o package - default male walk, which I haven’t seen, might be better.
- Women - Sarah Nerd’s has a nice A/O package (looks like a wood woman, mixed in with other boxes)
---
Clothing:
- $25 Diva
Female:
- Awesome Designs - 1L and Discount store: outstanding items (note, make sure you don’t go crazy and buy everything there as it contains discounts with the 1L outfits, some for 100L or thereabout).
Awesome Designs 1L and Discount store (Female): http://slurl.com/secondlife/Awesome%20Isle/174/108/25
- Tart: 25L outfits in the “Noobs” section. Note: be careful :) The denim overalls caught me bra-less and . . um . . exposed.
Tart clothing store (female NOOBs secition: 25L for newbies): http://slurl.com/secondlife/Yarna/51/44/54
- Pixeldolls - great free package with many options for 0L near entrance.
Pixeldolls female clothing package (0L): http://slurl.com/secondlife/Port%20Seraphine/29/145/57
- Szentasha Fashions: 1 Free Outfit, just touch for your choice: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Whisper/25/230/37

Male:
See the Jack in the Box at Calla, and the tux at Black Moon, and the many clothes at Sarah Nerd’s.

Jewelry:
- Miriel

Tips for the Completely New:
1. Your avatar is made up of a body that is composed of a shape (underlying body configuration), a skin (the skin tone, shadowing, shading, make-up, freckles, etc.), hair (prim or non-prim; separate from the skin/shape), eyes (separate from the shape and skin), clothing, and attachments. Technically all of this, except attachments, is in the “Appearance” pop-up and can be fiddled with at the same time, but it is easier to think of these as separate areas of concern.

2. Important tip about changing your clothing, or adding a hat or shoes or . . .. Do not use “Replace Outfit” unless you want to really replace everything - detach your hair, detach all attachments, and remove all clothing and have it all replaced by whatever you are trying to attach. Choose, instead, “Add to Outfit.” I learned this one the hard way (ended up bald, without my animation over-rider, shoe-less, but wearing a nice very tiny dress . . the kind where I instantly looked and noticed that I was not wearing panties - it was that short; to make things more interesting, the owner/creator turned up right then and stood next to me).

3. Your walk/stand/sit can be controlled through an animation over-rider that uses a set of poses and animation in one gadget. Or you can just use the pre-set newbie stumble.

4. Attend classes: NCI, GQ Start.

So, where are the other special offers for newbies? :)

There are at least two other threads on this subject, but I can seem to only find one of them at the moment:

Boy, at the risk of being jumped on...

Most of this information has been stickied at the start of this forum.

There is new resident package being widely distributed with same said information.

This thread, when people get done commenting on it, will disappear and the information no longer readily viewable.

Just saying...

I do not understand. I do not see where the special offers for newbies can be find in the stickered threads. That was what this thread was supposed to be about. I put the tips in the beginning so I wouldn't have to later define what a shape was or a skin in that section. And then put the rest of the tips together up there to keep them together. I guess I could just remove that section.

And I read the new resident package. It did not include everything that is in here, and it doesn't include all the special offers for those under 30 or new born. I just don't want to turn 31 days old and suddenly find out all the great deals I could have gotten.
--
Oh, and there is also the matter that this isn't all about tips it is what is about what is out there now. It is a time sensitive thing. Now all stores open now will be open in the future. Not all stores open now will have the specials in the future. Like the Nyte N Day place doesn't seem to have that newbie package any longer.

This does lead me to realize that I can't write and shouldn't think of a blog are anything like that. Well, good to know.

It doesn't hurt to post it again. Nice advice, Kitten.

Lucrezia...can some of Kitten's picks be used to update the Newcomer's Kit?

And I'd add my very favorite freebie place, Kitten...The Free Dove.

And some places to get more detailed information, in the form of classes: The Shelter, NCI, GQ Start.

You got most of the 30-day deals that I remember ... I know there are many more, but I don't have them written down.

For freebies/L$1 ...

I assume you've been to the Free Dove and Gnubies and Enkythings.

But a lot of folks don't know about Freebie Jeebies (Wilted Rose's freebie shop). It's very good.

And ... I'm not sure ... but doesn't Nomine have a 30-day skin thing?

Yes, Kitten, there are eye stores ... but I don't know of a 30-day deal at one. Miriel's eye store might have that or freebies ... her jewelry freebies are very nice, if you like non-bling jewelry.

You're right - the freebie offers are various stores aren't in the stickies and Lucretia's package, and probably should be.

As far as not being able to write, who said that? ;) Your information was good on very much on point - it's just sadly going to scroll off as new posts come along :(

If you're interested in some further freebies, some time-limited, you can visit my blog, Second Life Freebies at http://secondlifefreebies.blogspot.com or Fabulously Free at http://fabfree.wordpress.com/

I pulled my back out yesterday and in a lot of pain. I'm thinking I should go away and come out to play tomorrow ;)

Just to clarify - The Shelter doesn't offer any classes. (NCI does a fantastic job at that! :))

The Shelter is more of a safe hangout for New Residents that want to be in a place where they're safe from getting hit on, or griefed. Everything we do is PG rated, and completely free for everyone, from regularly scheduled free game shows, to a balloon ride, dancing, to a big selection of freebies that have been generously donated :)

Everyone is welcome to stop by and hang out - regardless of whether you're a new resident or not. You just have to be the type of person that enjoys being around people new to Second Life :)

Hi, Kitten. I think it's great to see someone so new to SL jumping right into the forums, and trying to help other newbies. I was lucky when I started playing because my husband had already been on SL for a few months so could give me pointers. However, I didn't know about all the free stuff until well after my 30-day date. Even Free Dove wasn't something I knew about right away. But I did know about them in time to help a RL friend when she started on SL. Sadly, she's not inworld anymore since her laptop really had issues with SL. I'm working on getting her back on, though....lol. Another good place, and it's for everyone not just newbies, is $25 Diva. Everything there is $L25 or less. They have just about everything, I think, and most of it is pretty nice. I think my entire wardrobe was from there for my first couple of months, anyway. They have pants sets, skirt sets, dresses, gowns, silks, lingerie, bathing suits, hair, shoes, etc. If you've never been there, just type $25 in search, and you'll find it. Also, another help for newbies are stores where some transferrable items are resold. You can get nice deals on some of the items from SL well-known designers at places like that. Just try typing "resell" in search and checking places out. Most stores in SL offer some type of freebie item. I even have a dress I give as a freebie in my little stores. It's something I made when I first started out making clothes, but I thought it was cute and wanted something decent to give away to people. Whenever you shop, always look around, you're bound to find something for free that isn't restricted to those under 30days.

You bet. I noticed last night when kitting out my new alt that some of the Landmarks have changed. The kit is in dire need of an overhaul which I'll get on this month now.

To the OP -- thanks for the great info as there are some things I don't have in the New Resident Kit.

Cheers.

Question: Was there something wrong with my viewer, or does the male Tete a Pied free skin come with a white t-shirt fixed in place? Unremovable? A comment at the forum hangout lead me to Last Call's sale (the men's store part). Some nice clothing, but almost all seemed to involve showing lots of chest skin. Which makes the Tete a Pied free male skin unusable if there is a white t-shirt fixed in place.

I do not see a thread about the Valentine's Day treasure hunt going on (and probably already over, odd to end it so soon), so I'll mention it here.

The third thing I did in Second Life was to randomly wander the forum, and I found this thread. I basically threw a dart at the listed places and went to Calla and saw a advertisement board there for the Valentine's day/Anti-valentine's day hunt, and fell into going to every place listed. Great gifts hidden around, one or two treasure boxes never found. Clothing complimented numerous times as I wandered around, which is great, since I had been putting on the treasure hunt gifts as I found them.

So, why mention this hunt in this thread? I found that this specific treasure hunt was a great way to examine and explore Second Life. I have no idea if other hunts would be good ways to explore Second Life, but this one certainly was.

I'm going to try some less hectic things for a little bit, though, as this really was tiring. Great places found, great stuff found, but a tiring process.

Oh, and the hunt had clothing, jewelry, shapes/skins, shoes, and hair. Along with textures (never found that box), furniture (again, never found that box), and "other" (the treasure in the box was a giant hat with a light on it and a sign that had the Valentine's day symbol on it. That would have been great to wear while wandering around the hunt, but I found it at the last place I went to on the hunt).

Hmm, I think ETD is closed right now for redesign. I know the sale was pure insanity - not a place I would have wanted to go as a newbie when I didn't know about camming around to shop, as opposed to trying to walk.....

So, why mention this hunt in this thread?

it's probably not mentioned because #1 someone didn't know, and/or #2 it's temporary.

but you can find several treasure hunts (and other interesting places) in the search tab, where you can click "events", type in what you are seeking (in this case 'valentines') and go to it from there.

there are a LOT of events right now, and a ton of good deals. everything is not always free, but some people have just the BEST prices... most of my favorite places have been discovered by going to events.

best.

Shenlei Flasheart has set up a New Resident Spa called Departures on the site of the now defunct Prim & Proper store. The makeover kit includes "one of five skin choices, one of five shape choices, an AO, 9 pairs of eyes, 5 pairs of shoes, 4 full sets of prim jewelry (3 color change, one physics engine link), 10 hair dos (choose from blond, black, redhead, or brunette) and 5 complete outfits: a corporate set, a semi formal dress, a formal gown with gloves, a casual dress, and a set of casual jeans and tops." All for £1.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Shengri%20La/217/26/66/

Currently it just caters for women but Shenlei told me that she'll be adding men's items soon.
