My name sucks! I have to keep it for LIFE? Is anyone really going to figure out that "7D8" is hexadecimal for "2008," my year of retirement in RL? And the lower case "k" in my first name, that was a bad decision really sticking in the craw of this 30 year English teacher. Since I've been on SL, I've realized that most people's names are perfectly natural and real. Mine isn't. A fake name on SL!

So is my ONLY alternative to create an ALT account? And if I do that, is there ANY way to transfer my property and inventory?

I think that the answer's going to be "no" to both questions :-(

You can create an ALT account. If you have not yet gathered too much on this account, you can transfer any land, L$ and inventory with transfer rights to that new account.

That is the only way, unfortunatly, to change your name.

Pretty much, yes.. the answer is no.

But your name isn't so bad, actually. It's a lot better than, say.. xxxsexxyxx Blingtard. If you really want to feel better about your name, stand around one of the several welcome areas! :p

Your only option, yes, is to create an alt, unless you want to shell out large corporation fundage for the ability to change your name.

Regarding your inventory, that depends on the permissions of the items you own. Those which are no-transfer, nope, sorry, your original avatar is stuck with them.

All is not lost even in that case, though. Deed your new property to a group you have created, and invite your original avatar to that group. Then anything your original avatar owns (besides clothes and attachments you're supposed to wear) can be rezzed on the property and you can freely use it.

Sorry to be responding with no answers to your questions, but I have wondered about these first names in lower case. I see tons of them around and always wonder why people choose not to capitalize their first name. It's very common for some reason, always been curious about it. Why DID you choose to set it up that way? And yeah, for the rest of it, it's significant only to you, so why not make it easy on the rest of us, although, if I were talking to you inworld, I"m sure I'd just call you kurt and ignore the 7D8, it's agonizingly cutesy, now that you define what it means. But yeah no one will ever know but you.

I believe some BDSM submissives intentionally use lower case first names.

Mostly I think people just don't pay as much attention to the registration process as they should.

That was me. I so focused on not creating a "jacked up" name that I didn't pay attention to the capitalization until after I was done.

Yeah - there ought to be a warning to first timers - "Be careful with your name choice, you'll have to live with it for years......"

I think a lot of people are just looking for a name that's not already in use so they can register for "this game", not thinking that they are choosing their given name in a virtual community.

Of course, alts are much smarter than this *grins*

You're name isn't bad.. really....

I wish I had of had a bit of imagination when I created tarina, which is basicly an alteration of my real name.. at the time, I thought it was good...
Now I want xxxSexyxxx Blingtard!

I like Tarina!

And kurt7D8's not so bad, either.

It's amazing how many of us seem not to like our own names. Trout Recreant hates his last name, after he looked it up and found it didn't have anything to do with recreation. I wasn't too happy with "Lindal" at first, but I've gotten used to it and wouldn't change now.

I've made alts now and then, just for the fun of putting together a humorous or pretty name...but that alone has never been enough to make me want to abandon all my No Transfer stuff and start over again.

That's interesting. Is it a way of indicating they are "less than" Doms, or is it a code to indicate their preference?

I shouldn't worry too much, sure it's not a name of the quality of mine but everyone should instantly figure out that 7D8 is hexadecimal for 2008, I mean how could they not do?

It is not the worst SL name. Does it matter if they know the year you retired or not? Try being called Bryanna half the time instead of Brynna.

If things transfer you can transfer them to your new name.

A bit of both, I think. It's also common in online D/s play and fiction to capitalise a Dominant's name, and any references to Him or Her. Then again, it's also pretty common for online names to be left without capitalisation.

If it helps, Kurt, I interpreted your name as implying that you were born in 1978, which I bet is somewhat later than the reality. Your name is a fountain of youth!

(and yeah, if you want to change it may as well crank up that new alt now ... there are great
notrans freebies available at Christmas to get him going!)

Perhaps the reason your name doesn't sound too jarring to the rest of us is that we are online in "internet culture" here, and spelling variances are as acceptable here, as they were several hundred years ago, say.

For example:

A KNYGHT ther was, and that a worthy man,
That fro the tyme that he first bigan
To riden out, he loved chivalrie,
Trouthe and honour, fredom and curteisie.

(Chaucer)

How much different is that, from standard English, as compared to this?

A KNI9Ht +h3R3 WAs, 4ND WH@T 4 gENTlEM4N,
whO, PhrOM Th3 mOM3N+ +H4T hE Ph1r5+ 8Eg4n
+0 ride 4b0u+ +3H w0rlD, loved ch1vAlRY,
Tru+h, h0NOUr, fr3Edom 4nd @Ll c0ur+E5Y.

Alright, perhaps that's an extreme example.

But rest assured, your name doesn't sound awful at all to most of the rest of us.

try having everyone call you "RALEK" for short instead of the patently obvious and much to be preferred "Ral".

What's in a name?
12-17-2009 11:46
I like OP's name.

From: Shakespeare's Juliet
What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.

I have a bad habit of making up nic names for people I have just met. I say 'bad habit' because some people are offended by it. I would probably call OP "7D" upon first meeting him. Knowing his background now it might be "08." The one time I met Seven inworld I was calling her "7," "Sev," and "Seven" not able to make up my mind.

People whov'e posted in this thread might end up with the fallowing...
Desmond Shang= Desi or Mondo
Kelli May=Kel
Brynna Bookmite=Bry or Ynna
Sebastian Joliat=Bast or Basti
Tarina Sewell=Tari or Ina

Treasure Ballinger=Treasure the couple of times I've spoken with her inworld and in the forums. I do have the urge to use "Golden" or "Lost" but don't because its too much of a stretch for others to be easily discerned to whom I'm referring.

SL names become even more dynamic in voice. Many people would pronounce the nic names I listed above in all different manors. I say "Reɪf" but many people call me "Ræfé."

Next time I see that play, I will call that question from the audience.

"Excuse me, Juliette...?"

To Kurt - it's not a bad name. Most people will call you Kurt anyway.
