Why do some regions ban flying?

I have lived in an Arabian Nights sim where the owned switched off flying, and the covenant said we should not rez things like Black Hawk helicopters to get around on, and he provided us all with magic flying carpets, in line with the theme of the sim. Fair enough.
However, I have been to many sims where there is no theme, a building free-for-all, and where flying is also switched off, and I could never understand the reasoning for this.
Anyone know any compelling reasons why a sim owner would want to switch off flying in a non-themed sim?

Only reason I can think of is that they want a touch of RL realism to the sim.
Flying doesn't work in RL (at least last time I checked, I haven't been there for a while) and some sim owners might think that it clashes with the feeling of reality if it's allowed in SL.

Usually it means I turn on my heel and leave. I can understand it in Numbakulla, but almost anywhere else it's just a drag.

Of course you can fly in rl! Pep (It's the landings that tend to be the problem! )

A neighbour once invited me over to her place, which was on the far opposite corner of the island. She started laughing after a minute when she realised I was actually walking over to her place. I thought it was a good opportunity to get a picture of what had happened to the rest of the island since my last foray , which had beeen quite some time before that.
Besides, I think flying avs look dumb unless there is a great distance to cover. Low flying avs are hazardous into the bargain. I guess a lot of owners ban flying out of similar sentiments. It isn't rocket science.

Because they have builds in the sky they do not want the average joe visiting all the time.

As for no-fly sims, I just turn on View Admin and fly anyway. They got a problem with it, they can eject me because I'm not walking all the way to wherever it is I was going.

From: pinky Lednev You can fly in no fly zones crtl + v ! What is the point of an owner switching off flying in his sim, if it can simply be switched back on again by any avatar via the viewer?? How many other settings can be bypassed this way? Rezzing objects? Running scripts? etc. Vi

There are number of skybox rentals around me and it preserves the privacy. Jackie. PS - I asked my Landlady if she had an issue with my overriding the no-fly and she told me to Ctrl-Alt-V my little heart out. J

What's the point of it? Sense of control borne out of ignorance. Either the owner's or the users who don't know how to bypass it. As for what else View Admin can bypass, I use it quite often to see the music URLs from clubs and such. I prefer to listen to those streams in Winamp which provides better sound for me than SL's mp3 client.

I mostly walk everywhere I go except when I'm in some huge mall and there is no transporter to take me to the department I need to go. Some places can be so laggy, flying is the only way to at least get some movement.
Also when I go to a live event and the lm doesn't take me exactly where the performance is being held, I either fly or tp via map where the majority of the green dots are.

I'm a walker, , a don't fly, withut aircraft, as a rule. I don't TP if I am staying withing a sim or two, I walk. About the only times I fly is if the landing point is badly placed and not near where I thought it would be , I maight fly up to get my bearings, but I will then walk to my destination, or if a shop is on a little island patch, and there is no bridge to walk across, I will use fly to "hop" across. Being marked "No fly" is not cause for me to just leave an area, if there is something of interest I'll saty. It's not a big deal to me.

Another vote for walking...I found a road by accident near one of my properties and have spent hours just walking along it and dropping in to clubs and shops along the way. Only fly to get around obstacles or to get my bearings (as in, find my properties when I get lost . Jackie

Except for very rare exceptions, if the live event teleport lands me in a postion where I cannot even see where the singer might be, I leave. Too many live acts playing at the same time. Too many I haven't heard yet. Isn't the live performers fault, and I am not so much "boycotting" them as the music venue (which is why I do, rarely, walk/fly across the sim to hear the live musician; and then never return to that venue again).

Oh, and I tend to walk also (unless I know exactly what I want in a store, then I fly to it). Though I like doing acrobatic jumping. Leaping around at great heights. Or walking up walls/steep hills (though that ability has lessoned after physics changes).
I'm reading that "Making of Second Life" book. LL put in flying because they didn't want to take the time to create climbing animation. According to that book. heh

Different places have different reasons, as has been mentioned.
Role Play/Themed - many of these sims do not allow flying because it breaks the theme. Avilion Grove is an example where you are asked to not only wear themed clothing, but not to fly unless you are a character with wings, such as fairy or dragon.
Games, puzzles, special displays - in these, the creator wants you to experience things in a certain order, not just fly around the sim. Osprey mentioned Numbakulla - which is a perfect example. You are supposed to solve the puzzles in order to progress to the next area.
Hiding something - as mentioned, anyone not falling into the two above categories might be hiding things in the sky.
Traffic - some retail locations force no fly as a way to slow people down so they look at more stores instead of flying to the one they want. It also helps keep those shoppers on the sim longer, adding to traffic count.

I fly.
I don't like walking, it takes too long. I don't like running, it looks dumb. I fly. High and fast, or low and slow if I'm in a store.
I like to get around fast.

I fly everywhere all the time. I walk enough in RL - I love flying in SL.
The 'View Admin Options' will also give you the 'Teleport' button on someone's profile if they are not on your Friends list and have checked the 'allow only my friends to see me online' option.

The trouble with flying is you can land inside a building if it has not rezzed.

I turn off flying during hand to hand combat events simply because I am sick of people trying to jump and not doing it right, and then getting caught in a hover and bumping all over the place like a pin ball.

They're jerks. Just turn on Admin Options in the Advanced menu and ignore the no-fly zone. To keep your code running in np-script zones, there's a simple workaround you can do in the scripts.

It sounds like the same argument over why microwaves are better than stoves because the microwave cooks things faster.
Honestly, who cares? If someone turns it off, they turn it off. The DCWF sim has it off for quite a few reasons, mainly because we dont want people flying into the wrestling ring, flying backstage, flying onto the stage, so on. If a live venue has no fly turned on, it's a very good precaution considering how many jackasses their are in SL that would have no problem flying right up onto the stage.
Really, I can't believe people are even bothered by this. To those of you that just leave if you don't like it, that's probably the best option. But really, a sim is 256m wide...that isn't really that far to walk, you could cross a sim in less than a minute. Turn on run and do it in half the time. Really isn't that difficult.

From: Eric Stuart Really, I can't believe people are even bothered by this. Then I guess you've learned something. I don't know about your particular sim, but there's parcels all over the grid with flying disabled for no discernible reason, including 512m2 parcels with zero prims rezzed. People just do it because they can. If you've got a notice or something saying "flying is disabled because X, Y, and Z" then I'll probably honor it, but if I'm in a parcel that has flying disabled and I can't see any reason beyond "the owner is a jackass" I have no compunction about bypassing the restriction.
