For the last days I jumped randomly around the grid looking out for the famous white dot indicating voice usage. Among hundreds of avatars I saw not one who was using voice.
Then I logged on using a cute girl alt and activated voice on my own system. Of course, I got hit upon a couple of times, but never with voice.
Now I know that the Lindens praise voice as the best thing since sliced bread in the Corporate market, but I wonder ... is there any place where you have seen voice used?

All the time- I voice often when ever i remember to wear my 'phones. I frequent Club Shiraz and voice is very common there for one thing. Some people liek it some dont- it helps me immensely 'cause I speak a hell of a lot better than I type

When you were looking for voice dots, did you have voice on? Do the dots show if you don't?
I don't use it, but I have it "on" and I hear it from time to time. Most major retail sales I've attended recently had at least 2 people using voice in the crowd during the time I was there. I once had someone talk to me in my store using voice (I typed). Sadly, I've also seen it used in a crowded location and once when I was sightseeing to blare music and annoying noises through the voice mic.
No way to know how many people us it in private voice calls.
I've started turning my voice volume way down bc/ I don't really like to hear it. Also, I cam around a lot, and hear any voices near the camera, which may be part of why I notice voice in the crowd at large events. I stand and cam, and my camera goes in range of their chat.

I usually have it on (but dun use it), while out an about. The only places I really see it in use are at the Welcome Areas -- an usually to harass and belittle others or say racist/sexist stuff.

You can link voice to your avatar position as well.

From: Nimue Jewell When you were looking for voice dots, did you have voice on? Do the dots show if you don't? No, they bleeding well don't, and there's no good reason for it since the sim knows who's doing voice so it can fire voice gestures. http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1317

The wildest game I've seen played with voice chat is when someone records "choice phrases" from someone, uploads the WAVs, and plays them back while the person is still there. If people aren't paying enough attention, it can sound like the speaker is saying what's repeated. And... They don't get the "green text" effect that mimic tools have. (>_< So.. Advice.. Don't voice drunk, sarcasm is your enemy, and watch what you say around welcome area crowds. (^_^)y

I don't do voice, and keep it turned off. Main reason? I hate the sound of bodily noises. The last couple of people I listened to on voice (I was text chatting), not only were hacking their lungs out at me, but making some other disgusting sounds as well.
I have noticed the tendency of people on voice to completely ignore local chat, which can be aggravating, so I no longer try to talk to people who are voicing around me. They won't see what I type anyway.

They won't see what I type anyway. True that. When helping people in welcome areas, I find I can be standing in front of the avatar, typing one-word-per-line chatspam, offering help the whole time... Only to get the response "Why won't anyone talk to me?" ... Usually with a mic turned up so high that half sound is redlined! (>_< I made a sound gesture that I'll resort to sometimes... It says, "Please pay attention to the typed chat. People are trying to help you there." in a pretty pleasant voice. There are times when it actually works. (^_^)y

Don't voice. Voice is a ruffian's game; they can't type or write.

From: Solar Legion You can link voice to your avatar position as well. Thanks. Yet another setting I haven't tweaked. I'll go have a look. Funny that this just came up. I TP'd to some land I just purchased and a couple of neighbors were there chatting in voice. They texted a hello, and I told them I had the dot, but didn't have things set up to use voice. We had a nice little text/voice combo chat, and all went well.

I'll even trade you for a "Don't stick that finger in your ear. You don't know where that finger's been." gesture that I made all by my lonesome.

Geez, such hate toward voice in SL. Please keep in mind that there *are* people out there that do use push-to-talk, considerately wear headphones and do sometimes have useful and fun things to talk about. You just have to find them.

Hey, you should know this... the client is responsible for playing the gestures, not the sim. You read the gesture and send chat, sound, and animation messages. People pleaded to keep voice from being a drag on the sim and that's what we got :/ Mm, I use voice, but it really does seem hard to find people using it when exploring. I think it's great to feel more connected with the people around you though.

I use voice whenever possible. I usually don't mind whether or not the other person types or talks as long as I can avoid having to type Voice is a *great* benefit when talking someone through something - sooooooo much easier and quicker than typing.

I personally dont talk much because i stop doin everything else lol, I sometimes have it on to listen to others, that can be funny, but most the time its some mom screaming at the kids with the mic on, someone having their music on very loud in their rl house, ooorrr the sex talk, sorry dont need to hear others moaning and groaning. lol One thing I do think is neat though is all the differnt accents that is cool to hear. But lately im old school and just keep it off.

I have it on all the time. I hear it every now & then. The dumbest thing I've encountered are people who wont use SL Voice but will use Skype instead. Uh, yea. Same thing!!!! Go figure!!! Odds of me having a Headset & mic hooked up to use voice? Not often. I still love hearing other languages being spoken. SO NEAT!!!

Tried it earlier this year. Turned it off, and gave the microphone back to the friend I borrowed it from. Haven't urned it on since. I can do without it.

This morning, or maybe it was last night, at Help Island Public there was a guy giving a musical performance using voice, playing guitar and singing. The quality of playing and singing was pleasing enough.
I don't know if this was appropriate or not. People of normal courtesy level would not want to talk during such a performance, plus it would be hard to have a conversation with the music going on.
For the typical listener, this was likely much more entertaining than the normal insults, cussing, talking about having sex with animals, etc. that makes up most of the voice chat I've heard in public places.
