Oh, also, there are 'Jill in the Box' and 'Jack in the Box' kits at Linden Lifestyles. Jill is better, but SL is a woman's world, after all. ;)

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Hmm, I think ETD is closed right now for redesign. I know the sale was pure insanity - not a place I would have wanted to go as a newbie when I didn't know about camming around to shop, as opposed to trying to walk.....

I am glad that I tried Calla, first, then. Crowded, but not hard to walk around.

I did notice that there were some places where it seemed I was walking through jello. And one place where I kept getting an insufficient memory warning and then crashed. I was so tired by that point that I just shrugged and moved on to something else instead of getting discouraged or not returning to Second Life (well, I didn't immediately return to Second Life).

Camming?

--skin--
I entered through two places, Avatar Island and CSI:NY. Long story short - I was someone else for a few hours the day I started, but I lost my password and had to start over (both starting community portals involved them e-mailing me my password, but I lost the email of the first place after being in world). Both places were found through the communities feature, and I started first through Avatar Island. An interesting orientation, but it seemed as if the information about that community implied that I'd get to use a picture or something, and they would give me a "better" skin. I found, after everything was done, that the "your picture to skin" process cost several thousand Lindens and was not, as the info blurb about the place seemed to imply, free for the people that entered through their orientation.

I "created" a nice little skin through the orientation on Avatar Island, and I think it was better than the default (Avatar Island had me arrive and then ask my gender, I had no choice over the starting avatar; CSI:NY had 12 avatar choices (6 male, 6 female)). But. The default skin I got through CSI:NY was several levels more impressive than the one I made (or the default).

I have no idea, at this point, who made the default skin I got when I first arrived in world in my first go around a few hours before I became Belfire.

I found several great skins on the treasure hunt, but I was blown away by a skin at one of the places I wandered into in the hunt and I blew a small stack of cash on it. I just had to have it. Yes, I know the various sticky threads mention not spending money for a little bit as a new resident (well, I read that somewhere), but I just had to have that skin. I love the shape I got from that treasure hunt, good skin in that same box, but both skins had underclothing on the skin, that was not removable. Treasure hunt hair, clothing, jewelry, shoes, expensive skin. I look good, if I do say so myself. I believe I am now set, baring an improvement to the eye-balls. Set for what? I do not know. Oh yes, set to explore and wander Second Life.

Camming?

Depending on your draw distance and the size of the shop, you can disable camera constraints and look all around without moving much.

Hi, I just wanted to add that Adam and Eve are offering a free pair of shoes of your choice for avatars 30 days old or less and they really are lovely. I'm a newbie (just over 30 days old) and I'd loved to of seen a thread like this, unfortunately I didn't have access to these amazing forums when I first started out.

Thank you for the thread Kitten, I'm sure it will help many people who don't have the money but want to look and feel special in sl :)

Ps. My first post! This thread lured me out of lurking lol

There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

You should also have a look at this blog

http://slfreestyle.blogspot.com/

it's updated every day with the some of the newest and best freebies and low cost items in SL, and gives slurl's to them. It's mostly for Female av's but does have male stuff now and again.

Thank-you, I spent my second day in world going down this list and this thread. Some notes:

- Tete a Pied is now Fleur
- Tart no longer resides at the place mentioned in this thread, and I only spotted two outfits that were free when I eventually tracked it down.
- Pixeldolls - I looked at several locations that had that name, but I just never could find the free box.

- Add the Fabulously Free group and Headquarters to the list (uses the Another Shop template to create their own female free skins. And some male ones as well, though I think the male ones are only in the group notices and not out to be picked up).
- Add "Another Shop" - for great free female skin/shapes (there are male skins on the blog, but I do not know how to use them, nor do I want to use them).

or What I have learned in my very short time in world. I saw Second Life through pictures on Flickr long before I decided to actually enter the world, and I was shocked and dismayed when I was “born” and looked at the critter on the screen. So I hurriedly tried to figure out how to “fix” myself with little to no money down.

It's another website based shopping site...you'll need to register and then go to one of their kiosks in-world to confirm you're you.

Since this popped back; Bastchild & Lotus, a very good designer of gothic/modern clothing now has a freebie store called Evocative.

Was there yesterday and it's filled with exceptionally good clothing for men and women, jewelry and one skin for both sexes. Bastchild promises to keep things continuously updated (today I got an IM that she included an "eye" set).

Ok, thank-you. Another website based shopping site? There are others geared towards Second Life?

This is also a great blog for information on designer-specific freebies:

This was what I needed!

Hello everyone

I think I am now in information overload condition, but the advice is well taken. Since starting out in SL a few short days ago, I have learned that some AVs, like some RL people can be trusted to tell you the things you need to know.

One thing remains. How does SL get to be so addictive?? I never played games (I mean computer games), but then, I didn't play with dolls or like dressing up (much)!

This place is a wonderland, and I haven't seen 2% of it yet. Wow.

Love & Peace

Ay

Hi, Ayesha, and welcome to Second Life and the Second Life Forums.

You'll find a great bunch of people here! The forum regulars have an in-world group, too. Do a search on "The Forum Cartel". Plus, there is a group-owned clubhouse where we hang out.

Feel free to post your questions here. Well, not HERE, this is a real old thread. But here in the Resident Answers forum. I guarantee you, you'll get responses.

(Notice I said, "responses", not "answers". You'll get answers, too...but sometimes the off topic responses are far more entertaining.)

Oh I love Onrez, just joined this week. Also Savior Hair blog has a pretty good newbie hair listing for places to get free/almost free hair. Fashion Consolidated group can be a good one to join. They send out notices on new fashion releases...also notifies of freebies and special deals that various stores are having. Although be forewarned, you get A LOT of notices.

Or you could just follow Ann around. She seems to know where all the good stuff is. :)
