This is a very true statement. I spend more time than I should online, a bit of it was because I found a nice guy on here i wanted to spend some time with, he was/is in UK I'm in US.. We spent a lot of time online together.. And I would stay on for hours just talking to him and building things with him... and stuff.. "Smiles" Also, Specificly to builders etc, when you get into building something, or making something you loose track of time, I know I do..

But the potential for addiction is strong, as were early chat room portals such as AOL. Many relationships were built or destroyed because of the addictions to chat. This is no different and as long as we are human we will become addicted to something at some point perhaps..

I will admitt.. I have a pile of laundry stacked to my nose.... and sometimes I forget groceries or to eat..... (lost 10lbs btw) woot! SL as a diet.. hmmmmmm..... I'm also not riding my bike as much or working in my RL yard, but this is FL and omg it is so hot out!

I had my cable go down for a few days and I was fine with not having SL...Ok, well not "fine" but i survived..

Being unattached right now to a SL love is going to make my time online drop I am sure. But I work at a wonderful SL club (beyond good and evil, thanks for asking) and have commitments to owner there so who knows. I also have rentals I need to get rented...maintained...

I watched a special report on the television one evening about SL and the people who use it this one report featured a couple, he was in a wheelchair and was limited with the things he could do with his wife, so they found SL and he can take her dancing, make love to her, and do things with her on SL he would never be able to do in RL... It affords people to do things like that. Too many stories about whats wrong with SL and not enought about what is right about it.

T.S

The key issue is whether things in your RL are getting short shrift. If they are, then it may be an addiction.

Like any virtual world, SL is hard to participate in meaningfully on a very limited schedule. What I mean by that is that if you are running a business in SL, or having a relationship in SL, or using SL as a major creative outlet ... it's not going to be an hour a day type of thing because those kinds of things just take more time to do. The issue becomes, then, whether you are simply trading other "entertainment" time for SL (ie the mythical "free time" we have when we have done all the things that grownups are supposed to do on a priority basis) or is it cutting into time that should (or would otherwise) be spent on things that are priority (RL job, RL life errands, RL relationships, etc.). That's a different calculus for every person, but one you have to make honestly.

For all those that are selecting 5mins or 15 mins.......What can you do in that little time?

I answered thinking "on average" since I don't/can't log in every day. I can get a couple of half-hour sessions on weeknights and perhaps an hour or two over the weekend. Maybe that will change when I have more free time, but I'm just finding less to keep me coming back. It's probably a factor of time spent.

weekdays, 6-9 hours, weekends 14-20 or so, sometimes around 40 hours at once on long weekends

but admit it--we're all SL enthusiests, so the results of your poll are that SL enthusiests spend a lot of time on SL.

Lori and I are hooked!
We spend every spare moment we have together in SL. (evenings and weekends)
We are both relatively new here, and are looking to either buy land, or lease a really nice bungalow near the beach. We’ve met a lot of wonderful and crazy friends who are always there for you. Certainly SL is a step up from the real world.

Peace...

When I first joined, I was in world with my RL/SL husband every night after the kids went to bed. However, that has tapered off. Now I usually spend 1/2 hour in the morning before work and anywhere from 0-2 hours a night during the week. On the weekend, it's a couple of hours each afternoon and maybe a couple of hours 1 or 2 nights on the weekend. I am sometimes on while my kids are around, but usually the time I spend logged into SL is while my son is napping or sleeping for the night, and my daughter is busy with friends or in her room for the night. I figure that it's time I would probably just be spending reading or watching TV anyway. Don't get my wrong, I still get my reading time in during work lunch breaks, etc, but SL does replace some mindless TV viewing...so that can't be bad, right?

It used to be 4 hours or so every night, but recently it's been much less - usually only 15-30 minutes from time to time, just to catch up with people and check over the systems I maintain.

I fluctuate depending on projects. If I don't have any impending projects, I spend about 1-3 hours inworld (usually late at night).

If I have a big sim-build going on--I spend about 15 hours a week (after RL work).

Well, yes. I stated that in an earlier post here. Those on the forums are those that are more Community Minded in SL. (or those with bigger mouths to bit** ^.~)

However, while we of teh Forum may be a low % of SL total population (or even teh concurrant population), I feel there is a large representation of SL society here. From buisness owners, to land-barrons, to renters, to landowners, to clubbers, to builders, scriptors, combat simmers, fliers, drivers, pie eaters, panty wavers and crab-grabbers. *grins* We have a HUGE diversity here.

So while we may be "enthusiests". We are also a fair representation of the Community as a whole.

Dude, you are a true and good friend, and I love you like the brother that my mom claims she never had, but you are in fact acting like a flaming douche on white toast with a side order of dickknob salsa..maybe you should reconsider this course of action and we go find something else to do.

*bump*

I'd like to see this poll (and discussion) continue. I have to confess I am fascinated by those people who spend 8, 10, or even more hours per day on SL.

Currently, I spend about 1.0-2.0 hours per day in SL, averaged out for the week. It used to be a lot more, but honestly, sometimes the stress factor caused by certain interpersonal relationships on SL helps keep me away for a time.

Yes, I agree. Most who are posting in forums are going to be on the high end. My guess, based on the activity I see in my friends list, is that most users are 1-2 hours a few days a week.

This damn thing is such an addiction. I spend a good 2 to 3 hours on "school nights" online when I really should be sleeping. And don't get me started about weekends...

Wish I had discovered it years ago! :)

Love.

Its certainly could be described as an addiction. I though had been staying up late playing games on the pc for over a decade. And when not wrapped up in some pc game I was glued to the boob tube watching all my favorite TV shows. SL on the other hand provides a level of entertainment unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. The interaction with people from all backgrounds and from all over the world fascinates me. The ability to take on many personas never leaves me bored. I own things, and make things, break things. Oh and easily 4 to 6 hrs a night.

I so identify with this. SL is such an amazing place. Then add in a Master who's on a good amount of the time and some close friendships and there you are...lots of time spent on SL!

I can see, that now that I'm forming friendships, my estimate from earlier in this thread is going to go way up. Already, this past week, I spent way too many late nights because I got so carried away in conversation that I didn't realized the clock at gone past 1am! Geez, I'm usually in bed by 11pm the latest! And I even did this one night when I had to work the next day. What on earth was I thinking? But, I was so engrossed in my interaction, that I really didn't notice the time.

I sure wish I'd downloaded this the summer before this one, when I was bedridden with a leg injury for over a month and then subsequently the same after my surgery. It's when I first heard about it, but thought it too odd to bother with. Sure would have kept me better company than the television all day long.

Yes I read that, but in my view whether the forum posters are a cross-section of different kinds of "activities" in SL is kind of beside the point when it comes to assessing the main question, which is how much time people are spending on SL. I continue to believe that forums posters, on average, are heavier users of SL than non-forum posters, so whether we are diverse in terms of what we do is beside the point -- the point is regardless of what we do, we are spending more time doing it than others, on average. Again, I base this on the anecdotal observations of the people on my friend list.

Agreed, and I said as much in my post. However, I have close to 300 people on my Friend's List. Out of that, none (that I'm aware of) use the forums. Yes, I typed that right. Zero out of a good 250-300 (give or take a few).

Of those, there are several club owners, each of whom spend untold hours in SL (One of which I have doubts on whether she even sleeps), buisness owners, spending 8-10 hours a day as this IS their RL income, scriptors, who do what they do plugged into the grid in ways I can not fathom *chuckles*

It's why I stated that it was the person's own idea when they read this post, on how to figure out their time in-world. It's by no means all inclusive, but, unless LL runs a 100% survey on every single Resident, it's about as close as we can get.

Taking all those on my FL, and all the others I know in-world, but aren't on my FL, the pattern of the poll matches that of those people.

If your FL doesn't match the poll, then so be it. We all travel in the circles that make us happy. Perhaps mine matches more because of being in SL longer. Not so much as "experiance", but more that the people I'm friend's with are from a different "generation" in SL. I have friends that are Charter Members with Lifetime Memberships. I myself came in a good bit before Open Registration, and I think that was a HUGE turning point in the substance of the Community.

I call it "generations" not because of RL ages, but of our SL ages and the times within the world. Being a technological world, Ages happen a bit faster here. It will be very intresting to see what is, and what was, even another 5 years down the road.

This same poll may show a completely differnt outlook in those 5 years ^.^
