UpdateThe naming poll is long over and the results are in. The winner is "Satori"! See the poll and results here: /327/5e/217094/1.htmlSatori is a Japanese Buddhist term for deep and lasting enlightenment. QuestionWhat should we do to "officialize" and publicize this name? The two things I remember from previous discussions are (1) have Carl add the name to the NCI world map, and (2) have Oryx or Mari add it to the history wiki with an explanation of its origin. Any other suggestions?

I think those two are a good start. The only thing I can think of after that is to petition LL but that should come awhile after the first two are in place.

Satori? The word doesn't fit as a name of a continent.

From: Rebecca Proudhon Satori? The word doesn't fit as a name of a continent. Well, it could have been worse. At least we engaged in a (small) democratic process, with nominations and votes and everything. If continents were named just by two guys sitting around smoking dope, then the original continent would have been named Steve instead of .... oh damn ... I can never remember the continents' names!!!! Well anywho, it was even a narrow escape this time, because "Steve" was on the short list. I tell YOU! Narrow escape. Imagine, if it had been named Steve then every Steve in SL would have been hiking around it planting flags claiming every hillock. There would have been tremendous competition among them to buy sims there. Chaos! (Oh, no, he already has his land, Melonhall is it?) I, for one, welcome this new democratic process of naming continents! Now we have a very pleasantly named continent, named .... ummmm .... well, one whose name has connotations of happiness and contentment, to whit ... errrrr .... what was it? Pie? was that it? yeah. the continent of Pie.

From: Rebecca Proudhon Satori? The word doesn't fit as a name of a continent. It's better (to my western ears) then Peogeot. Of course, even though this is a global community, we can name it Satori while other cultures name it something I can't even type on my keyboard. I think the map idea is the way to go. There are no more definitive maps in SL than NCI's that I have seen.

Needs a bigger poll with more continent-y sounding names, posted as a blog entry or a poll directly into the second-life viewer (it can do that now! I saw one!) so more people actually vote.

I suppose if any of us were Lindens, we would have been able to get the official LL name for the continent long ago, and not have to bother trying to name it ourselves. As for more continent-y sounding names, the first thread in this series was up for weeks allowing people to suggest and support names. The ones that received the most support were the ones used in the poll. There was plenty of time for people to propose and lobby for names the names they liked. I'm sorry some of you guys missed out on that.

/me figures that about the time the Forums-chosen name is circulated... whatever name the Lindens used for it internally will surface.

Check the original thread: /327/c5/213526/1.htmlFrom: Ava Glasgow And then LL will finally tell us what the REAL name is, negating all our work, but hey, at least we'll have a name for it! Pushing LL to release its true name has been our evil plan all along! (Of course, now that I've publicly acknowledged that, it will never happen. )

Well, I kind of like the name 'Caldwell Pointe', so that's what I'll be calling it lol Maybe if LL ever makes a map that allows you to zoom out and see the continents, then continent names will be relevant.

From: Ava Glasgow Update The naming poll is long over and the results are in. The winner is "Satori"! While I think that Satori is a very nice name, has anyone asked the Lindens if they have assigned a name for the continent? I was planning to before my next update on my map, but I've been quite busy in world with NCI stuff lately.

I was planning to before my next update on my map, but I've been quite busy in world with NCI stuff lately. Hi Carl! Back on the July 6th blog post announcing Corsica and acknowledging the official status of the Nautilus name, many people posted comments asking about continent #4's name. http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/07/06/new-mainland-continent-on-the-way/In comment #139, Jack Linden says: "Several of you have asked about the names of the other continents; I’ll see if I can rustle up a grid map with those on for you. In the meantime I have put up a map of the new Corsica region in the foyer of the office build on Linden Estate Services, so you can see how that will look." So at least one Linden was made aware of our desire for official continent names, but I've never heard anything about it since. I suppose it would be worthwhile for someone to check the Linden Estate Services foyer to see if a map has shown up there. Any volunteers? (I can't go inworld for several hours at least.)

I would check, but I can't right now, not that I need to. I'm pretty sure it says the continent is named Boomerangia.

From: Ava Glasgow You can't see the continents when you zoom all the way out? No, after a certain zoom level the and disapears, and all I can see are the little icons for events and telehubs. Isn't it that way for everyone? Or just me? :\

Or just me? :\ For me, private islands and estates disappear after a certain zoom level, but the mainland continents (with which we are concerned as far as naming goes) are still visible. You do have to turn off all the icons, though, or else they will cover up the land. Also, I get quite a bit of lag in map rendering. I usually have to leave it open for a while before some parts fill in.

Far as I'm concerned, the unofficial poll is good enough. I'm callin' it Satori. Whatevah. Good nuff, the few that cared have spoken. Doesn't matter what anyone else called it unless there's more press for whatever that name is. Then it will kinda be both. Or nothing again. Or it will get some awful nick which is also good with me.

I'm disappointed my submission didn't win but this could go on forever. The poll was there, it was bumped at least once. More people had the option to vote but the ones that did made their choice. I think that's fair enough. I may just go buy some land in Satori.

Sorry for dragging this thread back up . If you go to Jack Linden's office you'll see a map of the grid (I put the name of a sim on it behind the name): "Old Mainland" (Ahern) "Korean Continent" (Meari) "Japanese Continent" (Excalibur) and then Nautillus and Corsica.

"Korean Continent" and "Japanese Continent" might be the official names, but... those seem more like working titles from when the places were made. With the former comprised of Australian names too, I don't see the first name making much sense any more. And I'd think anything called the Japanese Continent would not make sense unless that's where the Japanese users were. Otherwise it would be really, really misleading - if a new user saw that map, what would they expect? Especially a Korean or Japanese person. I think we are pretty much stuck with vagueness, or whatever the users *actually* getting around to calling those places. Edit: good find though!
