They only form impressions if they're moving fast enough when they hit!

I suppose he would be, but then again he was broadminded (!) enough to give Plenty O'Toole the benefit of the doubt....

Was she before or after Holly Goodhead?

I wouldn't know, but millions would: since I couldn't remember if it was O'Toole or O'Tool, I'd Googled---and there are DOZENS of webpages devoted to the Bond-Girl Names.

According to one:
"Fandango.com – the nation’s leading movie ticketing destination – has conducted a survey on the Most Outrageous Character Names for a Bond Girl, and with 53 percent of votes, Pussy Galore from Goldfinger is the No. 1 campy Bond babe.

Spy hottie Octopussy gets 17 percent of votes, while 12 percent of 007 fans think Xenia Onatopp from Goldeneye had a cheesy moniker.

About 6 percent think Moonraker’s Dr. Holly Goodhead had the corniest name, and Plenty O’Toole from Diamonds Are Forever came in with 4 percent."

..............................

So SLers aren't the only people who enjoy, er, a Good Name....

Names definitely matter to me. If someone has numbers in their name, I'm not going to consider them as serious as other people, because either they're a newb (Yes, I'm newbist, I'm sorry. I don't mind em, but I don't like the ignorant type), or they don't care about their account, in my mind.

If their name is a play on words, or meant to mean something when put together, then I'll also not take them quite as seriously for business things. I mean sure, it's entertaining, but in RL you're not allowed to walk around with your nametag saying 'Slaveboy Leatherbutt' (They need that surname, yes?). If you're going to be doing serious business with an avatar, I feel it should look like you intend to, name included.

Beyond that, names aren't important. I don't care if your name is 50 letters long, as long as it sounds plausible.

Interesting thread.

Not only am I put off by AOL style and unsubtle suggestive names, but also by those titles everyone but me wears. Frankly they confuse me because they go above the name and I usually read them first.

As soon as I join any group I deactivate it. I don't want to go around as "V.I.P.," or "Owner" or "Grand Inquisitor" or even "Piethrower." (Sorry, Cartel folks). I am just Weston, or Wes. That's all. It's a fairly mundane name, but it's easy to read and type, and has been kind of an alter ego of mine (the real me) since about 3rd grade.

I do like the clever names I see, and I'm intrigued by gender ambiguous names - especially on non-human avatars. It changes the way I respond to the person and actually makes me pay more attention to every nuance of what they say.

There are some fantastic names in these forums as you all know. I don't think I've found any more creative in world.

I keep a little list of particularly noteworthy SL names that I encounter. It's a fairly small list - there are a lot of amusing or startling names around, but there are a few that IMO really stand out from the crowd for one reason or another.

I think my favourites on my little list are probably:

- Catfart Grayson (always makes me giggle - for some reason the surname sounds a little prim and proper to my ear, and the contrast between that and the forename never fail to amuse me - I find myself imagining a proper Caledonian gent called Catfart)

- Incoherendt Randt (I giggle every time I see that one, which really seems witty and appeals to my sense of humour hugely)

- SwallowedByA Python (goodness knows what they abbreviate that to for daily usage!)

There are a few on my list that are notable in the other direction for sheer grossness or bizarre unpleasantness, but I won't mention those here. :-7

/me doesn't get the naz talk (does it mean fried nose in some other language?)

past band incarnations and lyrical references, according to some sources, originating from Lord Buckley referring to Jesus (of Nazareth) as "the Naz". (and i can't believe that Mott slipped my mind... hope it was just some kind of temporary...)

Hi, I have noticed some very strange names, and a lot of "AOL" style names (by that I mean the ones with a lot of numbers)

Does someone's name help form your impression of them?

Or does the name not play a part at all?

For me, names do play a part in my impression of someone.
(positive and negative)

Name does in fact form first impressions for me as well.... Igriefyou Of course would raise flags... The women with sexy whatever.... impression... Imtosexy etc.. well you knida know why they here, right? Men same thing... Ivegotabig... etc etc...

Numbers in the name.. dont really bother me to much.. I just figure they really wanted the name that is before the numbers...

But yes, i do form first impressions of peoples names and I can tell how they view themselves.. also those titlers... what they say on them big time impression...

anyway...

Tarina Sewell.. blah... but... whatever.. Not many of us Sewell's left.. lol

Sorry *you* hate numbers in peoples' names, but that's your problem not mine. Your judgemental attitude just might prevent you from discovering a good friend, your loss.

88 keys on a piano, not that 87 people took the name before me. It's worked well as a brand for 9 years now, long before I came to SL and brought others with me.

(not sure what the "brought people with me to SL" has to do with it, I personally don't care who brings who to SL, and it has no bearing on my impression of their name)

I also do not get upset or bent out of shape if someone judges me by my name, or the clothes I chose, or the shoes I wear, or heck, even the fact I chose to not have a house in SL. That is their judgment call to make, and if they decide I am not worth their time... *shrug* oh well.

I think most of us are referring to this type of name....

jukebox12345
etc

however no offense, but with the extra X's and the numbers, to me it does tend to denote either a very young player (which there is nothing wrong with that) or someone who either did not care about the name, or was creating an alt for nefarious purposes and the name was a quickie.

That is my impression, (call it judgmental if you wish, after all, we ALL judge people even if we think we don't), and if it means I might lose a possible friend because their choice of name makes me feel like I am less likely to interact with them, then yeah it could be my loss, or maybe not.

*shrug*

Names do mean something to me and they usually imply what the attitude of the person behind the avatar is going to be. Fun, flirty, cute, dark, dangerous, idiotic, juvenile, sex-crazed, etc., etc. The tough ones to figure are the plain old "Robert Morigi" types.

I was eating a Snickers bar when it came to name picking and Snook sounded funny with it. Sometimes I regret my choice, sometimes I don't. I have no idea what it conveys to other people on first encounter except terminal silliness.

Stick with don't.

Your name has a great ring to it: kind of Dickensian with a dash of fun laid over a good rhythm.

Regardless of whether or not we like someone's name, it leaves an impression, for good or ill and it's just human nature. I prefer to "hear" a person speak first, although I may always lament the person's name. Names are revealing of a personality, and some contacts are best left as casual or business only.

"We only get one chance to make a first impression." - Somebody.

An avatar appearance may be bought off the shelf.
A name says something about the mind behind the avatar. It might not say a lot in the middle ground of ordinary names. At the extremes of 'good' and 'bad', it can say a lot.

I always respond well to an interesting name, particularly the witty ones.

Good conversation and behaviour can overcome the effects of an unfortunate name - but why start from downhill?

So Ian Fleming is undead then?
