OK, you're free to invent your own definitions for words. Just don't be surprised when it causes confusion.

I find it more fruitful to find a word that captures the distinction you're getting at, rather than changing the definition of one that means something else.

I do, however, make a similar distinction, "real musicians" being those who are head-and-shoulders above me in ability. Which is a lot of them ... ;)
There you go then - you're not a real musician even though you can make music and please people with it :)

I've thought about it a lot in my time, and I don't think there is a seperate word for each of those concepts. Whenever it's come up in conversation, I've just explained my thoughts on what a musician actually is, as I did here, and people have understood what I meant. Saying something like, "To me, those are the true musicians - not people like me who only copy", after explaining it, has always been fine.

ETA:
I thought I should add that I haven't been talking about the quality of performers - some are stunningly good and others, well, not so good. I've only been differentiating between what I see as true musicians and people who can make/perform music.

Phil, I feel like you are confusing the word Musician and Composer. Would you call the 1st chair violinist of the London Symphony not a real musician because he is playing other people's compositions?

Actually, yes, I would say that about him/her - just as I suspected about that classical pianist in Portugal.

A composer is certainly a true musician, because s/he creates music, as distinct from merely playing (copying) other people's music.

I used to know someone who could only play the piano if she had the dots in front of her. She didn't 'understand' music at all, so couldn't just play along with a tune that she knew. She envied me. Of course, the 1st violin is bound to understand music, and is almost certainly a true musician, but the stage performance with the orchestra doesn't necessarily imply it. S/he could simply be a fanstastic sight reader with a nice sound. Or s/he might be the only one with a Strad :)

I know that most people's idea of what a musician is differs from mine. But I do think that mine is a valid view, and it came about because of being what most people consider to be a musician.

.

But what if the composer can't play 95% of the instruments?

Still a true musician - because s/he created the music.

The most successful writer of musicals some time ago was a Brit called Lionel Bart. He couldn't play any instrument, but he wrote the songs for the musicals. He was a true musician, among other things, because he created music in his head.

Sidetrack:
Davy Jones of the Monkeys arrived in America to play the part of The Artful Dodger in "Oliver" - one of Lionel Bart's musicals.

I'm a bit puzzled by this posting. I go to live music all the time, I've been to numerous venues and I own a venue myself. Never, not once, have I seen anyone in the audience whom I suspected to be a bot. Many times, people are not chatting in local - but they're definitely there! When I'm at live music, I frequently answer customer IMs or work in Photoshop. Sometimes I IM with other people at the event whom I know because we frequent the same live performers. I will sometimes put an applause gesture in local or a comment to the musician, but that's about it. If I know the performer and I want to chat with them, I generally do so AFTER the show and in IM. So does everyone else. Performers are usually quiet after the show because they are buried in IMs.

We have booked a couple of acts at Solace Beach that claimed to be live and we later suspected were fully prerecorded. It was annoying, but we simply didn't book them again. We now go see all of our acts before we book them, and get recommendations from managers of other venues as to who is good, and easy to work with. There are MANY excellent live performers in SL. Some use backing tracks, but I see no problem with that - and often the tracks are them and/or their band playing. If someone is a singer, I don't expect them to play guitar, bass, and drums at the same time. :-P And it's not like every live musician can assemble their band to play a 1 hr show over the internet that will probably bring in $30-$50 US if they're lucky. The economics of SL music just doesn't support a full live band setup.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion on musicians, their music and performance, and venue owners. No one is being forced to listen or stay in any place in SL, that's what tps and the close button are for.

However, the description of the Event last night is incorrect in many ways. I was there, just behind you.

I had a great time, with lots of people I know and many others I have talked to/seen at other musician's events and venues. (These bots must be amazing to support different musicians and venues .. I wonder what their purpose is?)

There was just the right amount of interaction for me and of course it's technically limited anyway on a 4 Regions venue.
I didn't say anything in Local Chat, does this make me a bot ?
How does anyone know who is talking to the musician after his performance?

The reason for the cancellation of the next musician was well-known to many people. I'm sure the venue owner would have told anyone who sent him an IM.

I prefer the (awesome) performance last night to musicians who strum a few notes on a guitar into a mic in their kitchen. But that's the point, my preference is not everyone's. Thank God. Any world is poorer for a lack of variety and choice.

So IMO awesome performance, great (human) crowd, wonderful venue and owner. Perfect evening!!

Noooo - when he first went over there - as a kid :) He stayed over there, which is why he was around when they were creating the Monkeys.

Ellla. You need to take into account that Anya is a bot hunter. She assumes bots when people don't move or speak in chat for a while.

Wow! That's an entirely different scenario.

Anya....it seems that your frustration is more with open chat versus private IM....in any setting? People not using open chat?

It's kind of like when you're at a party....and you're speaking with the person standing next to you. You are speaking at a level so that only they can hear you....and you carry on a conversation. (private IM) .....You don't shout out the whole conversation so that everyone within range can hear. (open chat) In fact....shouting out an entire conversation in open chat, while someone is performing, is a wee bit rude. Isn't it?

Is that the problem? That you can't see all these conversations going on....at the one-to-one level?

I hear a lot of the tiny's complain that its harder for them at shows because no one ever thinks to accomidate for them.. dances places to sit etc.

I myself sometimes go as a dragon, of course she is huge.. and I usually get omg stop laggin us... lol a few just ask me to stay in the back so I dont block anyones view... (cam cam cam) anyway... I love it when people come to shows in furries or tinys or boxes..
its cool, cause face it in RL you would be kicked out of a place lol

Oh, my raccoon isn't a tiny. But a quad. Well, I sometimes get up my hind legs and hop around like I'm dancing. I'm about the size of a "normal" raccoon. I mean proportionally, of course, otherwise I wouldn't fit on the screen.

The howls, text spam, and the like is like shouting loudly at a party. While also setting off fireworks. Maybe firing off some shots from a handgun.

Well, that's a normal party, in my neck of the woods. But let's say you're talking to the person next to you, (in SL)....and you say....."Dang....you look fine in those jeans".....or "omg, that singer is hot....sizzling...."....or "check out that guy to your right, with the red mohawk"......all in private IM.

Anya may be missing these.

OK... I'm a live music performer in SL and I hit the big negative buttons mentioned here.

1) I use backing tracks
2) I use alts / bots.
So does J.M. Jarre. :D

Well, since you are talking about my venue, my gig last night, let me please answer! I notice that you showed up about 1 1/2 hours into a 2 hour show. Many of us were chatting in private IM by then. Sorry you were so bored! I noticed you didn't say a peep in local chat.

Now, if you showed up nearer to the beginning of the event, you might have seen a LOT of conversation in local chat. at 75% of the way though the event, a lot of us (me included) were in private IM with our honeys!

It depends on what you mean prerecorded tracks. Prerecorded backing tracks are normal and the singing is live. In fact, without backing tracks, live music is SL would be very limited - limited to voice and guitar, for instance.

Yes Phil I know the difference.
I recommended a singer who uses prerecorded background music.

There are people using 100% prerecorded music and calling it live. Those people should be advertising as prerecorded.

I enjoy the live music scene in SL and support both the artists and the venues who bring it to SL.

My partner is straight up live. He plays his guitar and he plays piano to. I cant mention his name here, cause its against tos..

What is his name? I would like to go see him sometime.

No violation of the TOS if I ask you and you answer. Angel Lehane is my partner and I have her permission to mention her name whenever I like.
