OK...so there are new avs in the Library. Big deal.

Are there any of these new avs on the REGISTRATION page? I haven't checked, but considering that all the noobs I saw on OI yesterday were the Same Old Noobs, I would say not.

By the time your average newbie searches thru the Library and thinks to try on some of the avs in there, he or she has also probably bought his or her first good skins, hair and clothes.

Yes, putting them in the Library isn't much good if nobody knows they are there. However, I'm pretty sure newbies do look in the library for things, I know I see enough torches, popguns, and whatever else laying all over the grid. (I even have a pic of a newbie with every item from the library attached to various parts of their body, rather hilarious.)

I just checked and no, they are not featured on the "Select an Avatar" page of official Second Life registration. A lot of newbies still pick the old-school generic male (white shirt) and female (purple blouse) avatars, even though we've had 10 better alternatives on that page for the past year-and-a-half at least.

I believe I read on either New World Notes ot Massively.com that that was the next step with 'em.

I made an alt a few months ago purely to check out the new OI/HI.
I made it male just to check out how the other half lives.

The poor thing languished in OI for weeks as I found the process of going through everything to be very tedious. He happened to be born at a time of great lag.
He eventually escaped into his new 'Home' in Waterhead. :(
Up to yesterday, he looked like a demented dork and walked like a duck with a disability.
Now with the new Library, he looks like 'boy next door' and he has options that won't make others laugh at him.
Cheered by this new image, I decided to do something about the walk.
Putting a simple non-laggy AO script into one of his (library) shoes wasn't a big issue for a techie.
Finding a decent walk animation was depressing.
All of the immediately available free walks are awful.
"Differently-abled" would be the PC reaction to them. "Complete spastic" would be the non-PC reaction.
As a quick fix I took him to Abranimations and bought him a walk that was almost spastic-free.

I have a theory that the people who design male walk animations are either
a) women who hate men, or
b) men who actually walk like that

I have to say that I am slightly impressed with what I see offered for the men with this new batch of avatars. Its especially nice to see some good shoes and boots now. Shopping for mens clothing is challenge enough but as a newbie, not often what the men want to do right away. But whats with the giant stain on the mens Renegade shirt?

Hopefully the OI tutorials explain you have to drag the folder onto your avatar to wear an outfit from the library. It took me a minute to figure it out, I'm used to right-clicking the folder :P

I'm reading now there is a bit of an uproar by the creators that participated in creating these avatars for LL. Seems LL removed/altered/mixed-n-matched pieces, changed shapes, and in one case it seems, only offered one of eight avatars given to them. The creator is threatening to offer the other 7 herself if LL doesn't. Here's a link:

Woah... That does seem to be a bit messed up. (>_<;)

I'm not really using any of the shapes or skins form the collection since I already have two that I consider to be "me". But, since they gave the creator credit for the avatar as a whole, things should have been left alone. (=_=)

But, on the other hand, I do the same thing. My small shape was a freebie, but I didn't like the face and a few details in the body... So I changed them. My skins are Eloh's "Re", but the default shaders didn't fit either body type I use and I wanted an oddly placed beauty mark... So I changed them. I believe I was given permission to do so since the content was delivered to me with *gasp* Full-Permissions. \(0o0)/

So, for LL to make changes and adjustment to content that was given to them before putting it out for use is kinda understandable. I'm sure nobody signed a contract here. In the end, the content creators still get the extra attention. (^_^)

And, what would it matter if one creator offers their contributed content as freebies on the side? It's something they could have done in the first place. It's just that having them included in the SL Library makes for much more visibility than anyone would ever have by any other means. (=_=)y

**EDIT**

And BTW... Since I fell in love with the Gamer Female Beanie but I'm not willing to drop my nekomimi... I went as far as editing it myself with hems that wrap around holes for the ears to pass through... It's just another fine example of me never leaving anything well enough alone. (^_^)y

Well, I agree, to a point. It really depends on what agreement LL had with the creators, paid or not.

Also everyone keeps saying 'donated content', but to be clear, these creators were paid for it by LL. It wasn't 100% out of the goodness of their hearts alone, although I was still very kind of them to do it.

I also modded one of the new skins

Just after I found out about the new AVs, I went through them and found a skin I liked (although I changed the tint on it).;)

I'm glad to finaly ditch the default skin from the old starter, finding a good male AV skin is almost impossible.;)

All I need now to finaly complete my "Matrix" themed AV is just a few more animations for the AO.

But you will still see me as the tiny robot most of the time, is currently my primary AV right now.:D

About a day or so ago in Mentor group chat someone had said something like "I'm seeing 4 well dressed noobies in OI, does anyone know what this means?" (o.o)

So, last night I had to take a look for myself. I saw a Gamer Girl, Elf, Girl Next Door, Cardboard Box, and a few others. I haven't looked at the signup page, but, I'm guessing all the new avatars are there now. In a way, Orientation Island has just become a much more beautiful place now. (^_^)

The people I chatted with in the new library avatars did seem much less frustrated, less fixated on "how do I not look like s**t?", and hopefully more likely to stick around and put up with the rest of the bugs. The elf even felt a bit of pride in "his" avatar since he is a fan of medieval fantasy. (^_^)

I'm still wearing some of the clothing myself, especially my modded Gamer Girl beanie that I constantly bring up over and over again. In time, the oldbies will start to groan at seeing 'just another noobie avatar' from the collection. And I'm sure people that give noobie make-overs may be a bit less busy. But what I've seen so far helps my confidence in noobie retention a bit. (^_^)y

Speaking of the cardboard box robot av...

I found a prim from one of those sitting around loose on OI6 the other day. I didn't think that was possible, since build's disabled there, and even editing of attached prims or HUDs. But someone, or an SL glitch, managed the feat...

Info Regarding The new Default LL Library Avatars
June 10th, 2008 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments ยป

Hi Everyone,

So I was in a panic earlier.

I have received some clarification about the default avatars from Linden Labs. There will be some kind of official announcement later in the week. There are apparently 39 total new avatars which will be rotated in and out in groups of 12. I am not certain why and will not speculate as to why they put these into the library without at least some small note explaining what was coming. I adore Second Life, and can even handle things being buggy, (Not to the scale that they have been lately, but that is a different blog entry :P) but my big big big complaint with LL is they are not good at all about communication.

So the big uprorar (And to defend myslef, I was not the only one freaked out) is based on only a few of the many options for new Library Avatars. There will be many more options aparently than the ones that reside in the library now, including Male and Female Elf avatars by Yours Truly, as well as 6 others that I created.

I will refrain from throwing fits until the official announcement is made later in the week. (Perhaps a little sleep at some point is in order).

That was posted on the 10th, and we appear to have run out of "week"

Well, my inventory was well and truly messed up earlier (non-system folders at the top, unmoveable and undelete-able, etc) so it might be that they're working on it now.

Or, of course, it could just be the usual borkage.

Waaaaiiiit a minnit, Sling...

These avatars are in the Library, right?
The Library that is supposed to have unchanging content?
The Library that we never have to copy things from because they will always be there?
That Library?

And, the Lindens are proposing to ROTATE them?

So...I go to put on my cool Robot Box av to go over to Madhu's cafe, and I can't find it.
But...but, I just wore that thing last week!
I file a Support Ticket with LL...

"We're sorry, but we took away your favorite avatar. This week, try the new Barack Obama av...we're sure you'll enjoy it! [RESOLVED]"

Obviously, LL has been taking overdoses of their Stupid Pills again.

You'll still be able to go to Come As You Are parties.
You might have to skip a few Come As You Were parties.

But then, since the stuff is full perms (that I've checked), copies of the favourite stuff could be made I suppose.

/me giggles at silly Lindal. (=_=)

Anything that you use or wear from the library automatically gets copied to your own inventory folders. So if it ever gets removed from the library, you still have your own keeper on hand. (^_^)y

A Linden week is approximately 2.5 weeks in human time. :P

Except for those of us who tidy up after ourselves and don't leave extra copies sitting around...

Didn't I tell you to clean up your room?!
