For those of you that seldom leave the RA forum: /348/81/355691/1.htmlFrom: Lil Linden Hi all, Due to a content-threatening bug, we're going to be doing a full grid deploy tomorrow. My goal is to hit the majority before noon. Whatever remains will be continued after 5pm. Since it's going to be a very quick deploy, there won't be any distinction between the even & odd sims. They're all going! * 2009-12-15 @ 5:30am until 12:00pm - Start 100% sim roll * 2009-12-15 @ 5:00pm until complete - Finish 100% sim roll The release notes have been updated, though they're intentionally vague due to the security concern: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_Beta_Server/1.34

Thanks for the info. But it's horrible. After every rolling restart the grid suffers instability and lag is bad. Every week now we have rolling restarts. Only 2 of 7 days are workable nowadays.

Wow, this must be a big freaking deal for LL to react so forcefully.

Honestly...

I'd rather have (somewhat) frequent restarts than have crazy bugs out in the wild... and yes, at the expense of lag from everything catching back up again.
Granted, i don't have any type of business that suffers from it... but even still. i can't see how not having the updates would be better for anyone.

I agree. Everyone bitches about the "bugs" but, when they roll out a new server version, everyone bitches even more. I remember when they rolled out a new server version every Wednesday. This was before the rolling restarts, which meant the entire grid was down for the roll-out - this often meant hours, and more than once, days when the grid was down. Were there problems? Sure. But at least they were trying to make things better and/or more stable.

And I have to agree, Nuclear... i don't know if i've ever seen such a forceful push of a rolling restart before. I have to imagine if we knew what it was about, we'd all (well, content creators mostly, but still...) be saying.. "oh.. OH... ok, yes... please, go ahead roll on to your hearts content. Thank you."

But boy was it fun on the forums while everyone waited for the grid to come back up. But I could have sworn those updates/grades were on Tuesday........but this is the second time someone mentioned Wednesday. On the topic.........I can remember maybe two times (besides this time) where LL rushed an emergency update out. And on both those occassions they did not devulge the reason until after the fact.......they both were security bugs (or exploits). I think if you really put your mind to it you can figure out why LL won't say what the specifics are. Would you tell everyone you left your door unlocked, your dog was at the kennel, and your jewelry was on the night stand in your bedroom? Think about it.

The phrase "content-threatening bug" kinda sends a chill down the spine, no?

The only reason that I know for a fact that is was Wednesday is that at that time I worked the overnight shift on Tuesday and used to look forward to SL when I got home in the morning - often to be disappointed with prolonged downtime

It was definitely Wednesdays.
A "content-threatening bug" doesn't necessarily mean an open door for any thieves who find it. If it is, it's not good even using that phrase. It could be more like a bug where content disappears irretrievably in certain circumstances.

My imagination: LL do tend to react quickly when a bug like I described appears, even though it would only raise its head in some uncommon circumstances. Of course, it could be what was first thought - an open door to steal content - and using the phrase "content-threatening bug" was unwise, although that would be more of an exploit than a bug. My money is on a content-chewing bug

The worst bit was when the projected reopening time came round and they still hadn't finished. I still get flashbacks. I don't suppose anyone saved the pic of the Grid Monkeys that LL put up on the home page: "The Grid is down while we bang on things".

I answered my own question - a bit blurry, but here it is: http://www.jongslog.nl/images/slstoring.jpgThere's a clearer one here: http://www.blogcdn.com/www.secondlifeinsider.com/media/2007/05/bang_on_things.jpgYou're living in the past, Francesca. Quit living in the past!

I noticed that there was a new post in the 'Server Deploys' area so I actually read it before coming here. The last post in that thread (#26 @ 3:56 AM PST) suggests that the content threat is not a copy but deletion threat. It seems that the bug allows people to see and manipulate other people's inventory.

My money is on a content-chewing bug I fear you would lose the bet, Phil; From: Lil Linden This is certainly not minor! There is a security bug that threatens content theft and it needs to be patched immediately. The specifics of said bug are not disclosed as a matter of policy.

Yes, it was on Wednesdays, in the hopes that the grid would be stable enough for the weekends. Rarely did that happen, however. Usually by Friday night, we had full grid crashes either due to glitches in the server system or griefers being griefers. I remember that when it was possible, we'd all pile onto the beta grid, have trouble rezzing (plenty of Ruths for everyone!), and the it crash too. Then we'd all wind up in the forums complaining about the update

From: Innula Zenovka I fear you would lose the bet, Phil; In spite of what Rafe posted, it seems that I would have lost the bet, in which case, it was unwise for LL to use the phrase "content threatening bug" - imo. ETA: I've now read the whole Linden thread. Maybe the deleting of other people's inventory also includes moving items in other people's inventory to your own. That would fit all the posts - stealing content and deleting other people's inventories. If that's the case, then the full perm inventories of all creators are currently at risk of being stolen.
