From: Monalisa Robbiani ...when explaining something to a newbie it is faster and easier to speak. Meetings with friends and group members are more efficient when most people are talking instead of typing. Another advantage: You can build while talking to other builders at the same time. Typing and building don't go well together. Those are perfect reasons for voice. However, I never use it. I have the problem of other house members being disturbed by my loud booming sounds. And I don't run across people using it at all, other than club DJs.

I used to be very anti-voice.
"Creepy," I thought. "Why on earth would you want to shatter the illusion?"
Then I met a delightful group of people who voice. They were patient with me (and thankful that I'm a speedy typist), but I got the impression that if I heard them all on voice, things would get even more entertaining.
They did.
Now I can hear it when people growl playfully, laugh like a loon, or sniffle over some sappy song on the stream. It's added a whole new dimension to my SL experience; I'm extremely glad I took the chance and plugged in my headset.
Of course, voice isn't all sunshine and roses. Sometimes you're going to hear things you wish you hadn't, either through someone else's rudeness or forgetfulness. But with close friends, voice is a wonderful tool for communication (and can also save you a ton on phone bills!).

From: Monalisa Robbiani Second, around a fifth of all female avatars are in fact guys who of course refuse to voice for obvious reasons.
And you get this number from where? Part of the problem are the terms "Pro Voice and Anti Voice" It makes a philosophical debate over what is simply a personal preference. Whether to use THE OPTION that is voice is not about confidence. It is just a choice. That's all. Some will choose to use it, some won't. That's it. Neither one is more right than the other. If the person you are interacting with is of the opposite mind, then move on. There are plenty of people out there, even if you do factor in the 1, 433,577 bots, and 3,399,601 alts. *I can make up statistics , too* I do agree on not letting someone else dictate how you use SL to you. decide for yourself whether to use this option, just like all the others. Don't let anyone else pressure you. And whatever choice you make, you don't have to explain or justify it to anyone else.

From: Jig Chippewa Do men like voice more than women? Do men like webcams more than women? Apart from those women who may be men (and good luck to them, I say; teh more women we have on our side teh better), I think women are less inclined to make a breach of that private space that sl offers in this world of silence and relative anonymity. It's an age-old argument which won't be solved here BUT I can "think" voice rather than hear a squeaky gnome when I see a hulk. It's that simple. No, I wont risk a breach of the security wall SL kindly provides for me with silence and restricted media input/output. I do not own a webcam and I do not particularly like voice, though I have, on very rare occasion, used voice. So that's one man. You need a poll, though, I suppose.

In my own experience, the majority of people I hear on voice are women. But, it may be simply because of the groups I spend time with. Still... Voice is still often a jarring experience for me. I spent a good hour on voice with one friend yesterday when she needed a listening ear for some stuff going on. After I got over the initial discomfort of hearing her speak, we had a pretty good conversation. (^_^)
I, on the other had, had no opportunity to turn on my mic. Not only because of my own voice issue, but, I have family at home and I'm constantly being called by name to do something... That's one major thing I don't want broadcast over the internet. (=_=)
Keeping my mic off lets Immy be Immy. (^_^)y

From: Brenda Connolly And you get this number from where? Various polls about SL. When counting the genderbending people I know about I come to the conclusion that these numbers are probably even a conservative guess.

voice is a preference on SL. You may use it, or not. My choice is not to use it, if others like it, fine but dont expect to 'enlighten' me. As long as it remains a choice we all can make our own choices.

I find that a lot of people who don't like voice are shy and lack confidence. I wouldn't say this is the case for everyone, but I think it's a pretty common reason.

Even more of a reason not to pressure them into using it. *Not saying you are* Those people especially, come to SL to help escape their RL burdens, or to help work through them. Thye don't need to be harassed and belittled by small minded asshats who probably are lacking in self confidence themselves. And I wish people would stop spouting unsubstantiated statistics on who may women are men. You don't know. No one knows for sure. Not even LL. All it does is give those asshats more ammunition. People really need to mind their own frigging business. *Again, I'm not picking on Scott here. No moe coffe for me today.

Some PC's simply can't handle it. I myself wasn't able to run it because of my sound card set up.. I didn't have a regular mic jack or line in on my PC.. I have a Mia Midi sound card and it made things difficult. Now that I can start voice it will crash after about 20 min. I'm not going to relog to get voice back.. lol Yea I'm lazy like that.. Besides I am used to typing and normally have my music cranked up or TV... It's simply choice.

Personally I hate voice. I use it. I reply in text. But I couldn't reply by voice even if I wanted to. Due to me being mute.

From: Monalisa Robbiani Over the past months I changed my opinion completely and went from a strong anti-voice standpoint to a very positive one. I'm almost 50, I've tried a bunch of voice and text chat systems over the decades (I met my wife online back before there was an Internet by that name, when it was all dialup and talker lines), I'm pretty sure that going to voice on SL is not going to be a different experience.

From: Brenda Connolly And you get this number from where? 85% of all statistics are made up on the spot. From: someone Part of the problem are the terms "Pro Voice and Anti Voice" It makes a philosophical debate over what is simply a personal preference. VWR-1317 is there because Linden Labs forces you to turn voice on to see if other people have turned voice on. Which is just plain obnoxious. VWR-1317 is about making it a fair choice.

LL makes EVERYTHING hard that may be a personal preference. From wanting privacy inworld, to being online anonymously, it seems the ideas that people may want different things seems to have been lost on them.

A good use of voice
11-05-2008 10:41
I don't use voice most of the time myself, but the plays that the SL Shakespeare Company performs at the Globe are in voice, and they are wonderful. The audience is reminded several times to turn voice ON and turn their microphones OFF so that they don't make noise during the performance. I zoom my camera in on the stage, I hear the actors deliver their lines, and it is as close as someone like me, who lives out in the wilds of the country, can get to live theater.
