I don't know if there was a thread about this before, but I was just curious. I'm thinking of getting an SL job so I will stop using my own money to feed my shopping addiction and I was curious as to what others had done for their first jobs and how you felt about it.

No job for me. That defeats the purpose for me.

Running a club and helping all of the new people that came to the sim. Just about did me in.

My first effort in SL that I got paid for was making T-shirts.

From: Stormy Dyrssen That could be interesting. I would be interested in hearing more about it. Hosting is a fun job, at least, I always thought so. You come up with your events, post them to the second life events page, and then run the event - usually a contest. Running an event means opening the contest boards for entries, then votes, then closing it out for the winner. You greet the people who show up and chat with them, always being upbeat and positive We're a new blues club, in fact, we've been open one week today and I'm thrilled with our progress! We had a couple of bad nights, but that's to be expected occasionally...any club owner who thinks they're going to be packed every night of the week is delusional If you're interested in talking further, feel free to contact me in-world after 4pm SL time.

My first job was hosting. 100L for 90 minutes (what was I thinking?) plus tips "split" with the owner. Never did get those tips.
Actually I loved hosting and even if I say so myself I was damned good at it. Flirted with everyone, danced like crazy, kept the banter going ...
Despite the club politics and the owner trying to rub prims with any woman around (self included ... EPIC FAIL!) it was fun.

Job? What is this job of which you speak?
I create clothing.. that's been my sole job since I joined. Stopped for a while, since I was having issues, but now.. it's my self-sustaining addict.. I mean, hobby! Yeah, that's it! Hobby!

I've been dabbling in learning to design clothing, but am a bit frustrated. I'm pretty good with PS and can create basic things, but I have all these fabulous ideas in my head and I can't figure out how to bring them to fruition. I've been meaning to attend the classes and all, but been a bit chickensh#@. Don't ask why.......I have no idea. It would be super fun though

Job???? I barely have enough time to PLAY in SL! I'm still waiting to for the newbie excitement of the place to wear off so that I can spend LESS time there and get back to some sort of RL.
Good thing the weather is miserable and my pretty little garden is tucked away or I'd be hip deep in weeds by now. My friends have threatened to forcibly remove me from my house to go out this weekend. I got it bad, but I ain't working for it.

My first and to this point only Job in SL is DJing, but I am a techie geek so DJing is right up my ally. Work at two venues currently, one pays 100 L$ per hour and has been around for a while, the other I work tips but it's a new club run my my best SL friend and honestly my "Take home" is about equal between the two. With hosting and DJing you have to make sure you enjoy the venue and are alright with the politics or you WILL be miserable at your job, and in turn not as good at it. Both DJing and hosting requires a level of interaction to be good at it, if you are miserable where you are it shows and your audience will be miserable.

I've never had a shop or really sold anything in Second Life - usually when I make something, I give it away for free In the Summer of 2005, however - I did experiment with selling land. I'd purchase plots of mainland in crappy places that no one wanted (for around $2/sqm), beautify it & put a home on top - then resell for $5/sqm. (Yes, prices were that low back then ) Over the course of the summer, I think I sold about 50 parcels, and all the profits went into the Shelter. It was a fun project, and kinda neat to take something ugly & make it attractive. Way too much work for it to go much beyond a fun experiment though.

When I worked there in my younger days it was packed every time...everyone there was very, very genuinely friendly..Dont give up on it yet, maybe ask someone in there what the schedule is for the dancers? I tend to hide away building now..I need to be more social to I think!

I started off scouring the Employment Ops board and contacted a couple of people who had ads there - the first one didn't amount to anything, but then I saw an ad for Club School, they train you do host/DJ and the training is free if you take up a job at VooDoo Lounge. I started off doing one night a week hosting, then got interested in the DJing side. I now do 1 host event a week and 2 DJ events there, and just took on another DJ event over a weekend at another club. It's fun! I wouldn't do it if it weren't.. the income isn't huge, but enough.

No one was said it yet but my first job was camping. This was back before camping bots really took off. What I liked about it was the conversation with people and making it a fun atmosphere. There was a few game around then that we would play for free and make bets with people. Making 100L per night was easier back then. $2L/7 min. + what every you made on bets for about 3 hours of work (or in my case ... fun).
Ahhh, the good ol days... I think that was only 6 months ago.
