From: Phil Deakins It doesn't. I think you may have misunderstood me. I didn't mean that there is a technical limitation. Of course, a hall with an orchestra could be microphoned up and heard in SL as live music, but that's not going to happen (or extremely rarely), and neither is a whole group going to play live except very rarely. Yeah the Liverpool Philharmonic are the only orchestra I've heard of that played SL, there may have been others, it's feasible. The problem with the live music scene in SL is similar to the problems with plenty of other entertainment angles, there just isn't the money around to sustain the scene, which is a great shame because it should be an area where SL has a vibrant music scene that people outside SL hear about. I know some musicians are angling for better support and promotion of music in SL, I think Crap Mariner might be involved in that.

On the other hand, SL does provide a platform for people who fancy themselves as singers etc. but don't have the confidence to do it in front of people in RL, or they do have the confidence, possibly built up through karaoke, but don't have the gear or even the knowledge to go out and do it semi-pro. Some such people are excellent singers - and some are poor, of course. Such people wouldn't get the chance to do it for real due to their nervousness (or lack of gear or knowledge), but they can hide behind the fact that nobody can see them in SL, and build up the confidence. And they can even become popular entertainers here. I'm sure that's what many SL entertainers are. I went to one live event, where the duo were billed as "SL's answer to _____ and _____" or something like that. I got to the door, heard a few bars from them, and left immediately

I've seen yesterday's performer at two other venues now, and I gotta say...
WTH was I listening to yesterday? It was cheesy electronic backing tracks with singing dubbed over them. Not even in the performer's genre. A stream crossing? (don't ever cross the streams!)
Anyway, for anyone wondering how I'd characterize Edward's music as pre-recorded and his performance as no crowd interaction, I apologize. He's quite good.
I'll re-evaluate the venue, too, sometime in the future. I'm pretty sure the chat wasn't from the wrong parcel, though, as the owner did respond to things I said.

From: Ciaran Laval The problem with the live music scene in SL is similar to the problems with plenty of other entertainment angles, there just isn't the money around to sustain the scene That's one problem; another is that you can't get a large crowd together for a performance. Yet another is that a performance usually isn't visually very stimulating; you're not actually watching the performer play. (OK, this is true for sex too, which doesn't stop it.)

DJ's, Pre-recorded or Live, it's all music to me. And most seem to put a half decent stage show on as well. If I only listened to live music, I probably wouldn't know any more than our school band music Look up SpaceJunky in SL, they do a great show

I have been to quite a few (though I wouldn't say "many" events with "live" musicians over the years. We regularly have several musicians at the Isle events every 6 months or so (trying to do them more often, but, it is difficult). Of all the ones I have been to, the audience was always very active, appreciative, and the musician interacted with everyone throughout the show. Just a plug for a few of the ones I have seen/been to: Cypress Rosewood CelticMaidenWarrior Lancaster Mankind Tracer Cypress does tons of concerts all the time. He uses backing tracks (though could be live synth; not sure) for atmosphere, but plays live Native American flutes, his signature instrument. Anyway, obviously there are some out there who are just DJing their own music, just as there are some venues full of bots. However, the good music, good musicians, and good crowds are not hard to find. Oh, and for Phil: mu·si·cian (my-zshn) n. One who composes, conducts, or performs music, especially instrumental music. Thus, composer is a subset of musician, and musicians can be composers, too!

I goto places that have over 60 people in attendance, rather large for SL. Not visually stimulating? You've never seen Squidfisher on stage have you? The guy is a nut. He wears an over sized sombrero and pink too-too with shorts and cowboy boots. He's constantly changing animations and puts on a pretty good show.

From: Phil Deakins groups who simply play copies of popular songs, as best they can, aren't the real musicians, whether they play it all live or with some backing tracks.
Singers aren't really musicians at all, unless they create their own stuff, or create their own arrangements. They are performers... Good, expressive singers are more akin to actors than to musicians. . Every musician (inlcuding SINGERS) is PERFORMING someone else's work, i.e. THE SONGWRITER/COMPOSER's work.

From: BreninLlwyd Caeran After these two remarks, I'm trying to figure out what musician would ever bother to play in SL... least of all for free. Performers. Entertainers. Musical entertainers. Singers.
