Have *any* Canadians been able to age-verify?

We Canadians on the SL Universe forums have been chatting amongst ourselves, and we find that not a single Canadian has been able to age-verify using SIN or drivers licence.

Has ANYBODY out there who is a Canadian made it through the process and gotten verified??

Sorry, once I was asked my SIN (don't have DL or passport,) I just decided not to go through with it. Are some of you really giving out your SIN?

We only represent less then 3% in SL, so I'm thinking not too many people will answer your post. lol

I'm Canadian and I am verified. I verified during the pre reg for Concierge Clients though so I'm not sure if that made a difference.

Don't Give Out Your SIN!
12-06-2007 10:37
Anybody who gives out their SIN is crazy in my opinion. While it is not illegal for SL to ask for a SIN, it is still strongly frowned upon, and you are not required to provide it. Your SIN is a sort of key that links to all the information the federal government has on you, census records, taxes, etc.

Also note that, according to Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act. businesses must supply you with a product or a service even if you refuse consent for the collection, use or disclosure of your personal information unless that information is essential to the transaction.

They ask for the last 4 digits of the SIN.

No they don't, they ask for the last four digits of the American SSN (Social Insurance Number).

Driver's Licence Bureau does NOT verify age to third parties, including Integrity.
12-06-2007 10:54
This just keeps getting better and better.

I just got off the phone with my provincial driver's licensing bureau. I explained the circumstances, and asked if it were legal for SL to ask for a driver's licence number.

The woman told me that the bureau does not give out ANY information to ANY third party, without the express consent of the driver.

In other words, Integrity WON'T HAVE ANY MEANS to verify my province's driver licence numbers, or determine the driver's age from them.

Dear God what a mess this age-verification system is.

Interesting. The driver's license was about the only way I was willing to age verify.

Oh well. Will just have to make my own fun. :)

Really? When I tried, it asked US citizens their last 4 numbers, but when I checked the option Canada, it asked for "your Social Ins Number" - didn't mention anything about your last 4 digits... There are only 9 digits, so I would think that having your birth date and part of your SIN + other info, it would be relatively easy to get the remaining digits... but I AM kind of paranoid when it comes to my personal information. :)

Edit: WOW, I must be the slowest typer in Canada, LOL

We'll trade. You can give them my SSN last four, I'll give them your SIN last four. And what an interesting acronym you guys have come up with. ;)

I'm in the UK - age verification has failed on my passport so far.
The error says I may have moved recently - NO
The error says my country may use more than one identification method - well, no not really. we don't have ID cards - Not sure if Social Insurance means the same as our National Insurance, and we aren't obliged to drive in the Uk, so I don't have a Driving Licence.
It's so utterly typical of LL to roll out something that's broken from day one!

Useless!

Just got off the phone with Louise at the 1-800 number for Social Insurance Number (SIN) questions. She says:

- that SL asking for SIN for age verification purposes was "not acceptable"; and

- under Canada's privacy act, the federal government is forbidden to provide ANY information, including age, to ANY third party.

So, like my drivers licence, Integrity CANNOT verify my age , OR ANYONE'S AGE, based on my SIN.

Don't take my word for it, find out yourself, The number is 1-800-206-7218, select option 3 for Social Insurance Number information.

My next call is to Passport Canada's 1-800 number.

Instead of Age Verification, maybe they should have an Intelligence Verification System... or maybe a Trivia questionnaire. Seems it would be more simple to implement. At the very least, it would surely be more fun. If you passed, it wouldn't be so important how old you were, you would be deemed mature enough not to take SL so seriously and be able to use the "Quit" button if you were ever remotely scared or scandalized... :D

I was able to verify many months ago when the beta was limited to Concierge customers. I verified with my drivers license as I do not feel comfortable providing my SIN number to anybody, let alone these 'integrity' folks.

I checked with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation's website and did some searching around and found that they didn't really have a problem with people using your DL number for proof of ID, they will not themselves divulge any RL information based on your DL number, in other words they will not 'verify' your age or anything else. I will point out that Ontario DL numbers do have the date of birth built into the number itself.. at least those of mine and my immediate family do. The last 6 digits of the DL number is the birth date.

Anyhow, answering the OP's question, Yes I'm Canadian, living in Ontario, and I verified with an Ontario drivers licence, back in the summer.

I live in Manitoba, and my driver's licence does NOT have the birth date embedded within it. In other words, they CANNOT VERIFY MY AGE based on the driver's licence number.

OK I just off the phone from Passport Canada. The man I spoke to made it clear that Passport Canada does NOT verify ANY information, including age, from a passport number, and that it is probably illegal for SL to ask for a passport number to be used in this fashion.

In other words, Integrity cannot use a Canadian passport number to verify age!!

Integrity CANNOT VERIFY YOUR AGE using your SIN or your passport number, and in fact, it is probably iullegal for them to do so under Canada's privacy act.

Integrity CANNOT VERIFY YOUR AGE using a Manitoba driver's licence.

In short, THERE IS NO CANADIAN IDENTIFICATION NUMBER that allows SL/Integrity to verify your age.

As of yet, there is no universal way to verify someone's age via the internet. I suggest no one comply with this until more is known - after all this is Beta - don't be guinea pigs while using your personal information...

Heh, a comedy of errors. I wonder if a freaking credit check would provide an age? Anyway, no SIN for them.

Hi I am a Canadian and have been informed (for reasons other than SL) that I am NOT allowed to divulge Canadian Passport, Canadian Citizenship Card information, Social Insurance Number (RCMP recently spoke to this on CBC) or driver license information to ANYONE other than a Canadian government agency.
Besides, I dont want to jeopardize my country's security (however small the risk) for a game.

Do NOT give out your SIN number!
Recently RCMP were showing that it is major cause of identity fraud/theft and security breach. Besides it is in a very real sense the property of the Government of Canada and we have a SIN number as a privilege NOT as a right. Keep that number safe.

Based on my calling the public 1-800 numbers for the various government services:

This is important enough to warn people about.

Integrity CANNOT VERIFY YOUR AGE using your SIN or your passport number, and in fact, it is probably illegal for them to do so under Canada's privacy act.

Check for yourself if you don't believe me:

SIN: 1-800-206-7218 (Option 3 for SIN)
Passport Canada: 1-800-567-6868

Integrity CANNOT VERIFY YOUR AGE using a Manitoba driver's licence (although they would be able to using an Ontario driver's licence number alone, apparently your birth date is embedded within your number).

In short, for most Canadians THERE IS NO CANADIAN IDENTIFICATION NUMBER that allows SL/Integrity to verify your age. NOT ONE.

If SL/Integrity is asking for those numbers then it's NOT for age verification purposes!!
