Why do some regions ban flying?

It's personal choice. I don't think anyone that owns land has to give a detailed explanation for the reasons they do what they do. If someone doesn't want to allow flying, so be it.

Well, here's hoping that SL realizes this and clears out the bypass. Then again, with as slow as they are to getting around to fixing all this other stuff, I woudln't expect it any time soon.

Before I found the bypass I used a scripted solution. If they bypassed the bypass I could easily add my scripted solution to my Flight Feather, the most popular flight aid in SL.

But they're more likely to just remove "No Fly" along with things like "No Landmark" that are equally ineffective and pointless.

We dont fly on Etopia because we are educational sims dedicated to modeling a sustainable community and a we want to emphasize walking as a means of transportation that does not increase your carbon footprint. It also fosters interaction with other folks, which is another part of our missions - creating a real community of residents and friends.

Slowing things down, making people think, allowing them to walk past our exhibits and information, as well as encouraging actually stopping and chatting with others is a crucial part of our goal. It has been well thought through and most folks who visit or live with us like it.

Since it's not practical to type while walking in SL, I assume you're using Voice, but using Voice adds to the network and computational load of the SL client and the Vivox servers, thus increasing the actual carbon footprint of the visitor.

Folks on etopia are free to use voice if they like but I find that most type. I dont encounter too many people using voice there and i dont use it. We just walk and then stop to chat or type...we did an entire two sim tour yesterday for 45 min via typing and it worked just fine.

Our goal is to educate and encourage folks and to model things they can do in the RL to increase sustainability and foster community. We find that folks who fly dont tend to do it in flocks, so it kinda defeats our goal of more interaction.

Just as an aside, we are also a part of the Green Islands project that works to minimize the RL energy use of sims in SL. While it isnt all a perfect solution, modeling walking as form of transportation is important to us and if folks walk in RL more I think that would offset any additional energy used by their use of voice in SL.

Fair enough. And if you've got a reasonable posted reason why people shouldn't fly I wouldn't fly whether you had fly disabled or not. I'm talking about people who put up restrictions just because they can... which is really the usual case I run into.

You do raise a good point about posting why tho...we dont post it tho we have a notecard explaining it...maybe i should add a notecard giver with the info so people dont think we are just being contrary lol

I have wings, so I fly. Since my wings are part of me, they are as low carbon as walking, just easier, and much more fun!

So should there be workarounds to all land owners tools? Why not workaround a no rez zone? Or no push? Or no damage? Workaround autoreturn while you are at it. What's the point of having controls if people are just going to "workaround" them? Why bother to buy land at all if everyone is going to circumvent your controls. Just make SL one big commune where no one owns anything.

Is it that important as to why an owner has a no fly setting? Can't you just respect it, and either walk or leave? Wouldn't you want people to respect whatever controls you have set up on your land?

Only the stupid ones. And, yes, that includes the idiot token "no entry" ban lines that don't provide 10% of the protection that landowners seem to think they do. As a landowner I would give up all of them in exchange for any kind of working privacy tools.

Would I want it? Possibly. Would I expect it? That depends on the restrictions. I was even reluctant to turn on autoreturn... and I only turned that on AFTER it became clear that I needed to. If everyone was as parsimonious about using access controls as I, there would be no need for workarounds.

No, all of them. Including the ones I use: I'll even give up no-push and autoreturn and even have damage enabled everywhere... if that would get me effective privacy.

Most of the time I do not even notice if no fly is on or not as most have it on. And I have Admin on all the time. One of the first things I do when I log in (log in: 1: turn on "look at", 2: rebake; 3: Admin (somewhere in there is meowing at Mistress indicating that I'm online).

One of the things turning on Admin does is allow you to offer TP's. I got tired of people asking for TP's who had made themselves invisible. With admin on I can send TP to "invisible" people. And look at music stream. And fly in no fly.

So I'm back to: most of the time I do not even realize I'm in a no fly zone.

Yes....this - especially when you don't have a lot of time to be iw.

I seem to have Admin on permanently by default whenever I switch on.
