From: Samantha Goldflake Excuse me, someone here may shed some light... Those of you who are in the hundreds friends figure, how do you deal with all of the "Hi", "How do you do", "What are you doing?", "Can I come where you are", "Want to come with me" and the "You're always busy" IMs that attack you when you come online or when bunches of your friends do? Well this is what some are saying. They have 1000+ people in their "Friends List" and yet only five of their "friends" will actually bother to IM them. I'm definitely not one of them. I don't collect cards. I'm also guessing that some people will disable online notifications for a lot of their "friends".

I have probably close to 100 simply because it's been a while since I've cleaned up in there.
I only actively talk to about 10-20 of the people on my list.

Just like having a hundred friends with your cell phone number. Not all call you at the same time, and those that bug you too often, you start to not answer (or even remove from the list). Though I tend to try to explain this to these freinds and most are understanding (or they wouldn't be my friend in the first place) and will only IM me when they ahve something to say/do but not jsut for inane chatter. For those that are annoyed at the popup of friends online/offline: Do you know you can turn that off in Preferences? *grins* ~Jessy

I rarely turn down a friendship offer. Many of the people on my extensive list are newbies, many of those are French (I'm bilingual). I feel that new people are a bit lost at first, and that having someone in their friend's list is important to them. SL is particularly difficult for those who know no English, as English is the dominant language (even some of the their menus are not translated).
I think I've only removed 2 or 3 people, the very few who are really annoying. I do have a few who IM me for no reason and have nothing to say. But, they're not doing any harm, and it takes no time to say hello, I'm fine, and I'm busy right now.
As for the online status, you can uncheck that in your contacts window, and you don't have to see the blue popup every time.
I agree, the calling cards are useless. We can look at someone's profile just as well without it.

As people need to tp me, or i need to have the option to alter their prims, they offer me friendship to do so. I hardly ever take the time to remove them again. So my 'friend' count is now over the 400 mark. Never take the trouble of cleaning it out either. Usually, cleaning out the friends list only causes drama. Basically, i know who my friends are, I don't need a list to tell me PS. There's one way to get you immediately off my list. It's group spamming events. Instant removal.

Wow, I never noticed before that the polls show who voted for which thingie . . . great now everyone now knows I'm nearly friendless (if the first one had been 0-10, I'd still have chosen the first option; why does the list start at 0-50? I feel sad now).

Back in the days of the stipend rate bonus, we all used to trade calling cards because it was factored into the bonus. I have dozens of stranger's cards. After the rate bonus was taken away, I got more conservative about calling cards and friendship. I guess I still have maybe 200 or so cards, many of them are either abandoned accounts or strangers.

From: Conifer Dada There's no point in having a long list of names of people you can't remember anything about! I would agree with that..I have two and I don't know who they are..

Unfortunately, I have in the 51-100 range.
How many of them do I actually talk to? About three.
Some are other designers I have on just for business chat once in a blue moon.
I really should go in and just delete the people who don`t converse with me, no other reason for them to really be on my list I guess.

From: DaQbet Kish When you remove friends should you IM them first or just drop them? I at least check their profile. Usually it’s obvious if they’ve not been on in a long while and probably will never be on again…sad if you plan to remove me from your friends list let me know first Seriously though, if I am removing people (which I have only done once, when I cleaned off over 100 from my list) I always send them an im, so they know I did it. Otherwise if someone is gone from my list I usually contact them to see why, cuz sometimes SL just seems to do it for me (I still have close to 200 on my list) Sadly when I first started I would accept invites to friends list and also ask for them, I did not know about calling card. Now the calling card folder, that is another story, I am scared to count mine LOL Anywho DaQbet I hope you and I remain friends a long time, you are fun and cool to talk to

From: Cocoanut Koala hahahahaha honestly I have...the first..some guy (I think) dressed as a fox (what's that all about..?) on Orientation Island gave me some kind of 'card'..I had no idea what was going on and just hit 'accept' in the hope it would 'go away'...as y'do..since then SL has been telling me he's online..huh!! The second..at the Kat Festival..some dinosaur (you read correctly..'Coelophysis' I think..) ran up to me and gave me another card.."jeez not another" I thought..and you've guessed it..I've been stuck with it ever since. Friends..don't you love em........

Wow. 100+ cards? How do people deal with that?
When I first joined I had 30 something. I could never have any privacy. Always got tracked, swamped in random IMs, or some never messaged again. This was all before the privacy thing.
Eventually I cleared my list, now I'm down to 12 or so. The one's I consider good friends I kept on my list along with a few new ones. ^^
Now I just decline when someone I haven't even spoken to offers me friendship. Seems kind of silly. Reminds me of those Myspace people who try and add everyone they can just to brag show how many "friends" they have or to feel important. Eh, at least we have privacy now. =)

From: DaQbet Kish When you remove friends should you IM them first or just drop them? I do that... unless they've IM'd me first to alert me to their departure. I use the same rules I use for my cell phone. If you haven't called (IM'd) in the past 60 days I'm giving that 16k of space to somebody else.

Close to 1000, but not quite, last I checked. A few hundred (yes!) are friends I hang out with when I have a chance. Really, not kidding in the slightest. The remainder: business contacts, people interested in land, that kinda thing. Since I need to communicate with notecards when I'm offline, it's helpful for people to be able to tell that. Honestly, I wish SL had a 'business' IM center. Dealing with 10 people a day, the old chat interface was fine. The new voice one? Not so fine. Dealing with 100+ people a day, the old interface was problematic at best and the new one... don't get me started Note that one of the main reasons I have soooo many friends: I tend to log in at all sorts of various times. If I were to log in at only, say, 5-7pm SLT every day I'd have maybe 15% of what I do now.

This message appears above the options if it's public: "Be advised that this is a public poll: other users can see the choice(s) you selected." I suspected this might happen when I first noticed the thread. Not sure why the names matter. If anything, it makes the results unreliable. Who wants people to know they're unpopular right? But anyway. Time to worry is when you've only got 0-50 friends after three years.

From: Usagi Musashi I believe people do have more then 700 on their list. That's just nuts, how would one manage such a large list. I have about 10-15 at the most at a given time, and I dont accept friendship offers that often. If I did, my list would have hundreds on it. Instead of just accepting offers all the time, I instead tell people my list is too large as it is and offer a swap of cards. They're there for a reason.

Older avies on sl its possible. As a few have said in this thread i was about weekly pay bonus. And or people just giving out friendships for fun. It depends on ones views on the subject. I can easy count 1000 friendships in my time on sl.
