Inventory Limits.. is this happening?

Someone just informed me that LL is gonna be implementing an inventory limit soon. Is this true? If so.. whats the point in SL anymore.. I'm getting more rules here then I have living at my parents house IRL.

I received this notecard about it:

SL has been in talks about possibly limiting inventories. (Read Blog posts at secondlife.com) This is not confirmed yet. It is in talks of 10,000 Item Limit for those with Free Accounts. Rumor is 25k limit for paid accounts. This Notecard is by all means not to cause an uproar or for you to stop winning Lucky chair/MM prizes or to stop shopping.

But whether SL makes this new choice or not, its best to clean out your inventory anyways. Don't some of you have items you purchased and have no idea where they went? Or maybe you won a Great prize that you wish you could wear but its somewhere lost in your inventory. You deserve to wear the thousands of things in your inventory!

Before getting started, please read this warning:
􀀁

After you've read that, here is the NC to Cleaning your Inventory:
􀀀

Have Any questions, please contact: Unico Solo. I am a busy person but I will be happy to help with questions when I can about this subject.
--------------------------
Even if I could afford a paid account (and I cant), then my inventory still would be too big. Whats the point in even having a market to buy shit from if we have to try to maintain how much we buy? Do you know how freakign long it would take to cut my inventory down and how much crap that I need would have to go?

I would like it if a Linden answered me and answered me straight. No beating around the bush crap. Yes or no. What the heck people?

So far I'm not aware of this as anything more than rumour. I don't give it much credibility, any more than rumours of attachments that steal your password or do permanent damage to inventory.

The likelihood of a Linden actually commenting in this forum is pretty much ZERO, so don't hold your breath for anything useful there. Someone better informed might just have an answer, but take all replies (including this one ha-ha!) with a huge pinch of salt unless backed up by a link to an official Linden blog post.

That said, keeping your inventory small does speed up loading times and reduces the load on the servers, so going in now and then and ditching stuff you don't need isn't a bad thing. Having an organised inventory helps you find stuff and reduces "Lindens ate my favourite stuff" false alarms. I'm also told having fewer items in the top-level folders (ie sorting everything into sub-folders) speeds up inventory access.

Even IF this rumour ever comes to pass, it will take LL a year to implement.

I've heard nothing of inventory limits being discussed in any official capacity. Are you perhaps thinking about the upcoming script limits coming in 2010?

The only rumors of inventory limits I've seen have been from residents looking for ways to punish basic account holders. Since the notecard you received cites no sources for the rumor, I'd consider it unfounded.

Gosh, I hope this is only a rumor. I'm getting close to the 20K mark.

Kelli, on the above comment...do you (or anyone else) know if this means it's better to put things in "top level" subfolders, like My Inventory/Stuff, or in subfolders inside the system folder, like My Inventory/Clothing/Stuff?

I have very few folders directly under My Inventory. But my system folders are highly subdivided.

Yeah!
When I lived with my parents, I had over 40,000 different things in my room. There's only 30,000 things there now as I have moved 10,000 things to my own place.
My parents want me to clean the stuff out, but I can't afford a room big enough to hold them. :(

Lin - I heard (here on the forums long ago) that there are two issues here.

1) Keep the number of items/folders directly under My Inventory small as that has the greatest impact on the indexing and searching of your inventory.

2) Create your own set of folders/sub-folders rather than using the System ones, cuz for some reason the system ones seem to get *eaten* more often.

Whether or not any of that is totally true, I do not know. However, I follow the above in organizing my inventory and though it is EXTREMELY HUGE, I have never lost anything and I only have slowdowns trying to do things that inventory size definitely and obviously impacts (opening the texture window when building, opening a new inventory window).

YMMV

/me does not believe your inventory size has anything to do with how quickly you can access things in there. Once you find the leaf you want, the size of the rest of the tree (in general) doesn't really matter.

There's been talk in the past that the size of your Calling Cards folder has an impact on the speed of TPs. I think it was Desmond (but could well be wrong) that said he tested this and found that cleaning that folder out did indeed speed up TPs. But don't quote me on that... :) I can believe this one since it's sorta related to Friends and the viewer may play games with notifications and stuff (for things like Find On Map) when you TP. There may also be games related to the size of your Landmarks folder but bet it'd be far less than that of Calling Cards.

This actually makes total sense because the viewer/server have to constantly talk to see if your friends/calling-card-people are online or not -- though the more I think about it, I would expect that to affect performance as a whole and not just during TPs. The number of groups you are in also plays a role in TPs sometimes cuz of land access and permissions on land.

The 'top sellers' would refuse to let LL do this.

Top seller favored merchants get that way by selling loads and loads and loads of crap.
- cheap quality clothing for both low and high prices on xstreet mostly (with price having little impact on quality, only perception thereof).

If there was an inventory limit, it would kill their business model.

Likewise of a lot of major inworld merchants.

And that would be an impact LL would feel - limiting inventory size would be limiting SL commerce in the one place they are willing to see it.

I could probably get my inventory down to under 10K if I was able to transfer non-trans clothes and furniture to others. :( Having been raised in a family of IRS employees, it is really hard for me to throw away anything. I still have my tax returns from 1979.

Yeah, but they're in boxes that you never look inside, and if they were to spontaneously self-destruct, you'd probably never know.

Every time I put inventory items in a box, it's as good a write-only memory: I'll never look at it again.

I could happily "file" probably 80% of my Inventory into boxes and never miss it, but I'd never be willing to trash the same items.

One thing I have gotten good about: trashing landmarks. I keep just a few at top level for navigating among parcels where I'm actively working on stuff; all others declined or trashed immediately. They're invariably out of date before I have occasion to use them, so why should they clutter up my Inventory and my Map?

From Jack Linden's office hours about a week or so back...

I really wish we could have secondary inventories or such. I eventually will use those 20 no-transfer sculptie trees I paid 700 L apiece for, but I doubt I will need them with me when I go dancing.

That's been brought up before - a stored inventory that can be accessed but not immediately. Does that make any computer sense? It makes human sense.

It's nothing but a rumour but here are the answeres to your questions:
Is this true? No
What's the point in SL anymore. Exactly as before plus TIDY YOUR ROOM!
What's the point in ... maintain how much we buy? Buy as much as you want/need/can afford plus TIDY YOUR ROOM
Do you know how freaking long ... Weeks and weeks, like those of us that have TIDIED OUR ROOMS
... and how much crap that I need would have to go? None. TIDY YOUR ROOM
What the heck people? Oh, about 27, I'd say. Just after you TIDY YOUR ROOM.

Organise, put things in boxes and stop whining. My inventory is around 4k and I can actually find things and don't moan about inventory loss/inventory won't load/etc

LOL

My accounting alt has nothing in her Inventory save for the basic Library stuff, and she scoots right around the grid while teleporting. I've kept my own Inventory under 6,000 items for 3 years now, and have never lost an item or had super slow teleports. My teleports are noticeably slower than the alt's though. Whether it's the calling cards or the actual number of items, I'm not sure.

There you go. And the Blog thread on this topic has marked with a "1 correct answer available" star, this:

"Just the usual hoax like the warnings about the one person running around the grid crashing sims and stuff... As long as there is no official statement from Linden Lab *coughs* don't bet a cent on such announcements."

On the OpenLife grid, instead of inventory limits they made it so:
If you haven't rezzed an item for 12 months it "Poofs" out of your inventory and is gone. Deleted from the database.

An utterly stupid idea!

I have not heard anything in terms of an inventory limit. I'm assuming it'll never happen, as inventory is generally in the form of an database table, which server wise does not cause too much lag, even for people like myself, and a few friends well over the 100,000 inventory mark... Only down fall to having so much inventory, most of the time the search fails to work as it's still trying to see how much inventory you have. Organizing in folders is a must beyond 50,000 inventory items however.
