Why do people always ignore Rebecca Ore when they talk about female SF writers? Ok. Who is Rebecca Ore? Ursula Le Guin I know. And Jeanette Winterson has done a few things ... So tell me. _____________________

Why do people always ignore Rebecca Ore when they talk about female SF writers? Well, notice that no one had talked about female SF writers as such; instead, someone had listed some highly regarded female writers that would probably be classified as 'mainstream', and someone else (me) had noted that two on the list HAD published some SF, and that these works might be know to the SF-loving denizens of the Forums. So, tell us about Rebecca Ore. I've heard of "Becoming Alien" but regret to say I haven't read it, or her other books. Which do you recommend most highly? _____________________

The "Alien" series, _Becoming Alien_, _Being Alien_, and _Human to Human_. I need to re-read them, if I can find a copy. Yeah, but . . . I found out that much on Wikipedia. (Well, not the part about you needing to re-read them.) What makes 'em good? Don't ferrets chew books? _____________________

What makes 'em good? Don't ferrets chew books? ![]() The Illegal Rebirth of Billy the Kid and Times Child were a lot of fun, but didn't really have that kind of impact on me. I haven't located the books in the middle, between those two. _____________________

Meh. For me, it's not about what you are wearing, but rather why you are wearing it. And as it can be pretty hard to ascertain why someone else has chosen to put on some astonishingly tacky and/or revealing piece of ick, I try not to assume that it's because they are a) on the make or, b) a guy. I simply work under the assumption that they have astonishingly tacky taste. ![]() I agree with you, and maybe my post just muddled my point there. ![]() Frankly, everyone has their own reasons, and its not my business to make assumptions about them. ![]() Certainly. But it also depends upon the social makeup of the places you hang out. SL is replete with morons, but I've found that not too many of them seem to want to pass their time in my bookstore ... Yeah. Every online community has its share of morons. But most of them also have corners where like minded morons can gather and laugh at the other morons. ![]() - so far, I've been pretty good about finding like minded morons to hang out with. ![]() _____________________

I absolutely agree with this; it's an important point. (Though perhaps newbie women are less susceptible to it than women who've been in SL for a while, as the newbies won't be aware that the assumption that those who won't voice are male is practically a meme in SL.) I dunno. I think 'newbie women' may be even more susceptible to being manipulated/feeling peer pressure since they may wish badly to fit in, and may be persuaded 'everyone does it' a bit easier. I always grit my teeth when I see in someone's profile that anyone who won't give real life information "is hiding something." How manipulative can someone get? I also have to laugh a bit when a guy says "well I'll offer mine" - just not the same at all, really, is it? (I know you were talking about voice but RL info is part of the 'please baby baby please' schtick, too.) _____________________

(I know you were talking about voice but RL info is part of the 'please baby baby please' schtick, too.) True enough about people wanting to fit in. And how many newcomers to SL would guess that the system is, by default, designed to enable the ill-intentioned to exploit them? And, yeah: the classic "confidence" trick is to convince people that they have to prove themselves to be Brave and Adventurous and Willing To Trust, as proof that they are worthy and admirable people. "Hey, baby, I gave you MY password....what's wrong, are you an insecure, repressed person, or what?" . ![]() _____________________

You are kidding, right? Just trying to evoke an emotional response? Or it is some sort of semantic game, a la 'no actual bodies exist in virtual worlds therefore rape cannot exist' (and we'll pretend that this makes the numberless depicitions of rape in virtual worlds into a non-topic)....? For once Pep has a valid point. Without a body, there is no rape. 'Virtual rape' is a contradiction in terms, and to argue that it exists makes you sound as crazy as those ultra-feminists who think that a man looking at a woman the wrong way constitutes a sexual assault. We may as well go the whole hog and make 'almost rape' an offence. Feminists would like that; if a man stops when the woman says no it would be too late, the offence has already been committed - off to jail with you. _____________________

Looks as though I need to revive the "Same Old Putrid Tactics" thread. The one being employed here, of course, being the "make some unsupportable claim, then when asked to support it, say 'I already did, can't you read?' Then when it's pointed out that the 'I already did' is quite false, post a few more insults. Rinse and repeat. Silly Pep! We see what you're doing! Conan has once again quoted in the post above (three above actually - #240) your mention of "depictions of rape", which is the reference that you demanded of me and I provided. See post #192 for the juxtaposition) Yes, it was *you* that mentioned "depictions" which is what I commented upon to your dismay, and to which I subsequently referred in a disparaging sense because you appeared unable to remember posting it, or even able to read it again when I referenced it. You should be a politician if you can forget so quickly and claim that it didn't happen when the proof is there for all to see. Pep (You should join the "Denial is just a river in Egypt" group; there are quite a few other over-emotional, over-reactive and illogical illiterates like you in it already. )_____________________

Now I just figure, some people want to be pretty ... I don't voice. I'm just not interested in hearing people munching on breakfast cereal, sucking beer or getting yelled at by their much better halves. I will turn it on for tutors and DJs, provided that they're not drunk or wack and even then I wont mic. Go romp through facebook for a few hours. Plenty of women there who you can see are women being over the top about beauty, bling, and sex without asking for your money or even giving a d*mm about you and what you think of them. - When it comes to avatars then as far as I'm concerned, girl is girl, boy is boy. What I see is all there is and I relate accordingly. And animals get woofed at But then I don't shag even if I am an outrageous flirt at times. Nor do I do relationships as I haz one of them for real so yeah that too. Although, this said, I don't think there is anything wrong with any guy having a good wank with the help of someone or something else. Magazine, video, 3D animation... spot the difference. Not a lot of difference, at least for most guys I know. Its just ooo! babeh !!! and all that and no biggie really at all as the outcome is the same. A big smile and feck I'm hungry now but nothing that a beer or cigarette can't fix ![]() FWIW, I think that RL guys with girl avatars wanking themselves is more normal than RL guys wanking themselves over their guy avatar doing stuff. Its a "Barbie or Ken Moment". Personally I find the Ken syndrome really weird when its coupled with the sneering "u is gay" comment sometimes aimed inworld at gurl avatars. Yeah right! Kenny !!! You handsome adorable hunky manthing you. Tell me again how much you spent on your gorgeous manly avatar?, and umm! who are you looking at when you're cybering with a female avatar ![]() Is a lot like Eddie Izzard's wonderful "Cake or Death ???" Umm! Cake please ![]() |

You didn't quote anyone so I'm going to assume you are replying to "candy bar". I saw the snickers candy bar for sale when I was in England. |

I was answering the question "what does Snickers make you think of?". Anybody over the age of 18 in the UK is unlikely to think of a "candy bar" (if we ever thought "candy bar" - we don't use the phrase) by that name because it used to be called 'Marathon' Pep (and there is a movement to change the name back as well.) _____________________

Yes, you can find Snickers candy bars in the UK - but generally that word is a sort of nasty laugh someone gives when hearing a lewd joke or something that has a double meaning like the WPC saying "taken down". _____________________
