From: Cristalle Karami Usually if I send an IM and get ignored, I assume they're having cybersex and I am not their #1 priority at that time, or that with the demise of the flashing IM panel, they don't know that I sent them a message. Ahh, see, I think that's what the "busy" status is for. Getting busy.

Oh, gah, I unintentionally ignore people all the time. I usually have the sound off when I'm on, unless I'm at a concert or some such. So, that IM "ching ching" never gets heard, and the IM itself gets buried on page two of my communication thingee. Or, I'm off scripting and have the page filled with windows. Or, I'm in photoshop. Or, my nose is buried in a build and I didn't see you jumping up and down, madly typing and waving your sign that says "hullo!". Or, I'm in IM, talking to someone who is wondering why I didn't get back to them an hour ago when I logged on It's SL, if I see someone ignoring my sparkling personality when I say hullo to them, I generally assume it isn't my fault, nor do they dislike me. Really, the ego is fragile enough as it is, I needn't add THAT to its list of complaints.

I started out just like in RL chatting to everybody, when I opened my place which was within weeks,I chatted because I do that in my RL place.Oopps did I learn quick,Here now it seem to me people don't want to talk, unless they are drunk or a looney. It might be they are of a different language or shy or just plain rude.Nowadays I speak if I am spoken to but if people are rude, upfront or totally bloody ignorant I will put busy on or tp away, even from my own place. It's a big pity and it does spoil the deal but thats lifers,

One problem I had that inhibited my responses when chatting was a really crummy computer with not enough memory to run SL properly. There were times I was lagged so badly it was even hard to key into the chat box. The letters would freeze and the hard drive would go nuts. It was using a huge amount of virtual memory. Sometimes people would come up to me and ask a question, and I was all fired up to answer, but they would walk away before my avatar started responding. Good thing I got a new computer before the old hard drive wore out completely. Now I can respond to chat more reasonably. Of course, I'm still more accustomed to these forums where you have time to think a little before posting. Chat is still uncomfortable for me because of it's immediacy and because it has to be very brief. Also, I'm very much a recluse in both worlds.

From: Kaimi Kyomoon 1. They were ignoring you on purpose because they're uninteresting jerks. I guess I'm uninteresting then . I'll be more than happy to talk to people when I'm at a social venue, but if I'm busy doing something I'm not dropping everything to talk to everyone random that comes along (most of them are just going to be "ur pretty... wanna go somewhere?" anyway), you'd never get anything done. Most of the time people aren't getting ignored, but they just picked the wrong place to try and start a conversation.

There are, as already stated, many perfectly legitimate reasons why you may not get a response. However, the one that riles me, is when people invade my private house. After bypassing the locked door (which is a good clue that it's not a public area), they procceed to wander about, trampeling my cats, trying all my stuff, while totally ignoring me in chat and im. I know I can just eject and ban, but Invincibot is much more fun. If you are going to step on my cats, I see no reason why I can't set you on fire then launch you into orbit.

Well if you know they are talking to you and you don't respond you ARE ignoring them. But I'll admit that doesn't necessarily make you uninteresting or a jerk. You don't owe it to random strangers to take an interest in them and they shouldn't feel bad if you (a complete stranger to them) prefer to just tend your own business.

From: Madhu Maruti Try not to take it personally. Sometimes people don't speak the same language as you, or are away from the keyboard, or up to their butts in IMs and not even looking at the public chat window, or (as noted above) are not even real people at all. I feel your frustration. I have complained before about people TPing into my place and walking around looking around, trying all the seats and dance balls and object givers, and never once respond to my warm greeting. It drives me batty. But, sadly, there's nothing you can do. If you visit my place, and I am there, I promise I will not ignore you. I visited your place the other night. Nothing but silence. I was completely ignored. OK - I was the only person in the entire sim, so I guess I can't have been ignored, because there was nobody to do the ignoring, but still! I loved it, by the way. I'll swing by again sometime when someone is there for a chat. It looks alike a great place to just hang out and relax. In all seriousness, there are far more interesting people in SL than there are jerks. A lot of time if people are not responding it is because they are AFK, Gimping or Photoshopping, buried in IM hell, or they just don't catch your message. There can be a lot going on at once in SL, and it's tough to keep up with everything. I'm terrible at it.

I show up and all the cool kids disappear. It's like I'm cursed or something. it is because you are cooler than cool and they are so in awe and shy that they run and hide you amaze them and leave them speechless

From: Kaimi Kyomoon I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to everyone I've ever ignored. I never would do it if I knew you were there but when I'm in world I'm usually working. While my av is standing there looking more or less alert I am working in an image editing program, reading and answering e-mail, IMing or focusing on something I'm building which might not be right in front of me. I'm afraid sometimes people speak to me and I just don't realize it. Good call, I too suspect I've ignored many people without even knowing it Sorta like when you ar edeep in thought driving to work and realise that there's no cars around you you're in a different lane and you don't remember how you passed through the last 3 intersections, did I go through a red light. did I indicate, why did I change lanes?

I know a lady that had this happening to her a lot, sometimes she would end up in totally off the beaten path places, 40 miles or so out of the way, with no memory of getting there she went to the dr cuz it happened a lot, come to find out she was having a type of seizure and did not know it

she went to the dr cuz it happened a lot, come to find out she was having a type of seizure and did not know it Wow. That is scary. Thank goodness I always got where I was supposed to be going; just once and a while the trip wasn't very memorable I guess. I think I remembered what I had heard on the radio or what I had been thinking just nothing about the actual drive.

Yeah, I might only loose 15minutes or so, I would hope horns blowing and screeching tyres would alert me if my autopilot script did something dumb I know one way for this to happen for sure is to use a mobile phone while driving, so I never answer the phone unless I am on the wide open road or sparsly populated freeway, too much dumb stuff can happen in suburbia. My phone has this cool feature other mobile users seem to lack called caller ID on missed calls , so I wait til I get home or pullover to call back, and if they have hidden caller on, big deal, they're obviously not a person important to me and they can call back. Then again I'll ignore the phone too if I'm talking to someone else too. GF's seem to dislike this except when it's them I'm talking to ...........

I always said I'd never use a cell phone while I was driving. Then the morning after I got my first one I went to work a bit late and got stuck in a long line of traffic. We were stopping and moving up one car length at a time less that 1mph. So I thought, "well I have a phone now, maybe I should call in and tell them not to worry, I'm just going to be a bit late. It's not like I'm on the freeway." So while I was trying to figure out how to make the call I rear ended the car in front of me. Ooops. Fortunately it didn't hurt the huge bumper I ran into. But for the next ten years, until we got rid of it, that car had a hole in it's apparently fiber glass bumper and people in parking lots were always offered to fix it for good prices. I have almost never used the cell phone while driving since.

From: Maureen Boccaccio Here's the scenario that I find odd. I enter an almost completely empty boutique, and there is one lonely soul there, clearly shopping, moving about the store, clicking on items.. I say hello, and after a suitably long delay...get no response. Ah well. I just do my shopping and move on...
I have been guilty of being so intent on camming around the various products that I do not always notice that someone has entered and said something until a few minutes later. If I notice it before the person leaves, then I always say Hi and apologize for missing their chat, but sometimes they are already gone.

From: EREBUS Beck .... in general, I don't talk to people I don't already know. I always found this statement a bit odd - how do you ever 'already know them' if you do not talk to them at some point?
