Might be thinking of the "Fat Packs." Not that I've been skin shopping recently but most of the single skins I've seen are in the 1200L - 2000L range with 1500L seemingly the most common price.

I believe there was actually an official class in "Sex in SL" at one point, which had to be closed down due to drama.

That still sounds a bit high...1000-1200L is what I see most often. And I shop. A lot.

Personally, I don't see how professional girls can make a living here when there is so much competition from enthusiastic amateurs.

But if you want to give it a go, there is no need to join a group or get a job or spend any money. Just get some nice hair and a short skirt. Put a sign over your head saying "Escort" and put your rates in you profile and wander around anywhere that seems busy.

That is great you're able to do that, but for every one that is providing a genuine
service there is 1000 out there that it is about something else and have been burned,
bitter, feel used and only pretend they like sex but actually hate it and expect to
get paid for it.
I think low pay for certain sexual activities when the woman or man has to risk their
personal safety or it feels exploitative and violating is wrong.

My first job in SL was a stripper job, it was with a previous av i used. I was only a couple of weeks old and had crappy freebie skin and very few clothes, but i was hired because they liked my personality and the fact i loved to interact with people. I managed to recive good tips too lol. Well my first job with this av was also as a stripper, i worked at the same club for well over a year with a only a couple a cheap skins and a few nice outfits, again my personality played a big role in this, i was a hard worker and put big hours in when nobody else was willing to, i managed to get promoted to lead dancer. There are, IMO, three reasons why one might choose the pro.

Don't buy a shape right off. Once you find a skin you like, make your own shape. Try all the shapes in Library (in your inventory) for ideas, and then start playing with the sliders and see if you can make a sexy you. Later, you may find a shape you want to buy, esp one made for a specific skin. But for starters, if you're at all talented, you can learn to make your own.

What you do with your av counts far more than how much you spend on it. If you have an eye for what attracts men, you'll get plenty of interest.

However, translating that interest into cash is another matter. As mentioned above, imagination and communication are your most important assets.

Meanwhile, you'll want to learn a number of things like how to use sex apparatus in SL (like menu beds, poseballs, and add-on genitals), as well as how people just go about sex in SL.
