Maybe you prefer "Hidden" or "Pilfered?"

Hmmm.... "pilfered" might fit Jig a bit more.

I was referring to nics for Seven "Lost" and "Golden." She seems not to like the allusion to "Lost Treasure" as it could have a less likable connotation.

Make an alt right away, then make up your mind later which one should be most prominent.

I don't even know what was the big idea from LL to let peoples use anything else than letters in avatar names...

I really like memorable names :) This was my third alt, but after I got it I hardly ever use the previous ones.

Actually there is a way to change your last or 1st name. But its not easy. And it has been done before. You just really need to be in the good with the right Lindens. ;)

I think since you are not too old, actually young in SL terms, you may be best off creating another account with your more carefully chosen name.

The only difficulty is transferring No Transfer items over. For one of your genre, it's probably no big deal to repurchase anew. Or, maybe even with a genuine appeal to the creator/s, they might even pass on a new copy to the new av. I know I would if I was convinced enough. For the loss of a few things, well, say la vee. (?)

If you have created things, Second Inventory (multi) can back up those Full Perm items, and on restore to the new account, will be in the new accounts name as creator. (I do believe).

If you are likely to stay in SL for any extended time, doing this earlier would be better than later. And you will be happier with the name.

1. Create entries on Urban Dictionary using your name as an obscene term.
2. Get some friends and alts to AR your name, linking to said site.
3. Wait for LL to force you to change your name.

But you didn't say HOW!

All right, you can be coy, but I'll be explicit.

You CAN change your name. Here are the ways.

1. Get someone (or several someones) to AR you for having an indecent name. This is going to be very difficult to sell; "kurt7D8" just doesn't have that raunchy sleazy ring to it.
The other problem is that the Lindens get to pick your new name for you.

2. Get a job with Linden Lab. Then you can change your name to "Sellout Linden". Or have a one-letter name so that nobody can find you using Search. I hear "Z" is open.

3. Buy a corporate name. This requires that you actually have a company in RL, and you pay a $500US setup fee and a $500 annual service fee. (Why you need "service" on a name is left as an exercise for the inquiring reader). Details of this program can be found at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Custom_Name_Program

kurt, you can see, I think, that none of these avenues hold out a lot of hope to the average resident. I recommend you learn to live with it, or make an alt.

I believe some BDSM submissives intentionally use lower case first names.

Mostly I think people just don't pay as much attention to the registration process as they should.

The latter is what happened to me when I created this account late one night -- and now many people seem to assume the former about me!

Yes, they certainly are a serious business! I found out that I can go to the sign-up feature, momentarily leave out the identifying information, and type in my first name over and over, as I view random lists of last names. What's the rush?? :-) I can go through hundreds of names in one sitting! It's gotta be "just right!

Digression. "Darkly Cute?" Hmm. Are you single?? I'm looking for a girlfriend in RL or SL but not both, unless it's the same person!!

Actually, it's not a bad idea! Watcha got to lose? L$20,000 when I'm ready with a name (which I'm not!!) to a Linden who responds. One half paid up front, the other after the change.
Please check contract for legality and a work-around, if necessary. I don't want drama!

I do plan to stay in SL for life, i.e., until I die in RL. I'm young in SL and old in RL :-) Thank you for the advice and good ideas, some of which I will use. Meanwhile, I have found the following, which will be useful:

Knowledge Base
Second Life Info > Inventory Management >
Next-owner permissions FAQ

Right now, I think the best thing to do is to create an ALT IF I can find the perfect name, "perfect" in this case is a plain name that sounds "just right." Then if the plan to transfer property, house, and av doesn't work (I already spent L$19,000 on a house and I am paying for 1/8 Region per month, all of which have been carefully selected). If it doesn't work, no harm, no foul. This way I have a lot of wiggle room to play with it and see if I can really do the transfer I want . . .

Lower Case, BDSM, Name Change, and Gorean Culture

Thanks for the heads up on the possible meaning of lower case. I am not BDSM, nor am I BDSM curious. However, I am interested in BDSM as a phenomenon, just like I'm interesting in everything else in the world! I find many ideas fascinating about Gor culture, and it's a rich culture to explore. In fact, I read one of John Lange's (Gorean) novels: Assassins of Gor. Lange was a philosophy professor and, over a span of approximate two decades, wrote around 20 or so Gorean novels. So here you have an "artificial" psycho-social system within a virtual world -- wheels within wheels. It was a compelling read.

Any advice from anybody on how I might explore Gorean culture on SL? (Maybe I shouldn't change my name just yet!!)

BTW, re: not taking the registration process seriously, it's a little like that first tattoo! Lots of serious tattoo people, me being one, (full back piece, etc.), have that "first tattoo" to cover up.

if you want to know about Gor, the best place to go is the SL Gorean Forum at

http://goreanforums.net/

the people are friendly and helpful. You won't get much good information here in this forum.
