Are you ok with other people telling you how to enjoy your sex life, too, or is that something only you are entitled to do? I'm trying not to be snide, but really, who are you to tell people how to express their sexuality?

Who are you to express your sexuality to others who aren't interested? That's the issue with the group tags, the obscene profiles, etc. What you display to the public must adhere to the community standards. What you do in private with other willing participants is entirely between you and the other participants, unless it infringes on the Terms of Service. I can't believe there have been so many pages upon pages of discussion on what should be a simple, understandable concept.

And for the Record..none of this offends me personally. I have an annoying habit of playing Devil's Advocate. It's an occupational hazard.

Belonging to a group is much different than engaging you in one's sexual preferences.

I feel like all the talk of the last week has been overly reactionary. We are still allowed to have our freedom in SL. Ageplayers weren't banned. There is still no one policing us or interfering with our private actions. They are just trying to put a coat of whitewash over things to appease politicians, corporations and whatever company that is eventually going to buy them out. Go about your business. Just don't shout it from the mountaintops. Wise droppings from the Figtree indeed. ![]() _____________________

Linden Lab sets the standards. Have you read the CS? If you can't understand the difference between what is generally accepted as obscene, and what is not, then you have the problem, not Linden Lab.

Who are you to express your sexuality to others who aren't interested? That's what I kept saying to David Hasselhoff. But he keeps showing up on TV regardless. _____________________

Oh please. You're essentially asking for a line item list of words, phrases, depictions and behaviors that are defined as obscene. Have you even an ounce of common sense?

Try taking a poll of people, asking what's obscene. I bet you'll get a wide range of answers, running the gamut from simple nudity to scat play. Whose standards am I supposed to go by? Hell, I don't even know what your standard is. _____________________

Common sense isn't as common as you think. Different households, people, and nations view different acts as obscene. What we need is actual written law here, not rule by mob opinion. |

Using the word obscene also is counter productive.
Its more useful to catogorize things without making judgements on them For example - Nudity, frank discusions of a sexual nature, profanity - are all Mature area only content. Its easy to list things in fairly general terms. To still give LL latitude to decide. Profiles, venues and groups need to be allowed to be marked Mature content like classifed ads. ********* I agree this is all a clean up becuase of media attention on Second Life and the desire to attract business's , etc. I dont agree it will necesarily stop at just a "white wash". |

I dont agree it will necesarily stop at just a "white wash". It may, or it may not. But many of us are arguing points based on fears as to where SL is headed rather than reality. I have never once been told by any Linden how to act or think or express myself. And they are getting less and less involved all the time. I think the only people who have to worry are those that need to promote their now frowned upon sex stuff for some sort of profit. The rest of us are fine, no matter how obscene we are. _____________________

Ok. Then let's start with some case law. In Miller v. California, an appeal to have a prior conviction for mail order advertising of sexually explicit material overturned, the court essentially had to review every significant piece of existing law on the subject of obscenity, whether case or statute, and ultimately decided to deny the appeal. It speaks alot about things already discussed in these various threads, but seems to give the legal muster some are after, albeit in a US context.
By the way, is "rule by mob opinion" all that different than "the average person, applying contemporary community standards (not national standards, as some prior tests required), must find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest"? Just curious. What we need is actual written law here, not rule by mob opinion. |

Wow all of this for such a simple thing. I think that some in SL have banged their prim brains out!
1. You cannot have any obscene stuff in your profile, such as a three-letter word for male fluids. 2. Group names/titles are a publically viewable part of your profile. C. Therefore, groups with obscene names and/or titles are disallowed. Really, is it that hard to understand now? If you need LL to baby you and define every single occurrence of an obscene word or title, YOU HAVE FAILED. |

I think Linden Labs can do two things here if clarification really starts to become an issue.
1) They can set up a system much like the registration process for a lot of websites when you pick a screen name. The database has a list of key words or letter/number combinations it knows are unacceptable. If you enter these obscene words in a profile or group name, you will get a message that it is unacceptable; please try again. 2) They can allow people to put whatever they want in their profiles or group titles provided that they check a mature setting on them. If other people do not have this mature setting checked also, they cannot see the mature content. (This system would need tweaking because many people complain about the search/mature system not working.) Maybe these changes could cut down on all the abuse reports. P.S. To be fair to Linden Labs, at least they warn somehow before just banning people, or so I've noticed in recent cases. |

Oh no..don't want that. No one in SL seems to use protection - so sometimes it could happen by accident. 0.o |
