So, How long do you spend in SL daily?

I reached a point where SL was seriously interfering with my real life, so I disconnected my cable modem and gave it to a family member to withhold it from me for one month. Drastic, but when your only connectivity option is a dial-up modem, it's pretty easy to avoid SL ;-)

It did the trick for me, and now I am on the grid a lot less often now. I did spend one evening doing some terraforming and landscaping for a new parcel of land I had just bought, but other than that, I'm in and out in an hour.

SL is fun, but it's just too easy for me to get addicted. I find it troubling that about a third of the respondents say they spend the equivalent of a whole workday in SL, every day. If you spend 8 hours asleep, 8 hours at work, and 8 hours on SL, it's likely that something important in your life is not getting done...

4 - 6 hours a day doing paid work, sightseeing and socializing. I don't consider myself addicted to SL. I do like making things, making money and hanging with other creative people.

What do you mean by "spending time in SL" - being logged in or being active building, talking, exploring etc.? Since one my PCs is on all the time anyway I am logged in whenever I want, usually even 24/7. But this doesn't mean I am active doing something.

easily 6 hours /day average..... more if I'm scripting....much MUCH more

I guess they should have asked for the unique user count too.... but then that's skewed from the time when you had to pay past the first account.... people just used a dif card/name and poof, another free alt

LL stats are based on how long you can actually use the service and not on how long people would like to or can stay on. For if it flew more stably far more would use it for business or play and be on far longer

My stupid satellite (those that know me are sick of hearing about this) limits my time in SL because of a bandwidth cap. I'm currently trying to merge RL work into SL as well as hobbies. So, depending on my bandwidth I can be in world anywhere from 5 hours a day to much much more. I have to limit my "fun time" of shopping and such between the hours of 3am -6am my time since thats when I have unlimited usage, and I only do that a couple times a month. As much of a night owl that I am, I just can't keep those hours regularly. If it weren't for my bandwidth cap I'd easily spend 8-10 hours a day in SL working on business contacts, developing building skills, networking, and just basically have fun the rest of the time.

I used to log in for longer stints but I've had more RL responsibilities crop up over the years. These days I'll do 2-5 hours a day, 1-4 days a week. Give or take.

I easily use to spend 12 - 14 hours a day in SL. That's greatly reduced at this point. Now it's anywhere from 2 - 10 but probably closer to 2 hours lately.

Can I add a question into the poll?
Do women spend more time in SL than men? Or vice versa?

At least 2 hours per day and often longer on my days off. Second Life is one of my main forms of recreation. And I would miss not "seeing" or chatting with my in-world friends.

LL would probably mean time spent logged in. The 24/7 in your case *grins*

I'd personally on concider the time you spend sitting at the PC working with SL. That also includes time there but "afk" for bathroom, drinks, meals, recognising the family for 5 minutes....=^.^=

It really is an honest opinion. If you feel that you spen 24/7 in SL (due to being logged in for customers, friends, camping, whatever), then that's the answer. It's all in what YOU feel is right for your time in SL. Not LL's opinion, not some barely known news site, not mine. Yours =^.^=

Though I'm having a ball reading all the responses *giggles* I'm wierd like that ^.~ Though I imagine those who read the forums are in the higher end of SL usage. I never thought until now that those not using the forums are prolly those that don't stay logged in for long. The "Tourists" rather the then "Residents".

Food for thought *munches her donuts and coffee*

Antoher thought, I felt worth of a post *Grins*

For all those that are selecting 5mins or 15 mins.......What can you do in that little time?

I barely rez the world in that time. I would guess it's people just checking IMs and such, but if you're not on that long, why would you be getting IMs? Even buisness people in SL need to be logged in to put in new products, manage land/prims, check on things, etc, etc.

Am I missing an aspect of SL? (easily possible)

I just have too much on at the moment (exams in particular atm) to spend time in SL. I am winding them down now, but I have been renting out whole sims - these haven't asked much time of me, because I only really need to go in to collect rent and sort out any problems that arise. I have IMs to email setup, so I check my email and if no one has IMed me, I usually don't go in.

I will probably spend some more time later in the year, as I would really like to get back to the building that I enjoyed when I first discovered SL.

Two days out of the week I cannot at all then suffer withdrawal (!) - I get home and log about 6:00 pm and shut down around 3 am every day - Sat & Sun it's at least a 16 hour day. Addicted? Nah...

4-5 hours a day Mon-Thurs.. (I work a 4 day work week). Fridays around 12 hours (Mostly scripting and building) Saturdays about 8-10 hours, as RL chores need to be done... Sundays varies, as low a 6 hours, or as high a 12 depending on RL needs...

Hmmm, addicted is such an ugly word, so I won't call it that... I do enjoy my time in SL, and it sure beats watching TV.. When on for long stretches I do take frequent breaks, sometimes logging off and sometimes not...

I have a serious, loving relationship here and SL is where we can be together.. So it is with her that I spend my evenings. When I am on alone during the day, that time is devoted to building, scripting and talking to my many friends here.. I hope to get a business going to both have some fun and hopefullly pay for our tier, so that time is more like a second job..... One that so far pays REALLY poorly... *laughs*

Sl is a first for me in a couple of ways..

- It is the first online community that I've truly joined... I am in world an average of five hours on weekdays and eight on weekends. It has cut down on my rl social life some, my rl friends think i've gone insane. Other rl hobbies have taken a back seat.

- This is the first forum where I posted more that just a few responses (I blame that on you folks...) - I find it a good way to 'stay' in-world while at work and sitting in boring meetings... (Not sure if that is a good thing)

5 or 6 hours per night during the week, more on the weekends. Same for my RL wife and SL partner. We've got a band that performs frequently in world and she also has a gesture shop, so that time is pretty evenly split between work and play. There's a lot of related time doing things in Photoshop, updating MySpace listings, or of ton of other little details that tie our virtual lives together with our real ones, it's a full time gig, lol.

One thing that I find a little funny is I have spent lots of time playing MMOs over the years, and never came close to logging the kind of hours I do in SL. Mechanics and graphics might change, but a level grind is still a level grind, and I'd end up getting bored. Even funnier is I tried SL a couple of times over the last two years and stopped because I couldn't figure out anything to do :)

This is totally me as well. For all the time I spent in MMOs I played solo 99% of the time, rarely spoke to other players. In SL I forced myself to start talking to people and be sociable, and it's made a major difference in my involvement level. I think what also helped is going into it I had a goal of launching our band in SL, and I was highly motivated to pursue that in a way that I had not been driven to participate in other online communities.

Yes. my first few months were like that. helped along by the fact it was wintertine. Lately I've managed to cut back on SL time and reclaim my RL, using the Forum as a bridge.

This is a very true statement. I spend more time than I should online, a bit of it was because I found a nice guy on here i wanted to spend some time with, he was/is in UK I'm in US.. We spent a lot of time online together.. And I would stay on for hours just talking to him and building things with him... and stuff.. "Smiles" Also, Specificly to builders etc, when you get into building something, or making something you loose track of time, I know I do..

But the potential for addiction is strong, as were early chat room portals such as AOL. Many relationships were built or destroyed because of the addictions to chat. This is no different and as long as we are human we will become addicted to something at some point perhaps..

I will admitt.. I have a pile of laundry stacked to my nose.... and sometimes I forget groceries or to eat..... (lost 10lbs btw) woot! SL as a diet.. hmmmmmm..... I'm also not riding my bike as much or working in my RL yard, but this is FL and omg it is so hot out!

I had my cable go down for a few days and I was fine with not having SL...Ok, well not "fine" but i survived..

Being unattached right now to a SL love is going to make my time online drop I am sure. But I work at a wonderful SL club (beyond good and evil, thanks for asking) and have commitments to owner there so who knows. I also have rentals I need to get rented...maintained...

I watched a special report on the television one evening about SL and the people who use it this one report featured a couple, he was in a wheelchair and was limited with the things he could do with his wife, so they found SL and he can take her dancing, make love to her, and do things with her on SL he would never be able to do in RL... It affords people to do things like that. Too many stories about whats wrong with SL and not enought about what is right about it.
