Hi guys! Relatively newish person here. Although I have worked out most of the basics of SL, one thing keeps cropping up. I have a bought skin that I like and I have some outfits that I have also bought, they fit ok. BUT it seems that every time I buy a new shirt - it is too short. I look at the resizing sliders in Appearance for clothes and the slider is maxed out and the shirt looks like a mid riff! I am not "over sized" or taller than most or anything. I have search and searched but I can't find an answer as to why. It is bumming me out a bit as atm buying a new shirt is a bit hit and miss as to it fitting or not Any help or advice appreciated! Thank you. Just as a side note we recorded a podcast this week in SL, was a hoot. If you want to know more just ask. (this is a genuine question - not about to advertise )

Girl avatar, right? It's 'working as intended'. A short shirt will always be a short shirt, as it was intended to be a SHORT SHIRT. You just need to find a clothing designer that makes decent clothing. PixelDolls is the first that comes to mind but there are a few others out there. Personally I like to dress my avatar conservatively and .. it was really tough to begin with. I had to do a lot of shop-hopping.

Jacket layer
11-19-2007 01:34
Shirts on shirt layers only reach so far down. What you do if you want a longer shirt is wear it in the jacket layer. So if you buy a shirt and want it to cover your belly, check before you buy if it comes in the jacket layer.
For women it's not such a big problem but for men it is, showing belly looks silly.

What kind of shirts are they? Male or female?
I have shirts that come in 'tucked' and 'untucked' versions, and they usually have two parts and you have to wear both to cover that unseemly midriff.

OK to set a few things straight. I am male and AV is male I am getting male shirts. Some of the T-shirts that I had before I got this skin were fitting fine... maybe they don't like the new'ish skin I have not come across the tucked and untucked versions. Also the T-shirts that I do have that fit - are fine... not sure what makes some of them not fit. If I need to get decent clothes - any suggestions? Sorry about the language - shirt to me is synonyms = ie they can mean the same thing here in Oz.

Sandy beat me to it.
I was going to say it's the usual low rise jean problem. It's a common problem in SL because not all designers label their jeans as low rise. What I do is go to a shop where some of the jeans are labeled low rise and then I assume the ones that aren't labeled are high rise. It works most of the time.
If you want to be absolutely sure, then IM the owner before purchasing. It is very frustrating.

Shirts on the shirt layer are usually too short for guys, unless your pants are really high waisted. As someone else said, look for shirts made on the jacket layer (check the symbol). Some designers offer versions on both layers. Of course, if you want to wear a shirt and a jacket, you're screwed.

Pretty sure there must have been new pants added to the wardrobe about the time of the new skin. A recent thread, /327/6a/220863/1.html, gave the reasons for this problem. It's an artifact of the avatar's shirt layer and what designers are doing with the "rise" of pants. So, when wearing "low rise" pants--and lots of them are--it's either wear a jacket-layer shirt (which will be "untucked" and overlap on top of the pants layer), or a shirt-layer shirt that comes with a "tucked" midriff-covering extension on (of all things) the underpants layer, or with an "untucked" extension on the skirt layer (which almost never looks right).

errr yeah great game... BUUUUUUUT Funny the things that SL brings about. But one thing I have not done is to change the pants and then test the T's They may well be low rise jeans (I thought that chicks only wore them...) I'll let you know how I get on... Once I restart SL since it just crashed

You guys are magic! The jeans were low rise and I was wearing some shirts as a jacket layer (these were more expensive versions ironically). Changed the pants and no more beer gut.
Thanks heaps - should have come here first.
BTW do you guys really know any good clothes shops for blokes?

<cough> Helluva game last night, eh? <cough> This, from someone who earlier said pink is going to be BIG this year!! MIA have quite a large male range .... I'd teleport there and go make a coffee mind .. many textures make laggy performance .... in fact, make it a roast ..... or write your memoirs. P.S. if you make a roast, invite the hobbit!

My partner was having a total 'mare last weekend trying to find clothes that he liked. I totally support the jacket option for shirt makers. I can't stand tees that are too short, particularly this time of year! Just bought a gorgeous t-shirt from Dutch that has the shirt and underpants thing going on so it's nice and long, really happy with that design too. And what's with all these low rise jeans? There's low rise and there's socks...I don't think some of these designers can tell the difference

These short shirts and low pants are common. They're much worse when they're not modifiable.
Don't buy non-mod anything as you'll get stuck with not being able to change it the way you like. Example: Pants that come too tight for men. You either wear them like that or you let them rot in your inventory. Either way you lose out.
There's no logic for making clothes non mod. The people who make clothes say they don't want their items changed by those who purchase them. I think these people forget once they sell their wares it doesn't belong to them anymore and the purchaser can do as they wish.

From: Ricardo Harris They're much worse when they're not modifiable. Well, not really. I mean, I happen to agree that no-mod clothes are just silly, but the low-rise pants problem is sorta beyond the ability to "mod around": once there's alpha where the belt should be, it's kinda all over for doing anything in the Editor.

From: Ricardo Harris They're much worse when they're not modifiable. I have a couple of skirts, non-prim, that hang on me like Saturn's Rings. I expand my hips and they grow out too. I wish I could resize the skirt but they're non-mod. I'm never going to buy non-mod again.

The non-prim skirts in SL suck. It's to do with the skirt template rather than any error the designer's made. No amount of modding will fix it. Best to stick to prim skirts imho and steer clear of non-prim ones.
