I think I'll put "morally reprehensible" into my profile. I like that.
Heh.. I'd wear it as a group tag... I've done worse. (^_^)y

It's got nothing to do with my identity or whether I'm role-playing or not. It's simply that voice is not well suited for many-to-many conversations. It tends to break up into multiple 1-1 conversations (where the cocktail party effect comes in) or it turns into a series of 1-many presentations.
--------------

I agree. I *like* scanning up and down the text stream during a large-group discussion. I think this method works really well. It's amazing how often people say it's confusing, despite the fact that voice is harder to keep track of in a large group. I like your description of the problem - I've not seen it explained so clearly.

This is the "supports multiple conversation threads" dimension at the bottom of the diagram in http://virtualgreg.spill-label.org/2008/05/30/communicating-by-voice-in-second-life/#more-13 . I put 'immersionists' and 'augmentationists' on the 'text' side of this dimension, suggesting that people should like this aspect of text regardless of their attitude to pseudonymity - as you point out.

Of course this is just one way in which voice and text differ. Voice has advantages too (some of which depend on your attitude to pseudonymity) and these may outweigh the disadvantages in some situations.

I leave voice on but find that in most of the places I hang, no one uses it. Every so often I go out with a group of friends and voice comes in handy. Like others have said, it's also useful for giving instructions and stuff. I guess you can put me on the don't care either way side. There are also things I can type in IM I'd prefer my RL roomie not hear. :)

You know, for every person who complains about and refuses to use voice ... you will get a person like me for whom Voice is easier than text.

My own reason? I use a shared computer and as such do not fiddle with the resolution settings and such. Text on the screen is, at best, very fuzzy and very cloudy. sure, I can read it, but with great difficulty. I generally can be found with my nose quite close to the screen to read the text.

When voice was integrated, I was ecstatic. finally! A way for me to communicate that does not require painful eye strain!

Now, I still 'talk' in text for those who do not use Voice ... but I prefer Voice.

And at that point, everyone who does like and use Voice who is near you will chatter away at you on Voice, and wonder why you're so rude and ignoring their witty remarks.

I've been using voice for quite a while now and I don't agree with your observation. When speaking I make sure people can hear me because I am aware of the fact that it is always possible that either someone's headset is broken or my voice setup is. When someone speaks and no reaction is following most people would assume a technical problem and ask in chat if they can be heard. If not, continue typing. No big deal.

There's a place I used to visit all the time before voice. After voice...I have almost no desire to go there as often anymore. I don't want to have to enable voice just to speak to you. Volumes are bad, static is bad, and sounds, yeah.
I see voice used too much, I'd like to be in OP position of seeing it nowhere. o_o

Last night I was having a chat with a voice using friend and a noobie joined in. My guess is that about 2 or 3 minutes in, they stopped paying attention to my typing. I figured I was already out of the conversation so I TPed away. About a half hour later I got an apologetic IM from her saying she completely forgot I was there and didn't notice I left. I couldn't respond with much more than "S'okay, don't worry. (^_^)" (>_<;)

It's times like that which make me half tempted to get on the mic myself... But not. (>_<;)

I use voice whenever possible. I usually don't mind whether or not the other person types or talks as long as I can avoid having to type :)
I had not considered that option. I usually do not use voice, mainly because it is distracting to others in the house (my office is a dual desk setup and often my husband is using his computer also). However, I recently met someone who is very dyslexic and prefers to not type because their spelling is not very good - though they do not mind working on the reading of my typing as long as I don't mind them being a bit slow with the reading. I had not really thought about the fact that I can enable voice for listening and just always respond with typing.

Voice is just another tool to be used or not as you see fit. Nothing more, nothing less.

With voice users I'm tempted to put "morally invisible".

Unfortunately some of the people using it apparently are tools.

This is where I want to see good real-time voice TRANSCRIPTION coming in. When I got a Pocket PC in 2000 it included a version of Dragon's voice product, and I was hopeful that I'd finally got a voice transcriber... but no, all it could do was accept commands, inaccurately. Since then voice *command* features have become common in even inexpensive handhelds, and I always have to turn them off... if you're not from New York, Los Angeles, or London it seems like they don't want to listen.

Voice transcription? Still science fiction.

My experience has been that *some* of the people using it are not even as useful as most of the tools that I have.

I've had that happen. My response was a lot harsher.

"Well, if you want to talk to me again, let me know when you're ready to pay attention to local chat, because I will not use voice with you."

Yeah, I was in a pissy mood. Now that I have Immy's awesome "Pay attention to local chat" gesture, I'm going to be using it. A lot.
