Because I am a very forgetful person, and I often rely on my archives to look back and reflect upon. I have found them very useful from time to time in case I forgot to write something important down, there was a backup and all I have to do is look up the convo.

I log everything as well. I consider it good business practice, since I might be called on something I said (or didn't). It has only come up once so far (with noobs that don't pay attention), and it makes life a little easier when you can back up your words with logs.

Julien,
Walker has given you the best advice. Just tp somewhere else. No bug can follow you in a tp. It's that simple. Once you are gone, one of several things will happen: [1] The bug, with no target, will self-delete or [2] if it is a poorly made one, it will sit there trying to find you again until the land it is on auto-returns it to the owner, or [3] if auto-return isn't turned on, it will just sit there until it gives up. I haven't heard of any so poorly made that they continue to scan for their target forver (such a massive lag, is the mark of a script kiddie).

No bug can "attach" itself to you unless you allow it. Assuming that you didn't get a blue drop down saying that some object wanted to attach itself to you (and if you aren't expecting this... the correct answer is always NO), then said bug is merely following somewhere within chat range.

As for the several questions that asked why would someone do this? No reason. Some twits do it just for giggles to random targets. I use listeners on many different channels, and i've "heard" these fools issue their bug commands then tp out. Why? Who knows. Why do people eavesdrop in RL? That's a question best asked of a psychologist. Within the context of SL... I would say they just do, because they can.

This is good advice, but incomplete. CIA sell a device called a Trojan Horse, which is a script that you put in an item. When the victim wears or uses the item, it relays all conversations back to the Horse owner. I work as a PI in SL, so have some knowlege of bugging (and bug prevention). I've never used a TH, because of the difficulties in getting a target to wear something when they don't know you, and also because CIA stuff tends to be expensive and the one item I did but from them didn't function as advertised. I also got no response to my queries from the owner.

So...if you do think someone is bugging you, look inside any items they gave you for a sript called "gift". This is the Trojan Horse. There is also a similar product called GPS, which sends the host's map location back to the owner. This uses a script called "gifts".

Most bugs these days can be difficult to detect if you aren't the land owner. When i do bug scans for people, i often drill right down into the wire frame image to try and identify anomalous prims.

Hope this is helpful.

There is absolutely no reason anyone needs any of these bugs.

Period.

If I read my "archives" the only person I would hate more than I do already, is myself.

Your opinion Colette. Period

People ply all sorts of trades in SL...from whoring to building. Why shouldn't a PI be able to do his work too.

Oh I don't know, because its against the Community Standards to bug people?

Thats not my opinion. Until Daniel L (who I heard is no longer with LL) dismantles the Community Standards, its against the rules to remotely record people's conversations.

My opinion would come in with the statement that its far more honest to go "whoring" than it is to spy on people.

Some people need someone looking over their shoulder.

Probably just as many that need to be looking over someone's shoulder.

I was bugged by this vicious device the psychotron.. apparently it is used remotely by a tower that can be rezzed on any land and can write text all over a persons screen wherever they tp..i did report this to the lindens as I found out who had done it.. this thing sent offline messages to my email account to and luckily there it showed the owner, but as yet no action has been taken. this was done by someone who was annoed that i didnt want to buy scripting tools and bots.

I don't buy it.

As long as the person is adult and mentally competent they should be allowed to make their own choices.

I doubt her mental competency.

I doubt my own for making her my wife.

Someone cheating on you online doesn't mean they should be spied on.

I've been cheated on In Real Life, I still don't advocate spying on those I am involved with.

I never did literally spy on her, I always do archives as a personal thing, and she knew that they existed, as she used them on occasion as well. I had suspected her of cheating on me, but never did pry for proof. Thing came to a head last month and she moved back home with her mother. About a week ago, I went looking in the SL archives for a conversation I had woth someone, to refresh my memory, and stumbled across hers as well, and well, I am no saint, so I went and had a peek to see what kind of things she had been up to while I was at work, sleeping, ect. What I found had me to the point I try never to get to, for I ended up drinking until I passed out.

Your personal situation is very unfortunate. I just don't see why it justifies spying on people.

As you said you didn't even spy intentionally. Would you advocate spying on people intentionally?

If there is no trust, then there is no reason to be with that person in the first place, so... Yes, I would say that you have a valid point in this matter and that I agree with you.
